August 28, 2013Braves 3 Indians 2: The little things cost the Tribe big time
August 29, 2013While We’re Waiting is the daily morning link roundup that WFNY has been serving up for breakfast for the last several years. We hope you enjoy the following recent collection of yummy and nutritious Cleveland sports-related articles. Anything else to add? Email us at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.
“With the subject of low hits becoming a common theme in the 2013 NFL season — and the real games haven’t even started yet — it makes sense to get the views of players regarding an important aspect of player safety that may not be addressed until March 2014.
On Wednesday’s PFT Live, Panthers middle linebacker Luke Kuechly was asked about his views on the situation. Among other things, he said he’d gladly trade the ability to tackle offensive players low for a ban on cut blocks.” [Florio/PFT]

“Who was the best defensive player in football last year? You probably just said J.J. Watt’s name, as did I. Who was the second-best defensive player in football last year? That response was probably a little more cacophonous. OK. Who was the best pass rusher in football? Chances are, you said Aldon Smith or Von Miller, who joined Watt as the league’s top three sack producers a year ago. Those three young superstars have two things in common: They’ll be 24 this season and they’re part of what’s shaping up to be the greatest defensive class in modern NFL history, the group from the 2011 NFL draft.” [Barnwell/Grantland]

Anthony Bennett apparently isn’t that big into video games of himself. Video. “For the fourth year in a row, Panini Trading Cards catered to a batch of NBA Rookies for their photoshoot in Tarrytown, New York. Many notable names were in the building including the number one pick of the 2013 NBA Draft, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anthony Bennett.” [Rise 24]

“MAC programs still make only about $100,000 annually from the league’s TV deal — barely enough to stay afloat, let alone compete in today’s football arms race. So they supplement their income by hitting the road and playing paycheck games.
Eight MAC teams play BCS conference opponents this weekend, all on the road. Buffalo is making $1 million to play at No. 2 Ohio State. Toledo is getting $800,000 to play at No. 10 Florida. Ohio is making $500,000 to play at No. 9 Louisville. It’s more than a trend.” [Jackson/FSO]

“The longest tenured draft picks are Paulo Espino, Josh Tomlin and Vinnie Pestano, all from 2006. There is only one 2007 draftee left, Bo Greenwell and I expect he will be released this offseason. The oldest amateur free agent is Frank Herrmann from 2005 and then a trio from 2007, Danny Salazar, Jose Flores and Francisco Jimenez.” [Let’s Go Tribe]

we all wanted the Tigers to get swept, right?
#Chasing_Tampa
so now we are 5.5 out from Det AND 4 out from WC….fabulous haha
I wanted Detroit to sweep that series. I see Oakland as much easier to catch than Detroit. Well, I thought that 4 days ago…..
apparently, the A`s plan on going into plaid mode for September again this year
I absolutely did, and feel completely justified in holding that opinion. If the Indians had gotten the job done in the last two nights, we would have gained serious ground in the division and set ourselves up for at least the possibility of a fair showing in Detroit. It’s all on us, and not on the performances of other Wild Card contenders. That’s the way it’s supposed to be: You live and die based on what you do, and not on what other teams do. Sadly, the Indians dropped the ball.
Still, I’m rooting hard for a lights-out September. Pollyanna ain’t got nothin’ on me.
Well, really need a win tonight and then they need to show us something in Det and come out with some passion and score some runs. Game last night was a kick in the Jimmy
Making excuses for the home team while hoping other teams do badly is just one of the things Cleveland fans do well. It’s what you do when you know in your heart your team isn’t good enough but you still have hope. Nothing wrong with it I suppose you’d just think by now between the Browns, Indians and Cavaliers it’d be getting old. Live in hope, die in despair!
Oakland is unreal they are once again doing it despite the lack of any real big names. That and really just one power hitter. Billy Beane is a master. Wish he was here. He does more with less. After $5M to Sizemore, $7M to Myers and whatever Reynolds got maybe the Dolans wish he was here too.
mg, I see what you did there. You remembered. Well done.
The Tribe is making the whole Who-should-we-root-for? debate moot.
20 minutes in Oakland up 2-0 on Detroit already. Jed Lowrie with a two-run bomb.
There was a topic about movies and in a previous “While We’re Waiting” we talked about fantasy football. Here is visual evidence of the combination:
