The Cleveland Cavaliers should plan well for 2014 but not just for LeBron James
June 6, 2013Weeden: Browns can be “really, really good” in 2013
June 7, 2013With the fifth-overall pick in the amateur draft tonight, the Indians selected OF Clint Frazier. From the team:
“Frazier, 18, recently graduated from Loganville High School in Loganville, Georgia, where he batted .485 in his senior campaign (47-for-97) with 17 homers, 45 RBI, 56 runs scored, a .561 on-base pct and a 1.134 slugging pct in 32 games. Following the season, the 5’11” right-handed hitter was named the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year.
As a junior at Loganville in 2012, he hit .424 with 24 home runs, earning 2012 All-American honors from Aflac and Under Armour while leading the Loganville Red Devils to the AAAA Georgia state championship. In all, Clint hit a school record 63 home runs throughout his prep career. He has a verbal commit to attend the University of Georgia and is the first overall high school position player selected in the 2013 draft. He is attending the draft at the MLB Network Studios.”
Frazier reportedly has committed to the University of Georgia. We shall see what type of bonus it takes to bring him into the fold instead of going the college route.
According to the Plain Dealer, one former Indians GM is impressed.
“Former Indians General Manager John Hart, an MLB Network analyst, said Frazier “jumps off the board.” Hart said Frazier has Dustin Pedroia makeup in a compact body.”
UPDATE: From Tom Withers:
Frazier said he will definitely sign with #Indians. He had made commitment to play at Georgia. #cashwins

Fraizer may have committed, but he was at the actual draft. He’s going to sign. Don’t worry about that.
As much as I would’ve liked to see a top of the rotation pitching prospect, this kid excites me. He could see the majors before Lindor.
No Chance. Lindor may finish the season in Akron while Frazier will be lucky to see Lake County this year.
Although Frazier’s value may be highest at CF, I’d play him at LF/RF. We have many better defensive CF options over the foreseeable future (Bourn, Stubbs, Brantley, Rodriguez, Naquin, Washington, McClure) and his bat plays anywhere.
while I wanted the 6’6″ LHP Ball, I can certainly understand going with the high ceiling HS OFer.
but, from what Jacob showed yesterday, the guy with the best chance to succeed is M.Gonzalez (pitcher drafted by Cardinals).
How does the budet work? I saw that Tribe has 6.8 M for picks, and projected 3.7 for Frazier. Is that per year or total for a few years?
the budget is for bonus money (so a one-time total, though I think often paid over a few seasons). I think the actual contract’s for minor leaguers is pretty standardized, but I couldn’t find anything concrete in a quick search.
Each pick in the first ten rounds is assigned a slot value. Your budget is the total assigned value of all the picks you have in the first ten round.
What that means in practice is that if you overpay your first rounder, you’re going to have to underpay one or more players farther down the road. It also means the opposite. Last year, the Astros 1:1 pick was a guy they knew they could get for under slot value. They did this so they could get overpay on talent later in the draft.
yes, and we did the same with Naquin. but, that slot money is for the bonus we can give the players. do you know if it is standardized to a one-time payment, over years, and if it affects their actual minor-league contract (or if that is just seperate)?
Oh moneyball…so it is just the bonus that they will pay to sign him?
Yeah, pretty much. This is the system they put in place to stop some teams from spending five times as much as other teams.
Yes, we “reached” on Naquin to save on the signing.
I’m fairly certain the bonus slot money doesn’t do anything to their minor-league contract. As for how it’s paid out, I’m unsure if it’s standardized or something that gets negotiated.
Ball the kid the mighty BoSox drafted? 😉
Frazier will be the long term replacement for Bourn on defense. He won’t be up here until 2016, which will be the last year of Bourns deal, unless we re up him. Our FO even said they see him as a CF in the Longterm. This works out nicely.
Is it just me, or are the Cardinals constantly drafting well? I feel like they have the best farm in baseball, not to mention the best current team in baseball as well. They’re gunna be good for a very long time
Let me spitball here. your 2017 starting lineup…
1-SS-Lindor-S
2-CF-Frazier-R
3-2B-Kipnis-L
4-DH-Santana-S
5-RF-Naquin-L
6-1B-Swisher-S
7-LF-Brantley-L
8-C-Gomes-R
9-3B-Chisenhall-L
This is assuming we decline the option on Bourn and we have one final year of Swisher. Cabrera hopefully was traded for pitching. Brantley is nearing the end, and Carlos is no longer the best behind the plate, but both are the types of Veterans this young new core will need.
Works for me. Now we have to work on our rotation
Hmmm, this assumes we sign Brantley 1 year past arbitration (he would be FA that year). Of course, we could opt-in on Bourn to cover that slot too.
rotation:
Bauer
McAllister
geez, even Carrasco is a FA by then. yeah, sort of light there. cmon Dillon Howard, please pan out.
Jacob listed their best 20 draft picks (by WAR) in the past 15years(I think?) the other day. 19th was Luke Gregerson. 20th was Matt Carpenter. Pretty much a top-to-bottom great list.
The Tribe’s 3rd highest on a similar list was Luke Scott.
yeah. the dominant hitter who also happens to moonlight as a tall, rangy LHP.
(alot depends on his fastball developing. he struggles getting it over 90mph right now)
I think we will end up signing Brantley into his mid 30s. We could do a lot worse in LF. And yea, no kidding about that rotation. Looks like #79 today is gunna be a pitcher
Wow
We’re loaded with Center Field options, all of whom are faster and better defensively. Not sure why you would play him in Center and bump all of these guys out of the way when he could be a plus defender in left or right, where his bat profiles well anyways.
Naquin is the only one who makes sense to move because of his plus arm and lack of elite speed.
BTW Grant is saying that he’s a plus runner with a plus arm, but the consensus around the league is that he’s slightly above average at best running and throwing. Move him to an easier position and let the bat play.
