NFL News: Browns claim RB/KR Whittaker, waive Hardesty and Cooper

The Browns today claimed RB/KR claimed Fozzy Whittaker off waivers from San Diego. In addition, the team waived wide receiver Josh Cooper and running back Montario Hardesty, who was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 27.

Whittaker is a 5-10, 202-pound running back in his first NFL season out of Texas. He spent the final two weeks of the 2012 season on Arizona’s practice squad before being acquired by the Chargers via waivers on March 12, 2013. Whittaker appeared in three games this season and returned six kickoffs for 156 yards (26.0 avg.) with a long of 42 yards.

The release of Hardesty is not a surprise, but Cooper’s release was. The Browns had been juggling WR Tori Gurley all season between the regular roster and the practice squad. Cooper could still be signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

I have a feeling that Weeden won’t be too far behind in being moved with the Cooper release. Apparently Tennessee is looking for a QB with Locker hurt; then again there’s Jacksonville and Oakland with Pryor hurt.

My first thought was similar: Cooper is the canary in the coalmine of Weeden’s career in Cleveland. He’s only here because of Weeden.

My second thought on these moves: so how is Greg Little going to contribute now that they’ve signed a real return man?

    wacka wacka

  • Robbie S

At least I won’t be on the brink of a heart attack every time Benjamin is back for a return now.

  • RGB

    I found his roster picture.

  • Vindictive_Pat

    Receivers pffffff who needs ’em

  • JNeids

    Now that’s funny.

  • Garry_Owen

Does the FO know that they don’t have to waive TWO players just because this guy is both a RB and KR?

    Durrrrr.

  • RGB

    Bannermetrics.

WR and RB will be an issue all season. Obviously the RB problems are all their own fault. McGahee had a few decent runs but hasn’t done much. Rainey has done nothing but lose us yards…

  • MallaLubba

I think the title of “real return man” is still up for debate.

  • Hamfist

Good point on Little. I thought he was looking pretty good in that role.

Cundif is next that is why they signed Lanning (K/P)

Has the “Hurt Locker” pun been made a thousand times on the Internet already?

  • The_Real_Shamrock

I don’t think Jacksonville wants a QB well until the draft!

  • Jeremy Humbert

Give McGahee a chance. This offense seems to only need a guy to run 15 times and would like a 4 yard average. That may be all McGahee once he gets in stride. Or maybe not… either way we will have a new prospect a comin next off season, whether it be via the draft or FA.

  • Big Z

I’m amazed that Hardesty hung around as long as he did.

  • Sam

Maybe because Hardesty wasn’t on the active roster??

  • Sam

I was really hoping they would give Michael Turner a chance instead of McGahee. Turner came from a similar system where, like you said, 15 rushes with a 4 yard average is necessary.

  • Garry_Owen

    Yes. I was just joking.
