I saw this movie the other day and liked it for the most part. Michael Cera’s caricature of himself was pretty hilarious. I laughed a lot more during the first half compared to the second half. I found Jonah Hill’s character to be the most obnoxious… way more than the bro-mance between Seth and Jay. The end of “This is the End” was terribly disappointing for me… they really should have cut the movie short of that final scene as it added absolutely nothing and I think leaving Jay and Seth’s destination a little more ambiguous would have served the movie better. As a Christian I didn’t like the message of “You just need to be a good person and Heaven is your reward” as there is really no base for that statement in the New Testament, but when I considered the source of that statement I realized that I really shouldn’t have expected otherwise from those guys, so it was fine. Probably a few too many male reproductive organs for my liking as well… that joke got old really fast… I laughed the first time when Craig was moving the statue in Franco’s house and that was plenty for me… at some point it just comes across as juvenile.
I thought it was interesting they took a definitive stance on Heaven/Hell/God, etc.
I guess what bugged me about it is that I view it as a bunch of guys who aren’t Christian implying, “This is what we think Christianity is”. I’d feel the same way if a bunch of Christians tried to write a movie where they implied, “This is what we think Buddhism is”. However that’s probably a slippery slope to be going down on a site like WFNY as you start getting into thoughts about absolutism versus relativism, so I’ll just stop there and say that it bugged me, but it didn’t ruin the movie for me, I still really liked a lot of what they did and my dislike of the last scene wasn’t centered around the religious implications… I just thought it was super cheesy.
Yeah I can see it that – I’m athiest so it didn’t make much difference to me on those levels. I thought it was the perfect level of cheesy, but I am prone to enjoy that. haha
I think what I liked most about it is that even though I think each guy was playing a caricature of himself, that there was probably a lot of truth written into the script as well, particularly when it comes to the relationships between each of those guys… you know little dynamics between each guy that were expanded on and hyperbolized (if that is a word) to make them funnier. So in that way you got a bit of reality in a fantastic environment.
