Browns could carry two kickers in 2013

While neither of them will be named “Phil Dawson,” the Cleveland Browns may consider carrying two kickers into the 2013 NFL season.  ESPN.com’s AFC North blogger Jamison Hensley writes that Cleveland may need both veteran Shayne Graham and the little-known Brandon Bogotay to replace the departed Pro Bowler.

“It’s possible the Browns could use Graham to handle most of the field goals and keep Bogotay for kickoffs and long-range kicks,” writes Hensley. “Keeping two kickers is a rarity these days in the NFL, especially since the league moved kickoffs to the 35-yard line in 2011. Last year, only the Buffalo Bills had a kickoff specialist for an extended period and they cut John Potter after six weeks.”

Graham is the fifth-most accurate kicker in NFL history while Bogotay attempted only three field goals in college, making just one of them. Those who have seen Bogotay in minicamp, however, have been impressed by the youngster’s ability to hit field goals from beyond 50 yards. Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski has referred to the two kickers competing in a “back and forth” manner and that the evaluation is ongoing.

I always knew Dawson had the strength of two men.

Can one of them punt too? Dawson averaged 62 yards last year per kickoff putting him around 26th in the league as far as KO overage (tied for 18th for Touchbacks) but he had the best average starting position in the league at 19.9 the best in the last 4 years if not the history of the NFL by a qualifying kicker.

I am ok with his comment, if we do have two kickers.
Only in Cleveland, will you keep a developmental kicker, but never a developmental QB! We like ours 27 or older and have already proven their level of suck!
