NFL Predictions: Steelers to regress?
August 19, 2013Ranking the teams in the AFC North: Cleveland Browns Roundtable
August 19, 2013Two students in Emory University’s Sports Marketing Analytics program in Atlanta, Georgia compiled a study to determine the most “loyal and supportive” of NFL fan bases. Rather than using straightforward metrics such as ticket or memorabilia sales, the students added items like team win/loss record, area population, and median income to come up with a term titled “fan equity,” an output that allegedly documents what teams’ fans show up no matter what. Fans of the Cleveland Browns came in 20th out of the league’s 32 teams.
The rankings are as follows:
1. Dallas Cowboys
2. New England Patriots
3. New York Jets
4. New Orleans Saints
5. New York Giants
6. Indianapolis Colts
7. Chicago Bears
8. Baltimore Ravens
9. Pittsburgh Steelers
10. Tennessee Titans
11. San Diego Chargers
12. Denver Broncos
13. Washington Redskins
14. Green Bay Packers
15. Carolina Panthers
16. Houston Texans
17. Philadelphia Eagles
18. Minnesota Vikings
19. Cincinnati Bengals
20. Cleveland Browns
21. Kansas City Chiefs
22. St. Louis Rams
23. Seattle Seahawks
24. Buffalo Bills
25. Miami Dolphins
26. San Francisco 49ers
27. Jacksonville Jaguars
28. Detroit Lions
29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
30. Arizona Cardinals
31. Atlanta Falcons
32. Oakland Raiders
While the Cowboys being ranked No. 1 comes as little surprise, there are several franchises (including the Browns) which appear to be disproportionately ranked to their peers, including the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers.

Hoping our boy JakeyStats can help us out with the why of this ranking
It should be noted that this is only based on a period of the last three years.
There is still a clear correlation between on-field quality and these rankings.
I thought Emory was a good school? There seem to be so many flaws with their methodology here
Perhaps a better title for this article would be, “Browns fans arbitrarily ranked 20th on meaningless list compiled by two ‘marketing analytics’ dweebs in Atlanta who ought to get out of the basement more.”
For you folks that didn’t go into the study and read the methodology, here it is:
They calculated what could termed the “expected” consumer demand for each team based on a variety of factors (winning percentage, pricing, stadium capacity, metro area population and medium income, and others). The justification is that each of these factors contributes to what a team’s projected attendance should be. That is, the more a team wins or the cheaper the tickets, the more fans should be expected to attend.
They then contrast these resulting figures with the actual, observed attendance over the last three years. The teams that fared better (i.e. the observed attendance was better relative to the projections) were at the top of the list and vice versa.
It’s obviously an imperfect study – as most any studies are – and fails to take into account team perceptions, history, stadium location (it’s much easier for Clevelanders to get to FirstEnergy than it is for Bostonians to get to Gillette, for example), among other factors.
However, looking purely at the numbers-based, economic side of things, you could make an argument that the study did a fairly good job at analyzing attendance projections and realities.
I’m thinking of a number between 1-32. It’s scientifically based on how I think the numbers should be sorted. I will publish this as a news article so people know how I think numbers should scientifically be sorted between 1-32.
*sigh*
subterranean hata!
Scott just posted this to get all ya’ll riled up. Jump monkeys jump!
It’s much ado about nothing, that’s for sure. I’m amused by the comments though. So I guess I’m a part of the problem and not the solution.
These pissy college math nerds are freakin MORONS. But I’m gonna channel my anger, Scott. Make a list of all the places they should visit in Cleveland and invite them. West side market, Sliman’s, some good pierogis. East 4th Street for damn sure. Cuz I’m tired of everyone always hating on Cleveland without ever living here. This crap is TIRED, man. We can all just take it or do something about it. I’m mad enough to dangle a participle. Probably did.
Sadistic Scott Sargent for a reason!
I live in CA, Raider fans seem to pretty loyal especially when you consider they left LA 20 or so years ago (maybe a lot of their fans from LA have not noticed yet?)
really 20? we have had 1 good season since 99 and we still sell out games, we should have been in the top 5
Ask fans of some of those teams at the top if they believe their teams should be anywhere near that high, and then what they think of places like SEA, CLE, OAK, GB.
I just lived in NY for 10 years. Their most diehard fans would laugh at the idea that their fans are the greatest, and my friends who went on trips to other stadiums (CLE, PIT, SF, PHI, GB, etc.) would consistently come back wowed at the fans there as compared to NY.
