MLB News: Still No Timetable for Michael Bourn’s Return

Lost in the shuffle of the Indians’ offensive prowess over the last few games is that they’ve been doing it without their table-setter and $48 million man, Michael Bourn.

Bourn suffered a lacerated finger after being unceremoniously trampled on by White Sox reliever nearly three weeks ago.  After hitting the DL and eventually having his stitched removed last week, Bourn is evidently still not ready and there is no timetable for his eventual return.  According to Jordan Bastian, he has not yet been cleared to take batting practice either.

Drew Stubbs has been manning CF in Bourn’s stead, and has a .253/.315/..361 line.  That’s not great, but so long as the middle of the lineup hits like they have been, no one’s going to notice much.

  • What did they say on the broadcast last night? Possibly rehab next week once the swelling goes down?
This roster flexibility has really worked for the team, not having a set DH, and having guys that can play all over the diamond. It also helps that those extra pieces are all contributing in some way.

He’s not goldbricking. Cameras keep showing him stuck in the dugout next to Swisher, with Swish up in his face like a 5 year old with his daddy when the ice cream truck comes down the street. I’m worried Bourn is about ready to consult a Miami anti-aging clinic in a desperate attempt to get back on the field.

Raburn has us forgetting about Bourn for the moment as well…

Forgot Giambi, the part-time DH. He can’t play in the field anymore, but Aviles, Raburn, Swisher, and Reynolds mask this weakness.

Bourn isn’t really hurt, he just wants to let Raburn have his 15minutes 🙂

  • that was my point though, Hafner was the full time DH, even though he should have been oart time (look at his start with the yankees) Yet every manager had him pencilled in at DH (when he was able to play) Now the team plays different guys at DH throughout the week, gets players a partial day off, and will hopefully keep players fresh throughout the season.

In any other year the Bourn injury would have sunk this team for the season (see: every sizemore injury in recent seasons) now they can simply shuffle the OF players around, plug in a reserve player, and the team goes on.

Honestly, though, I do believe that some of this has to do with Raburn. “No timetable on Bourn” is probably translated, at least in part, as meaning “the Indians don’t want to be forced into a decision to bench Raburn just yet.”

I don’t think Bourn’s return necessarily means the bench for Raburn given his versatility. He can spell almost anyone if needed.

  • Garry_Owen

Yeah, I agree – but who do you spell right now? Kipnis? He would be the only “regular” that I’d be willing to spell, but I wouldn’t want to do it long-term. And I’d also like to see Aviles get more playing time.
All in all, this is a problem of luxury. I’m okay with it!

  • Wow

Speaking of Swisher, how crazy, that the guy we paid the most for is barely contributing.
