Cavaliers cruise to 11-point win over Memphis in Summer League

The Cavaliers improved to 2-0 in Vegas Summer League action on Sunday. Shooting guard Dion Waiters paced the Cavaliers who beat the Grizzlies 69-58.

Waiters rebounded from a terrible game one shooting performance to score 23 points on 7-for-17 shooting. Tyler Zeller added 11 points and nine rebounds. Cory Higgins (Erie, D-League) also had 10 points for the Cavaliers.

The Cavs are set to play their third and final preliminary game today against New Orleans. Following the prelim games, the teams will be seeded for the a Summer League tournament for the first time in the league’s existence.

First-overall pick Anthony Bennett is not playing while rehabbing his injured shoulder. Sergey Karasev is also not with the Cavs’ Summer League team as he is playing with his national team.

Second-round pick Carrick Felix, however, is with the team. Highlights of the game can be seen on the Cavaliers’ team page.

Dion Waiters looked great; he drove to the basketball with ease and made a good number of jumpers as well. Finally demonstrated that he’s above and beyond all these Summer League players.

The best news has to be Carrick Felix. I was bummed when the Cavs missed out on signing Tony Allen, but Felix may be the next best thing defensively. Pairing his high energy level play with Varejao’s is going to create quite the number of headaches for opposing offenses.

    Agreed!

The guys who I thought showed well were Waiters, Zeller, Felix, Dellavedova, Kadji, and Taylor. I know Higgins scored some points, but he looked like he had zero interest in playing with his teammates… every chance he got the ball he looked to do something for himself. Kadji is one of those guys who might perform well in the summer league, but you know immediately that he’s not an NBA player. His jump shot takes way too long to release and he loves to shoot that turn-around-over-right-shoulder right-handed jumper from the left block. He doesn’t get enough separation to hit that shot against good defenders, it’s going to get blocked often. Taylor is interesting… not sure if his decent shooting holds up in an NBA season, but he could have a place at the end of the bench on another team simply because he’s athletic and active. Waiters and Zeller both look to be shaking the rust off their jump shots, but I like the ability around the rim that both guys have shown and they definitely look like the vets out there. Felix and Dellavedova I talked about in the While We’re Waiting comment section, but I’m a big fan of both guys and see a spot for each one on the big-league roster.

Agreed. Dellavedova would be a great backup PG. Doesn’t have quite the offensive prowess Jarrett Jack does, but if you put him in a scenario with a dominant scorer (i.e. Dion Waiters) where he’d only have to facilitate, the kid definitely could thrive.

His defense scares me a bit, but hopefully Mike Brown can work on that.

  • mgbode

this comment makes it seem like Dellavedova cannot score or defend, but can pass.

  • JHop

Pretty much. He does have the ability to get steals on a nightly basis, but can get beat off the dribble far too easily.

  • mgbode

ok, thanks (and he still sounds better than Quinn)

  • JHop

Definitely. In watching the games thus far its obvious who has what it takes on this team and who doesn’t. It’s night and day when you watch guys like Dellavedova and Felix next to Kadji and Quinn.

  • TSR3000

When will Bennett be back to 100%?

  • Vindictive_Pat

He can shoot, but he’s not a scorer. He’s got a funny-looking jump shot, but it’s been fairly accurate both in college and in summer league so far. He’s not a guy who you can leave alone on the perimeter, so that’s a nice thing. I also thought he was better defending the PNR than I thought he would be, but that’s not saying much. He’s willing though, so Brown has something to work with there.

  • Vindictive_Pat

Should be right around the time that he reports to training camp. I could even see him showing up a little heavy at that point with the entire city of Cleveland collectively chewing off their fingernails.

  • woofersus

Even if they have him working with trainers and he loses most of the excess weight I doubt he’ll really be in shape because of the long layoff without any actual basketball and inability to exercise his arms effectively I’m tempering my expectations by expecting a slow start and limited playing time until December or so.

  • Vindictive_Pat

That sounds true enough, and if that were the situation I’d be cool with it. I don’t think the Cavs will really need contributions from him until the first wave of frontcourt injuries hits.

  • woofersus

I made mention of this after the first game. Quinn looks overmatched even in Summer league against guards who won’t make an NBA roster. He made one shot, but he never looked like any sort of offensive threat at all, and mostly just served to dribble up the court, pass safely to Dion, and watch. Dellavedova only had a so-so game yesterday, going 1-5 from the field due to a few poorly advised shots, and committing two turnovers due either a sloppy offensive set or maybe iffy court vision, (can’t tell yet, but both were intercepted passes that were probably too long and sot) but the eye test says he’s the better athlete by a significant margin, has a better handle, is more decisive on both ends, and has better instincts on defense. I haven’t seen either shoot enough to draw comparisons.

by December, at least 2 players have usually broken their face!

  • JHop

The Cavaliers should preemptively make those protective face masks standard issue for all players.

  • Harv 21

great, another reason we can’t attract a star FA. Those masks kill marketability.

  • Harv 21

This is a really weird first in Cleveland pro sports. A #1 overall pick that no one seems to give a hoot about. The Excite-O-Meter needle hasn’t budged a bit.

Me, I’m more excited about seeing the teenage Russian and our retread coach. Bennett will get the free passes of free passes if he just reports in shape and avoids arrest.

  • JHop

Just put some ads all over them. Wouldn’t Kyrie Irving look great with a Horshoe Casino stick across his forehead??

  • Harv 21

we need a contest to guess when and how Andy’s first significant “freak” injury occurs this season. I say it’s a locker room incident, before third home game, tossing the adhesive tape to the inactive Bynum. On follow through smacks fifth metacarpal on Zeller’s angular nose and sustains comminuted fracture. Wants to play through it but team doctor says surgery and pin insertion will speed healing. Then Andy starts doing that involuntary pec-squeeze thing with off-hand and strains opposite rib cage. But these are freak injuries, nothing to worry about.

  • Harv 21

Player marketability, not Dan’s. Of course, Kyrie can go all Ricky Bobby and stick a “Me” across his forehead. We better check with his agent if that works.

  • mgbode

Bynum and/or Bennett will fall on top of him and he’ll suffer a punctured lung. Vegas has already taken it off the books as an option, but if you’re willing to take the action, then…

  • mgbode

Mike Brown should be all over this idea. How crazy would it be to have a rotating series of masks? Opposing players would have to adjust to it as it’d be crazy.

    With the yellow jerseys: http://image.dhgate.com/albu_245992918_00-1.0×0/halloween-mask-masquerade-masks-multi-color.jpg

Then, yellow masks with the red jerseys.

or, we just incorporate all 3 base colors into the mask regardless of uniform:

  • Harv 21

punctured lung isn’t even an injury for Andy anymore, he gets those loudly cheering his teammates from the bench.. The bidding starts with an embolism.

  • Harv 21

yesyesyesyes! Metta World Peace would pay us to play here. Stodgy David Stern is retired, every player is running out of visible tat room, THIS is the new era, bask in the mask, baby!

Hold on … whoa .. gotta take this, Chris Anderson calling …

  • The_Matt_Of_Akron

You know Pepsi is on board.
