MLB News: Indians sign veteran catcher Kelly Shoppach
August 30, 2013MLB Rumors: Indians to call up Jose Ramirez on Sunday
August 30, 2013With just 24 hours to go until the roster must be trimmed to 53 men, the Browns announced another seven cuts on Friday evening. Here is the casualty list from the press release:
OL Braxston Cave; WR Mike Edwards; TE Dan Gronkowski; DB Abdul Kanneh; RB Miguel Maysonet; DB Kent Richardson; P/K Colton Schmidt.
In general, there aren’t any surprises among these seven cuts. The most notable might be Dan Gronkowski, who also didn’t make the roster last season. The 28-year-old older brother of the Patriots star tight end, Dan nabbed a touchdown catch from Brian Hoyer on Thursday in Chicago. But he was seen as a long-shot anyway to make the final roster.
Maysonet was an intriguing waiver claim back in late May. The small Stony Brook running back was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles. It appears that Brandon Jackson has solidified the backup running back slot anyway.
Punter Colton Schmidt also was a waiver claim from earlier this week. But Spencer Lanning emerged of the hero of Thursday’s preseason finale.
Tomorrow’s moves likely will include some much more familiar names. We’ll see by the mid-evening what’s in store.

I would not be surprised to see Sanford cut tomorrow, too much depth on the DL to keep him, unless the Browns somehow carry 8. D Bryant, Taylor, Rubin the starters; Winn, Hughes, Kitchen, and A Bryant as reserves. Looks like a pretty deep DL to me.
