July 28, 2013While We’re Waiting is the daily morning link roundup that WFNY has been serving up for breakfast for the last several years. We hope you enjoy the following recent collection of yummy and nutritious Cleveland sports-related articles. Anything else to add? Email us at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.
Leading off, Fred Greetham of Fox Sports Ohio talks about the free safety position for the Browns and its two main contenders for the starting role, “It is obvious Gipson has impressed both Chudzinski and new defensive coordinator Ray Horton, so far.“I’ve been pleased with Tashaun,” Chudzinski said. “He’s showing a lot from a coverage standpoint. The last couple of days just watching him, obviously we put the pads on tomorrow, so we will get a chance to see all the guys pop. From a tackling standpoint that’s where we will get to see some of the physical things and we will get a little bit more of a chance to evaluate some guys.”” [Greetham/Fox Sports Ohio]
Next up, Michael Hattery at IBI talks more about the bullpen struggles of late, “However, Smith’s ground ball percentage kind of sticks in your eye. Smith is a guy who was tremendously ground ball prone because of the life on his fastball. Smith has a heavy fastball because of his release point and the arm action/spin imparted. Smith has had over a 10% decrease in groundballs which are the backbone of his success as a pitcher. Add in an inflated HR/FB and you see how destructive the increased fly ball rate has been.” [Indians Baseball Insider]
The DrafBrowns crew got a tour of Berea the other day, “When I informed Stehlik, who is a Cleveland fan like many of us, that I and a couple of friends were coming up for a visit to camp, he didn’t hesitate to invite us on an all-access tour of the facility and made sure that we were treated like… well, like we belonged there. Like we were welcome. Like what it said on the sign of the lot across from the facility where we parked… ‘friends and family’ of the Cleveland Browns. Something I have a hard time believing, prior acquaintance notwithstanding, anyone under the previous ownership would’ve offered.” [Alton/DraftBrowns]
Joe Posnanski gives us a good reminder about the wrong side of trading a prospect for a proven commodity in the Wil Myers-James Shields swap, ” It was just a wise-guy tweet, I know. “Too soon,” many people wrote back. But somewhere inside there, maybe, there was a point worth making. Before the season began, the Royals traded Myers for Shields — with several other subsidiary players making it a six-player deal — and I along with many other people despised the deal for the Royals. If you are a team like the Royals (small market, limited resources, longtime loser) you NEVER trade one of the game’s best prospects just as he is about to come to the major leagues. Never. And if you do … well, no, you don’t don’t do it. Not ever.” [Posnanski]
The Ohio State football team held their “Friday Night Lights” this weekend, and Jordan Wagner at Eleven Warriors had plenty of news and notes from the event to share, “Sporting a red “S” on his chest, Eric Glover-Williams was the talk of the camp with many fans asking who superman was. Working out with the receivers, Glover-Williams flashed his speed and sure hands on Friday. Late in camp he moved over to DB and recorded an interception. He is a competitor, which the staff has taken note of. Kerry Coombs told (yelled) campers that Ohio State wants competitors, players that refuse to lose. The rising junior showed that he was scared of no one, repeatedly going up against Ohio State commitment cornerback Damon Webb in 1-on-1 drills. ” [Eleven Warriors]
Finally, there was an incident in Cleveland on Thursday night involving a Rangers reliever on the streets of Cleveland getting “sucker-punched”, “”One of those freak things,” Scheppers said. “I was just getting food and was blindsided. … It’s something you don’t want to be talking about. You want to be talking about baseball things.” Scheppers said he was fortunate that he didn’t suffer more serious injuries. He passed all concussion tests, but was shaken up by the incident and had a headache which kept him out of Friday’s game.” [Big League Stew]
