May 3, 2013As the Indians were settling on which players would make the club out of spring training, one of the cuts that had to be made was OF Ezequiel Carrera. Carrera was designated for assignment and did not make it through the waiver process. He was claimed by the Philadelphia Phillies. Today the Indians returned the favor.
“The Cleveland Indians have claimed OF EZEQUIEL CARRERA off waivers from Philadelphia. To make room on the club’s 40-man roster, 1B MIKE McDADE has been designated for assignment.
Carrera, 25, has appeared in 13 games for the Phillies this season. He was in Major League camp with the Indians this spring (.279, 12-for-43, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 11 SB) before being designated for assignment on March 25 and claimed off waivers by Philadelphia on April 2.”
Ezequiel is a career .250 in the big leagues. He is probably most fondly remembered for his game winning bunt way back in May of 2011.
Those who choose to look deep between the lines might wonder if this has anything to do with Michael Bourn’s injury.

In claiming him off waivers can they assign him to Columbus or are we in the same situation again where he’s got to be on the MLB roster or go through waivers again?
I’m pretty sure they would have to get him through waivers again for him to go to Columbus.
I would guess this move is also related to Swisher’s shoulder trouble.
Use him for trade bait later when guys get hurt
I’m pretty sure he’s still an outfielder Rick. I love that I can finally catch someone else’s headline. 🙂
Funny. Our two biggest offseason additions are both hurt. Typical Cleveland…
So they’ll try to get him a couple ABs and when they must make roster room they’ll designate him again. He’ll hope some other team bites, the Tribe will hope no one does and that their continued interest induces him to sign with Columbus.
I don’t feel sorry for any of the relatively few players who make it to the majors. But for fringe guys like Zeke, it is an interesting lifestyle.
