Grossi: Biggest Browns offseason surprise could be Buster Skrine

Everyone knows that the Browns biggest question mark heading into the 2013 season is the secondary. The cornerback position in particular is deep in question, with several unproven players vying to be paired with Joe Haden as a starter.

One of these guys is going to have to step forward and make a name for himself. According to ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi, there has been one player in particular that has been catching a lot of eyes.  Of course. I am talking about everyone’s favorite nickel back, Buster Skrine. He’s been working with the first team in OTA’s, opposite Haden. The Browns starting corner has loved what he has seen from Buster.

“Buster’s playing at a really high level,” Haden told me. “I never saw him play this good before. He’s making plays every day. People aren’t catching the ball on him. He’s doing a really good job.”

Chris Owens, third-round pick Leon McFadden, and Skrine will be locked into this battle through training camp and it will be interesting to see how things play out here.

Always nice to hear this sort of early report. But we’ll have to wait a little to gauge his improvement – little speed guys like Skrine always look better before the real hitting of training camp starts. At his height/strength he’s going to have to turn himself into a master technician and film studier to hang with any receivers except the smurfs running down the seam. Would be wonderful if he’s used the off-season to start doing that.

I’ll believe it when I’m seeing it on Sundays. There was a lot of hype last season about how well Skrine was practicing on the outside and when he got into a real game and lined up on the outside, he crapped the bed repeatedly. I’m certainly rooting for Joe Haden to be correct about Skrine, but I’m not willing to believe it yet.

  • Natedawg86

Speaking of crapping the bed..where did that term come from? I have two kids under 5, and it seems like they would almost have to try on purpose to crap the bed.

  • Vindictive_Pat

Haha, I have no idea but I’ll admit that it makes me snicker to myself every time, no matter how many times. You have to admit it’s pretty apt though… if your two kids under 5 wouldn’t do it, it must be a pretty egregious thing.

  • Slooz

I’m also in the “I’ll believe it when I see it camp,” but they do say it takes most cornerbacks 2-3 years to really grow into the position, no? Haden’s more the exception…maybe Skrine can prove the rule.

Najeh Davenport said it was an accident!

Skrine was an extremely aggressive CB last year. The problem was that he didn’t understand where the line was (D-PI) and the bigger WRs were just too big for him and would catch it anyway (Boldin).

He “could” become a decent CB if he learns how to get away with the antics (Finnegan) while the defensive staff does their best to not match him up on WRs who will abuse him.

Alot of things need to go right there though I am sure he is working hard at it.

  • TSR3000

It’s kind of like “screwed the pooch.” It is not common, but you know someone has done it and it is never good.

  • Harv 21

I found something weirdly honorable in Skrine’s repeated and blatant interference calls last year. Like he was saying “You got me but a flag is exactly the same as a spot tackle and I’m not letting you down the sideline.” Like an honest admission, and who cares what the fans think.

He could be a poor man’s Frank Minniefield, who improved greatly when he started really studying film. But Minnie was a little taller and heavier and definitely a little man who could hit. And, the receivers he covered were not yet quite as tall and strong as now. As you say, a lot of things need to go right with Skrine. Who knows.

  • Harv 21

I think Pat inadvertently conflated the fear cliche (crapped my pants) with a shame cliche. But who among us haven’t.

  • Harv 21

Thank you. Now please unring that bell.

  • boomhauertjs

To be fair, he is guarding the Browns’ receivers…

    Everyone
knows that the Browns biggest question mark heading into the 2013
    season is the secondary

except Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi

  • Vindictive_Pat

Gross… does Buster Skrine know nothing of the miraculous substance known as “dietary fiber”?

  • Vindictive_Pat

I used the second definition outlined here, but used a more appropriate word for this web site.

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=shit%20the%20bed

  • Harv 21

you meant failure, not shameful panic? Fine, but get that weak Urban Dictionary crap outta here. It’s sloppy, often inaccurate, lowest common denominator. The bed crapper of dictionaries.

  • Vindictive_Pat

It’s slang to begin with, Harv… where else would you go for a definition of how the kids are using it these days? I doubt Merriam-Webster is adding “crap the bed” to their next edition 🙂

  • Harv 21

    oxford, baby, always oxford.

[When I go to my kids only get sniggers and eyerolls]

  • Vindictive_Pat

Oh sure, I see… it starts with allowing the Brits to determine the correct usage of their language in our own beautiful country of Ammurica, then it morphs into you offering quarter to redcoats and spitting on the 3rd amendment to the Constitution! I always knew you were a Tory!

  • TSR3000

But we will get 32 sacks a game! We don’t even need to line up anyone in the secondary!!!

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Amazingly no bad comments about Grossi, go figure!

  • maxfnmloans

he’s kind of irrelevant now that he no longer has his bully pulpit. Does anyone listen to KNR anymore? (I really don’t know, being down here in Columbus)

  • Harv 21

[quickly wipes wig powder remnant on bottom of boots, turns framed George pic to wall]

    How dare you.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Listen mister you take that back the WRs are supposed to be great now!

  • The_Real_Shamrock

    Uptick baby!

  • The_Real_Shamrock

If he had reported something negative about Buster there would have been multiple posts here knocking Grossi that’s all. I still like the guy and don’t mind listening/watching/reading him.

  • mgbode

    “their” language?!? how dare you!

if it wasn’t for the Germans, French, Romans, French (did I mention the French?) conquering that island over and over again we wouldn’t have such a mismatched language. on the other hand, we conquered the natives, conquered the English, French, and Spanish interests, conquered the Mexican territories we cared about, and made the language our own.

  • Vindictive_Pat

The Danes and other Norsemen are furious that you left them out, and I’m not sure the Normans would be cool with you calling them “French”, but your point is well received. We stole that language fair and square, and we’re doing better things with it.

  • mgbode

the Normans were Germanic Frenchmen. so, I think they are covered. No excuse for the Danes/Scandanavians though.

  • Vindictive_Pat

    Truth!

  • Harv 21

Sandheden! Have you tried listening to Dansk for more than 30 secs? Horrific. Try watching “After the Wedding.” Wonderful movie, great actors of all types – beautiful, homely, charasmatic …but it’s just brutal to listen to.

  • Vindictive_Pat

Garry_Owen is going to be kicking himself for missing this conversation.

  • Vindictive_Pat

Interesting… no I can’t say that I have ever heard Dansk before. Maybe I’ll try watching the movie with subtitles and see if it syncs up with any Pink Floyd albums. I’d love to visit Denmark though… really any of the Scandinavian countries.

  • Hypno_Toad

    Garth, that was a haiku.

My basic rule of thumb is, when I hear about a Browns player in practice doing much better than was expected, that means the guy he’s lining up against in traffic is underperforming.

For the record, I think Skine can be a good nickel back. But if he’s doing well as a first team CB in practice, I’m worrying about the WR.

  • Tom Wynne

Skrine? Really? If he is anywhere near the top of our secondary charts…we’re sunk!

  • LMK

Can we just remember the Cowboys game from last season? Skrine (and Haden being out) was the reason we lost that game! … I guess we’ll have to wait and see…
