Grantland discusses Browns chances of climbing out of basement

Bynum, recently visiting with the Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks, was reportedly offered a two-year, incentive-laced deal from the Cavaliers that would max out at $24 million. ESPN’s Marc Stein later reported that of the $24 million, only $6 million would be guaranteed due to the performance-based incentives and second-year team option. Despite the team-friendly deal, the Cavaliers were able to guarantee Bynum more than any other team in the league due to their salary cap flexibility. This deal also allows the Cavs to be players in the upcoming 2014 free agency period which kicks off next July.
The 7-footer averaged 18.7 points, 11.8 and just under two blocks in 2011-12 for Mike Brown and the Los Angeles Lakers. If healthy, the 25-year old would give the Cavaliers one of the best centers in the NBA. While many wanted to cast the relationship between Brown and Bynum as toxic, the center reportedly chose Cleveland with Brown representing a “big factor” in the decision.
Recovering from a knee injury that forced him to miss all of 2012-13, the Cavaliers are hopeful that Bynum will be ready for the start of training camp this fall.

My fault bad memory on that one.
Bynum was the second best center just two yrs ago. Not often a team like Cavs can sign recent starting allstar. Tribe defintely made good signings in the day though.
I’d add Hershiser and Martinez to the Eddie Murray level. But while these guy were great – they were all past their prime.
I still think Robbie is the greatest Cleveland free agent signing of all time – 9x All Star, 31years old and was incredible for the Tribe for 3 years. I will say, depending on how Bynum’s time here turns out*, we may look back and say he was the greatest FA signing. Although if that happens, he’s hopefully enticing an even bigger FA to sign here…
*but I’m trying to not get my hopes up!
Lets just hope the nickname is for anything but health issues.
I’d have to agree with Alomar.
This is crazy but the Cavs still have cap room right? How much?
Wow. I know a lot of people are hating this, but I think its the right move. We weren’t going to win the Wiggins sweepstakes, and I don’t think we were even going to be a bottom 6 team, so its time to start surrounding Kyrie and Waiters with the pieces they need to win. Make the future start now! This team went from “potentially good”, to “I can’t wait to see this team play” this offseason. Bennett will have the least amount of pressure any #1 pick has ever had, Zeller can now go to the bench and develop slowly which will help(assuming Bynum is healthy), Andy gets his bench-utility role back(his best role, period), Waiters, Thompson and Kyrie have another season of experience and this team is definitely on the rise. Yes, I know Bynum is no guarantee, but the signing was as team friendly a deal as you will find. Assume the worst: he doesn’t play, he’s a distraction, the team starts to climb from the cellar anyway because of the talent in place. Assume the best: he’s healthy, he plays, he returns to All Star form and we have the best PG-C combo in the NBA with an extremely good(and motivated) scoring 2guard to round out this season’s “Big 3”. Just having Bynum on the floor takes off so much pressure from the other guys and we take that potential and turn it into a playoff team. It’s possible, it’s logical, and I’m excited!
Cleveland Clinic will be on call though

Hair Force One?
Shaq is probably the “biggest” FA we’ve signed. Or Teddy Washington. Are we doing “biggest” by height or weight?
except we traded for Shaq (from PHX) đ
WINNNER!
Not much… I believe they have reached the cap limit but have a 2.5 million exception or something along those lines. Some folks have been talking about Kirilenko, but that’s not happening unless the Cavs trade or cut players.
I still think Gee will be the starting SF over Clark, but we’ll see.
Can’t wait to see the Browns First Energy of the season
The Big Cactus!
Dude, your Astros really suck.
Thinking more on it, Bennett is more of a ‘3’ on offense and a ‘4’ on defense, so perhaps the plan is to try to pair the two together as much as possible and have them flip responsibilities on each end of the floor.
The only time Clark wasn’t significantly better defending SF is his 1 full season in Orlando, which was a mess of a team.
Fro Bros
and, I’m all torn up about it đ
Am I the only one remembering that the Tribe signed both David Justice and Oral Herscheiser? Those two are bigger than this in my opinion. This is huge though! Gonna protect both Kyrie and Dion when they drive the lane bc bigs can’t leave their man anymore. Chris Grant definitely has a plan and its working.
Now you’re using the old bean – get Oden, pick the healthiest of their respective knees and fuse the players. I’ve re-read the NBA rule book and CBA and I see nothing that bans conjoined centers. Plus (and this is big) I see the makings of a pretty decent reality show.
Interesting thought, I could see that happening. Either way, big Earl needs to be practicing those corner threes!
someone mentioned Orel. He was 36yo though and more of an Eddie Murray type signing.
David Justice was acquired in trade for Kenny Lofton.
if you want that reality show to takeoff, then you need to get Delonte West back into the NBA.
and Gee and Karasev and Bennett and Waiters
and Bynum (just to make Mike Brown rip off his designer rims in disgust)
Love it.
You think a guy can sleep with LeBron’s mom and not suffer the consequences? Delonte is gone… there is no Delonte.
Love me some Delonte (fav Cavs player ever) but then you have a show but no team. The locker room can handle only so much percentage of crazy. Even if it’s a mixture of the voluntary and involuntary types. Bynum blabbing about himself while doing his hair, passive-faced Oden trying to drag their torso to the training room, Delonte screaming nonsense at everyone while Mike Brown is listening from his office in his boxers, ironing his pants … that team can’t take the floor.
Andrew Franken-Oden. I like it. I just hope there’s a Kardashian left for it to marry.
hey, he was doing fine until he started sleeping in his car outside the Mavericks training facility and other hush-hush things that made Mark Cuban think he was too crazy to hold onto.
wow, you nailed it on both. I know a guy, I’ll call. There’s always another Kardashian.
the one thing our team is lacking is the 1 legitimately crazy person. maybe Bynum fills that void, but I think his crazy is too benign. Chris Anderson with the Heat, Rodman w/ the Pistons/Bulls, ‘Sheed w/ the Pistons, Sam Cassell w/ all his teams.
It keeps everyone on edge and focused.
I saw an Instagram of him at the Strongsville Target with a Browns helmet on.
Lol. I don’t think it counts when you trade Sasha Pavlovic and Ben Wallace for a big name.
Is there a “super-uptick” on here somewhere? I need one.
Bynum’s just the usual self-absorbed spoiled guy, not within screaming distance of crazy. You’re talking about getting a guy waving a gun he doesn’t know he’s even holding, not the typical player who pulls one because of a card game on the team plane. You want team chemistry, you need both for balance. And you need more than the trunk of home-brew Karasev’s dad will pack for him, so don’t just count on that, Grant.
Yeah, I’m so ready for the NBA season to roll.
As far as I can tell, assuming Bynum’s cap hold is $12m, then they are at $42.3m out of a $58.7m salary cap – without the rookie contracts factored in.
Shaqtus!
Oh sure this one you remembered but not Lofton from your beloved Astros! đ
No rebates suckas!
?? It was already clarified above, but I guess I need to further clarify.
I wasn’t counting Lofton because his first significant action was for us and we signed him back as quickly as we could after trading him away (for Justice & Marquis).
Dude your crazy!
You can say what you want about the momma but Kris Jenner makes some hottie girls. Where that Rob came from I have no idea maybe he’s related to OJ!
LoL nice1!
my crazy is crazier than your crazy
I liked it better when you admitted your mistake at the hands of the almighty $hamalamadingdong!
And that’s the bottom line ‘cuz $hamrock said so!
What are you using to calculate? For example, I don’t think the ESPN trade machine has accurate salaries for the 2013-14 season. Jason Lloyd of the ABJ tweeted yesterday what I said above, and I’ve heard it from other Cavs writers as well.
Don’t make us get the hose!
