NFL News: Brandon Weeden named Cleveland’s starting quarterback

The official announcement from head coach Rob Chudzinski came today: Brandon Weeden will be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns heading into 2013. Chudzinski said of Weeden, “He’s gone out and earned it. He’s responded very well.”

Weeden has thrown for 229 yards and three touchdowns in two preseason games. He has completed 72% of his passes and has not had an interception.

Weeden started 15 games last season as a rookie. He completed 297 of 517 passes for 3,385 yards with 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He was the first Browns rookie QB to ever start on opening day.

Coach Chudzinski confirmed that Jason Campbell will be the second string quarterback and Brian Hoyer will be the third. All three quarterbacks have performed well in the preseason.

Weeden was informed of the decision on Monday.

Bud Shaw can rest easy now.

Kudo to WFNY for never playing into this absolute zero of a “controversy.”

  • Jaker

Good. Now we can put all that nothingness behind us.

Oh, and it sounds like the team thought the controversy was nothingness as well. Joe Thomas: “there was never really a doubt”

    I just lost a dollar…to myself!

Why would you do that, meow?

Guess this means we’re not moving up in the first round to take Geno Smith.

    Internet = Pants on Fire.

Chud to Banner: “You know what, Joe? Next year just let me say what I wanna say. If Weeden gets brain lock I’ll just bench him. I’m trying to win some respect here and you made me look like a shmuck.”

    Teddy B on line 2.

I’m still holding out hope that the Browns will bring back Colt McCoy mid-season to be our starter.

I’m still pining for ol’ #10.
    Brady! Brady! Brady!

Well, there is always next year…..

There was never any doubt as there was never any competition, Weedhead took almost all of the snaps with first stringers, so what about the competition? I guess that is the Browns idea of competition. Weedhead has definitely shown improvement, but he has not really faced any serious defense. Chud should have waited until after the Colts, but Weedhead should have played the first half and Campbell the third quarter and Hoyer the fourth quarter. I still think Weedhead will fold like a tent with a little bit of pressure, he will cut and run when the times get tough. He will pee in panties at the sight of the Steelers and find another fake injury, so much for his work ethic.

    Weeden remains 1-0 vs. Pittsburgh

Just because he was injured by a PED-induced monster Von Miller and missed a meaningless last game against them last year doesn’t mean much now.

(and I put the PED-induced monster part in for fun)

Any Brown that does not suit up for the Steelers that is not in ICU or ER needs to be sent down the road. When it comes to the Steelers it is “All hands on Deck”

  • Old gaot

Get over it. I am a Colt McCoy fan, but he is gone right or wrong. It is time to move on.

  • Old goat

BTW that is the problem, a loss is a loss only losers think it is okay to lose. There is no such thing as a meaningless game against the Steelers.

while watching Thad Lewis clunk his way through that game, I was with you on being upset. but, afterwards, it doesn’t really matter. what matters is the upcoming season and beating them both times we see them to kick-start this decline I keep hearing about coming for them.

regardless, putting a QB out there with a busted shoulder wasn’t going to help us.

  • mgbode

you are a Colt fan, but you bring up Weeden not being available for the 2nd Pitt game but not the fact that we had to go to Thad Lewis instead of Colt because he too was injured?
