MLB News: Indians claim Robert Whitenack off of waivers
April 3, 2013While We’re Waiting… Chris Perez on… Chris Perez
April 4, 2013TD sounded like garbage, partly because he was sick and partly because wherever it was in these United States of America that he was holed up in a hotel this week had garbage internet connections and equally garbage cell phone reception. What wasn’t garbage was our conversation following a Tribe win in Toronto as they made up for a Chris Perez blown save.
- The Tribe start 2-0
- Perez blowing a save isn’t that big of a deal
- Ubaldo and his upcoming start in the home opener
- Brandon Phillips
- Michael Brantley and Carlos Santana in the 5-6 holes
- Protection from Swisher
- Eric Wedge and how Mark Shapiro had to fire his “partner”

You know who’s dumber than the Indians for giving up on Phillips? People who have selective memory with the scenario. We act like everyone knew Phillips was talented except the FO. When he stunk it up in 2003, there was more than a small sentiment of fans who thought he was busted. We also act like the poor relationship between Wedge and Phillips was all Wedge’s fault, which is just ridiculous. Phillips was a known pouter at the time, and after being demoted, there were reports that he was frequently the last one to show up at the park in Buffalo. The Indians called him up in the middle of 2005 to see if working with the major leaguers would be the kick in the pants he needed to put it together. He didn’t put the necessary work in. Not until the Indians got sick of putting up with him and DFA-ed did he realize what kind of work he needed to put in.
And still the talk about protection, without much evidence of its existence. Brantley and Santana are hitting well because they are, wait for it, good hitters.
And MLB highlights are now available online. MLB just held on to make sure they could properly monetize the process. And MLB sure as hell isn’t dying. Have you seen the TV contracts recently handed out? A lot of people are making a lot of money off baseball, and it isn’t because fewer people are watching.
I liked this except the opening where you felt the need to attack. No reason you couldn’t have expressed this nicely.
The rest was an interesting perspective. I haven’t really thought about it that way. I just have used the Phillips example as short-hand for front office bungling. Maybe you’re right though.
So it’s kosher for you guys to call the FO dumb, but you’re going to complain when the stick is being poked back at you? The term was only used because you guys deemed it an acceptable term to use first.
Yeah, I’ll agree that the FO didn’t handle the Phillips situation well. Shapiro has even admitted as much. But the conversation is so one-sided. We hear about how much Wedge supposedly despised Phillips, but we don’t hear that came after Phillips absolutely blew up on John Farrell, which wasn’t Phillips’ only run-in with management.
Brandon Phillips not succeeding in Cleveland was 100% on Brandon Phillips and no one else.
