Weeden: Browns can be “really, really good” in 2013

I really haven’t changed my approach since day one. I’m right where I want to be. Overall I think my progress was pretty good. Each practice got better for myself, not only for me for the offense. I’m pleased with it. Am I satisfied? Absolutely not. […] I think we have a chance to be really good. I’m speaking about the whole team. Guys are flying around on [the defensive] side of the ball just like we are. I think we have the potential to be really, really good.

— Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden, Thursday, on his progress and the potential of the 2013 squad. The Browns are coming off of a two-year stretch where they have combined for just nine wins and play in one of the toughest divisions in football. An apparently positive-minded Weeden added that second-year wide receiver Josh Gordon has the potential to be a “top-three” pass-catcher in the NFL. In 2012, Weeden ranked 29th among qualified quarterbacks with a passer rating of 72.6.

Hey, it’s June. Why not say it.

“I think we have he potential…”
    Story of CLE fan lives…

I’m such a hopeless Browns fan. I eat this stuff up, and when I read these quotations, my heart swells and I think “I can’t wait for this season! We might have a chance!”

Then I go back to the huge stack of work on my desk, my mind returns to bitter, brutal reality, and I realize that there are no unicorns in the world, rainbows can’t be held in your hand, and all leprechauns died in the Great Potato Famine (true story). I then realize that the Browns will, more likely than not, finish 5-11.

So maybe there is hope for me after all? If I can just avoid off-season Browns quotations?

  • mgbode

just remember. 6 wins is progress (and the best season in half a decade!).

  • Tommy

I always doubt when it comes to my Browns. But this year I honestly feel like we may have a decent team. Weeden will be in shot gun where he’s comfortable. That makes me think his numbers will go up. If he is even marginally better this year, we will win 3-4 more games. But it all depends on the play of CB2. We’ll see what happens. But if it pans out, I can honestly see 8 wins and exciting football.

Agree BW, but only if you can take your game to the next level. So make that happen.

    Friday positivities:

    – There were optimistic pre-season reports were issued about Lindy Infante’s new offense.

    – and about Bud Carson’s defense.

    – and rooks Matthews and Newsome.

    – and rooks Chip Banks and Hanford Dixon.

    – and rooks Joe Thomas, Ahtyba Rubin and Billy Winn.

    – and the stunning third year improvement of a QB taken in the 13th round of the 1972 draft who sat for 2 years on the cab squad.

Positive talk does not necessarily result in negative results so buck up, Garry. You don’t wanna be the last squirt chasing after the tubas. Here’s your baton and funky red jacket with the epaulets – go on …

  • Ben Frambaugh

Exactly – I mean, I’d easily be exponentially more concerned if the players actually said something negative about the offense and defense.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

    C’mon man!

  • The_Real_Shamrock

    That would be groundbreaking!

Nobody knows if Richardson can be healthy, the secondary needs improvement, there are other question marks, but every team has these kind of issues. For the Browns, the real question is Weeden. Because a good NFL quality quarterback could, I believe, win with this team. Whether Weeden will be that good, or just another expansion-era Browns QB, is what this season will be about.

  • Garry_Owen

I think it was last Friday that we tried, and failed, to Up The Roo. Maybe I’m just feeling the emotional weight of that forlorn expedition?

I so desperately want to do the backbend and touch the fuzzy thing on my cap all the way to the ground. I really do.

Quick, somebody get a movie quotation up in here!

  • Garry_Owen

And leave it all on the field.

    Give 110%.

  • mgbode

I think you need this one more than a movie quote:

    And so I sing out
    Hang on, Sloopy
    Sloopy, hang on
    Hang on, Sloopy
    Sloopy, hang on
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Give it to ’em right now

  • Harv 21

Just a spoonful of sugar … no, wait … “Shake it up, baaaby now”/”Is that Ferris?” … I got nuthin.

  • Vindictive_Pat

I would argue that he’ll need to give closer to 120%, so he’ll need to steal about 20% from another player. Brian Hoyer, I’m looking at you.

  • Garry_Owen

    Worked for Urban Meyer . . .

  • The_Real_Shamrock

It’s Friday I’m tapped out after all of the Chris puff puff pass Perez stuff. Oh to be young again but man, that looks painful!

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Meyer needs to shut Saban up soon!

  • CB Everett

Sorry. I used my daily quote up on a Clint Frazier thread. But buck up my friend and may all your wildest dreams come true.
