NFL News: Browns release veteran wide receiver Jordan Norwood

The Browns have released wide receiver Jordan Norwood.

Norwood has had trouble with his hamstring for the last few weeks, limiting his opportunities on the field. The injury, combined with the number of slot receivers on the roster this season was too much for Norwood to overcome and stick with the team.

The Browns traded for Davone Bess during the draft to be their primary slot receiver. Travis Benjamin has played on the outside and in the slot, and Josh Cooper has played the slot well in the preseason. Both Benjamin and Cooper can play special teams and can return punts.

Norwood caught 12 passes in 2012, but nine of those came in one game against the Giants. For his career, Norwood has 36 receptions for 405 yards and one touchdown.

Understand that durability is key in the NFL, this one still saddens me because he did a nice job when healthy and I think he’ll help a team. Hope this early cut gives him a chance to make a roster.

I would rather have him than MoMass and he is still on a roster

I called this earlier today in the Sunday Six Pack… WHERE ARE MY KUDOS??

If you need more than one you’ll have to get it from someone else.

  • Weird to me that Norwood is cut at this stage, let alone at all, while David Nelson gets to play Thursday despite not being healthy all camp.

Kudos. I also tweeted that Norwood would be a prime candidate to be cut among more known guys on the roster. Still waiting for the Browns to cut Sanford since they tried to get rid of him already.

what are the requirements in order to be labeled a “Veteran” in the NFL?

makes perfect sense to me…Banner signed Nelson, Norwood is from the previous regime (maybe the previous, previous regime…they’re hard to keep track of what with all the drinking it causes)

not a rookie. if you make it that far in the Not-For-Long you might as well be considered a veteran.

    I’ll take the one!

I don’t think Norwood was really competing against Nelson for a roster spot… I think he was competing against Josh Cooper. They’re the same size, they can be used in 3rd down passing scenarios, and they can both probably be used as punt returners (I know Norwood can, not sure about Cooper). Cooper was proving to be a reliable 3rd down target in the preseason, so I think this eventually led to Norwood being cut due to his injury history, current injury, and redundancy with Cooper.
