The Browns and the First Round: Barkevious Mingo
April 25, 2013Fun with Numbers- Draft Day edition!
April 25, 2013After a pre-draft season of wavering between sides of the ball as well as position, Scouts Inc.’s Todd McShay has the Cleveland Browns selecting West Virginia’s Geno Smith with the sixth-overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
A trade-down scenario remains on the table for Cleveland who, as recent as last night, was considered the biggest X-Factor by NFL Network’s Mike Mayock. The Browns are notoriously tight-lipped and the variance of the mock drafts that have been published is a testament to just how big of a question mark Berea is on Thursday evening.
It is worth noting that it was just a few weeks ago when McShay said that Smith was not a first-round talent.
“I don’t have a true first-round grade on Smith, and I don’t feel great about slotting him anywhere in the top 10,” McShay said. “But we all know the drill — quarterbacks will get bumped up the board come April 25, and Smith is likely to be the first quarterback off the board. … If he’s still on the board at No. 10, that’s when things would get interesting because there isn’t a team with a pressing need at QB until we circle back around in Round 2.”
A selection of Smith with the sixth-overall pick would undoubtedly mean the end of Brandon Weeden’s tenure with the team. McShay’s counterpart at ESPN, Mel Kiper Jr., has the Browns selecting Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner, adding that Smith is also in play.

no, that’s not how it works. now we laugh at McShay. we don’t start panicking until we trade up with JAX giving away our entire draft and then draft Geno Smith.
I’d much rather take a flyer on Brittney Griner at #6 than Geno Smith.
Not going to happen, no reason to take a QB in the 1st. I would like to look at the past 5 years worth of ESPN mock drafts and see how many are completely wrong….
The Vegas over/under for draft fail is currently set at “Monumental”.
Any takers?
Y.. You do know we’re talking about the Browns here… right?
Oh right right.. I thought it was a little to early to start sweating in my office chair. Hahahahah stupid McShay.
HA! I remember the days when I also thought ‘reason’ steered Browns draft decisions.
Ge Hell no
I smell an attempt to get another team to trade up for an extra pick or two by planting some BS with Yahoo …
Manziel, Bridgewater or Boyd next yr if needed… Please NO G NO
BELIEVELAND
… and with the Browns on the clock, a Philadelphia intern snuck up behind McShay and yanked off his mask to reveal … Joe Banner, a cellie in each ear, maniacally laughing while fielding trade-down offers from the desperate.
but seriously, I might need therapy if they did this.
Banner keeps insisting that our draft picks will be based on a consensus of three or four people. So while I can imagine that there might be one guy in the room who wants Geno, I can’t imagine that there will be a consensus on him.
No… More… Mock… Drafts…. Can’t… Wait… Till… Draft… Over…
If we take Geno Smith at 6, I will definitely be taking a cab home from the bar tonight.
You’ve seen the decisions this franchise has made at QB for 13 years, and now you’re finally ready to panic?
And yet this team will desperately need a QB (and a young one at that) before it ever makes any kind of move towards contending. Geno isn’t my favorite, but going with Weeden again doesn’t do anything for this organization. Take a risk, maybe you get lucky.
This morning, McShay said the Chiefs would take Eric Fisher
and Luke Joeckel would drop to #11. Now, he has Joeckel back at #1. These guys
are just throwing darts.
