May 28, 2013Bernie Kosar filming scenes for “Draft Day” with Kevin Costner
May 28, 2013“While We’re Waiting” serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.
“There’s long been a debate about the merits of athletes. Should they be considered viable heroes and idols for children? Charles Barkley said no, but plenty of others have differing opinions. It’s not to say sports figures are bad people; they often prove to be upstanding citizens. It’s tough to match them up against service members and first responders, though.
Already in the five months of 2013, tragedies have been a theme of the year. And with each dose of heartache, those charged with protecting us have risen to the occasion. It was never more apparent than in the streets of Boston when police officers ran toward bomb blasts with terror surrounding them. Former Ohio State football player Joe Brown is the definition of selfless. From undrafted free agent to an NFL career, Brown knows what hard work is. In 2003, as he was set to enter his third season in the league, Brown, a defensive lineman, abruptly left the Seattle Seahawks to pursue another career – defending the country.” [Rowland/Eleven Warriors]

Some Cavalier options at the 3- “Dorell Wright – 27 years old, and coming off a tough season in Philadelphia, Wright is a guy who is both a solid shooter and defender. He might be one of the most underrated players in the NBA, as even through Philly’s troubles, he finished the season with a PER of 16. In his last four seasons, he has yet to finish a season with a PER of under 14.5. Conrad was ahead of the curve on Wright, and frankly, he looks to be a perfect fit. You can add Wright an maintain financial flexibilty.
Martell Webster – 26 years old and coming off of his best season in the NBA, he is a guy that I would urge some caution on. His three point shooting the last four years, starting with the most recent one: 42%, 34%, 42%, 37%. Pretty darn good, with some relatively serious fluctuation going on. He is a very good defender, helping Washington as a team to have a top 10 defense in the NBA, impressive for any lottery team. He is a better rebounder for his position than Gee, though he is not elite by any stretch. I expect him to be much more expensive than Wright, and I am not sure the pay-off will be that much better.” [Zavac/Fear the Sword]

Interesting piece on feeding the Browns- “Howerton: “Between breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I always see a lot of meat here. How much meat do you go through a week, how many pounds?” Burnst: “I would say roughly between 700-800 pounds — a lot of protein, but it’s what they need.” [Pokorny/Dawgs by Nature]

Chapman throws at Swisher’s head. Hear Tom Hamilton’s reaction. [Tom Hamilton has the best home run call in baseball]

Been keeping an eye on this series. Five players that could keep Manziel from winning a second Heisman. Turned into six players. None of them is Braxton Miller. [Schwab/Dr. Saturday]

Indians will retaliate. They will get ejected and or suspended. This can be avoided if Chapman would be suspended this morning.
Couldn’t agree more. League, the ball is in your court.
Otherwise, paging Carlos Carrasco…
I was at the game, so I missed all of the antics with the announcers talking about Chapman’s head hunting. Was there any explanation following the game about what Chapman said when Swisher ran past him after fouling out?
also, Louisville and Clemson need to find a way to get out of one of their games and play each other in a pre-ACC rivalry Heisman butting battle. Whoever wins, gets a big boost in the AP & their QB gets the inside track on the Heisman (at least for a little while).
as for Miller, I think most assume the Bucks cannot go undefeated two years in a row (good point) and that the general lack of respect for the Big10 will prevent a team with a loss or two from winning (another good point). he’ll be “on the list” during the season, but an untimely loss will shoot him down the boards. he could get invited, but I’d be surprised to see him actually win it.
but, not as surprised as if a RB from Baylor wins it (no matter how good – if Tavon Austin couldn’t get invited from WV, then a Baylor RB won’t either)
I don’t love any of those “Alright Now We Are Getting Somewhere” SF options that Zavac lists in his article, and I wonder if any of those guys are really as good on defense as Zavac says they are. Budinger and Wright were predominantly guarding backup players if I’m thinking correctly, and I have doubts about how well they can guard starters. Webster is the most intriguing to me… he was very effective when paired with Bradley Beal, which makes me think that he could be effective when paired with Dion Waiters. They are different players for sure, but the attention that Waiters draws can get Webster the open looks he needs… he couldn’t get those looks when paired with Garrett Temple.
Chapman congratulated Swisher on becoming a father then asked in Spanish, “Who’s your daddy?”
Two words: draft Porter!
I’d definitely be in favor of that. If the Cavs go another direction, but still have a draft pick later in the 1st round or in the early 2nd round and they’re able to get Reggie Bullock, I’d like that too.
Porter makes the most sense at this time which leads me to believe if everything remains the same he probably won’t be the pick. For me the perfect scenario is to trade down staying in a position to draft Porter while adding either another first round draft pick now or perhaps next year along with a current decent big man. Depending on the player received would determine whether it would be a first now or in a year for me. That’s in a perfect world of course.
Absolutely. You’d love to see the Cavs bring in a talented big while still being able to keep a high enough draft pick to get Porter. Unfortunately, I just can’t see a way that it happens. That’s why my favorite scenario is getting that Aldridge/Love all-star big while still being able to keep a draft pick to grab Bullock. He doesn’t have Porter’s length, but Bullock perfectly fits what the Cavs need at the starting SF spot. Solid jump shooter with range that looks to extend to the NBA 3-point line. Active feet on defense and seems good at reading passing lanes. Rebounds well for his position and has a knack for coming away with the ball when rebounding in a crowd. Solid perimeter passer who can also feed the post. Shows a high basketball IQ. Competent finishing around the rim and excellent in transition. The things that he’s not so good at doing are things that won’t be too much of an issue playing with Irving and Waiters… he’s not great at dribbling or driving to the hoop and he’s not a guy you want going ISO. I like him a lot for what the Cavs need at SF.
I see what you are saying about Bullock, but he plays too soft for me. Even halfway decent SF’s are going to make a living off of posting him up and abusing him underneath. And, he will need to figure out how to dunk at the next level.
If we take him at 31, then I’m okay with it, but I think there are better players to be had at 19.
That’s fair, I haven’t seen much of Bullock defending the post, but if you’re worried about dunking, look the other way when (if) the Cavs select Otto Porter. He dunks about as often as Mark Price.
and you have also probably noticed I’m not a Porter proponent 🙂
Snell and Mitchell have much more upside than Bullock. They also have considerable more risk. I’d bet that one of them becomes a much better player though and trust Grant to figure out which one it is 🙂
Dunking is overrated just ask Tony Parker!
Or Tim Duncan.
And don’t forget they once again have great coaching to develop guys under too. Ya know like they did with Shannon Brown, Danny Green and JJ Hickson!
I think it really is. LeBron’s dunks are a fantastic spectacle, but he lays the ball up far more often and it’s just as effective.
Everyone loves a great dunk but if you watch a game nowadays it seems like there are fewer of them. Another, small reason, why I’m not on the Nerlens Noel bandwagon.
it’s not the dunk itself though. it’s the fact that they lack the explosive athleticism in college to do them effectively worries me that they lack the explosive athleticism to become fringe allstars in the NBA (which is the least level we need out of these guys).
they won’t just add another first rounder this year. They already have to dump some of their existing 4 picks, given how young the rest of the team is and Grant’s need to start competing.
