NFL News: Browns discover ACL tear for WR Charles Johnson

Browns QB Brian Hoyer tore his ACL against the Buffalo Bills in week five. The team placed him on the IR last week and signed WR Charles Johnson off the Green Bay practice squad to take his roster spot.

Today Scott Petrak reported that the Browns discovered that Johnson also has a torn ACL.

The Browns must keep Johnson on the 53 man roster for at least three weeks, so they will not be able to replace him before the Green Bay game on Sunday. (League rules state that signing a player from another team’s practice squad must keep that player for at least three weeks.)

so correct me if I’m wrong, but we signed this guy, gave him a physical, then discovered his ACL tear? Sucks for the guy, but it seems ridiculous we can’t release him or something…

I’m sure I’m missing something so please let me know.

Agreed, aren’t these signings always “pending team physical”?

  • RGB

Based on his physical attributes, scouting report, and trade value we may be seeing him instead of Little next season.

    Bannermetrics.

Too coincidental that he came from Green Bay. Maybe it was one of those Belichek scouting moves.

They are not allowed to give a physical when signing a player off the practice squad from another team. So basically they sign the player then give him the physical. Now after signing a player off another teams PS you have to keep him on active roster for 3 weeks. Seems crazy but that’s the NFL rules I believe.

LOL No wonder they have wallowed in Rickety Rick land

What was their first clue? The guy walks in with a limp?

  • Natedawg86

David Nelson is playing for the Jets. Why did we release him? I forget

As normal free agents, yes. But I think once a player gets to a PS…their status changes a bit.

Sly move, Charles Johnson. You win this round.

    LeCharles Bentley’d

Seems like a dumb rule to me, but thanks for the explanation!

The good news is, he still has at least some knowledge of what the Packers were doing in practice, so hopefully he passed that knowledge along to the coaching staff to help aid in their preparation

  • WFNY_DP

I think it’s to prevent teams signing guys off of other teams’ practice squads to try to harvest systemic knowledge from them, only to cut them after the week is over. Just my hunch.
