“It seems like we say this every week, but this next week is going to be a big one for the Tribe (and with 32 games left on the schedule, we may need to repeat that phrase a few more times). The Indians hit the road for three-game series with Atlanta and then Detroit, before coming back home to take on Baltimore, one of the teams the Tribe is competing against for the Wild Card.
It’s a big if, but if the Indians can keep pitching the way they have, and keep getting the right hit at the right time, they may actually have a chance to make it out of this nine-game stretch in good shape. And after watching the ups and downs of this team all season, we are pretty much prepared for anything out of this team.” [Red Right 88]

Oh, Oakland. “Following a productive Friday night against the Bears, there has been some clamoring amongst Oakland Raiders fans to start Terrelle Pryor over Matt Flynn, with the common reprise of “why not?”
Head coach Dennis Allen admitted that the team would have to consider giving Pryor a long look. But the Raiders are now giving Pryor first-team reps in practice and will start him in the preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks with once-presumed starter Matt Flynn suffering from a bit of arm fatigue.” [Edholm/Shutdown Corner]

“There’s no real way to measure the overall affect a manager has on a baseball team. It’s pretty clear that managers look a heck of a lot better when they are managing better players. But everyone in and around the club this season agrees that Terry Francona is going a pretty good job with the Indians this year. Scott Miller of CBS Sports wrote an article on the impact Tito is having on the club, talking to everyone from Francona himself to Sandy Alomar Jr. and several of the players. Way back in March when I talked to Indians president Mark Shapiro, he talked about finding “levers” that affect more than one piece of the ballclub. There’s little doubt that Francona has been a lever that has positively impacted the team this year, even though there’s no way to assign a specific win total to the hiring of Francona over Manny Acta. I don’t think Acta was a terrible manager, and Francona has clearly had better players than Acta did at his disposal, but I do believe that Francona has done a very nice job with the team this season.” [Ciammaichella/The DiaTribe]

Not a lot of help from ‘the official’ jersey buying guide for the Tribe. “Cleveland Indians: I’m eschewing the format here because there isn’t a definitive choice. I can see arguments for Jason Kipnis, Carlos Santana, or, should you want to maximize the number of letters you get for your money, Justin Masterson. Of course, his arm could always go off like a firecracker. Bob Feller is the greatest player in franchise history, so you could go that way, or, if you’re an organizational guy, how about Terry Francona? He’ll likely be around for a while. I don’t think there is a wrong answer.” [Kory/Sports on Earth]

Remember how a bunch of Browns fans thought that Matt Flynn was some sort of answer to our quarterback woes over the past years? I wonder what they’re thinking now…
Fortunately, I was never sold on the guy…so I don’t feel the need to eat crow on him. I was (however) a big Colt McCoy supporter for a while there. So, there is that (I guess.) LOL
Unfortunately, there never is a right answer to the Browns’ quarterback problems.
I was a proponent of signing Flynn. But, even then, I admitted it was a gamble and it was more to do with my displeasure with Colt McCoy, giving up 3 1st round picks (+ more) for RGIII (which looks like a mistake by me if he stays healthy), and the other QB options in the draft (Tannehill, Weeden — Russell Wilson wasn’t really considered a high pick).
Based on what we have seen, he would have likely flamed out, taken his $10mil and we’d have drafted another QB. Honestly, I’m happy how it played out drafting Weeden because last year’s QB class ended up being absolutely terrible. Now, if Weeden is bad again, then we can take a QB in what should be a deeper (and better) class.
on the Indians jersey, if I was buying one this offseason, then I think I might just go with a Lindor. get that thing a year early (and hope he doesn’t change his number). be fun at least 🙂
I thought the right answer was always the backup QB? Ok, unless the backup QB is Jason Campbell.
Just wait…
You could always get Lindor #6
