NFL Draft Rumor: Browns trying to trade up to land Geno Smith
April 25, 2013Joe Banner and Rob Chudzinski on first round draft pick Barkevious Mingo
April 26, 2013With the 6th pick in the NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns selected Barkevious Mingo.
Mingo, a Junior Defensive End from LSU, is an impressive pass rusher who has been part of one of college football’s best defenses the last 3 seasons. With the Browns switching to a 3-4 defense they will hope Mingo can provide them the edge rush and consistent pressure the defense needs.
Here’s Mel Kiper’s profile on Mingo:
Production | 3 | 2009: Redshirt 2010: (13/1) – 35-5.5-2.52011: (14/3) 36-15-8 2012: (13/10) – 38-8.5-4.5Career: 11 PBU, 4 FF, 3 FR |
Height-Weight-Speed | 1 | Tall, linear frame with room to add bulk. Outstanding top-end speed for size. Ran a 4.58 40-yard dash, including a 1.59 10-yard split at the combine. Also turned in a 37-inch vertical jump, a 10’8′ broad jump, and a 6.72 three-cone drill (all of which first or second among DL at the combine). |
Durability | 1 | Played in all 40 games (14 starts) during three seasons of eligibility at LSU. Flexible athlete. |

Dad is Hugh Mingo and mom is Barbara Johnson. Has four siblings: Hugh Mingo III, Hughtavious Mingo, Malik Johnson and LaDarian Johnson. |
And here’s DraftBrowns.com’s Brendan Leister’s profile:
Overall, I am a big fan of Barkevious Mingo. I didn’t have high expectations coming in, but I actually liked what I saw from him in 2012. He simply wasn’t asked to put heat on the quarterback off the edge every play in LSU’s defense. It seemed as though he was coached to be extremely aware every play and to take running backs out of the backfield and to give up on his rush early if it meant that he could knock down passes. I cannot be certain that he was coached to do these things, but that was what I took away from watching a lot of his games. Had Mingo been asked to come off the edge every play with reckless abandon as many pass rushers are asked to do, there is no doubt in my mind that he would have been a lot more productive from a statistical standpoint. If Mingo can learn to consistently fire off the snap low on a consistent basis, he has a chance to develop into an elite pass rusher at the next level.

Mingo the Merciless.
(yes, I just dated myself horribly.)
I wish I had more hands, so I could give this comment four thumbs up!
BUT HE’S RGIII!!!!
I thought it was interesting how long it took Milliner to come off the board.
The Browns were going to be a sub .500 team regardless of who was drafted last night…
what we thinking about this pick? i wish we traded down
I was just being an internet tough guy… I got nothin’.
let the game come to you
I’m good with it and I do like Mingo’s prospects quite a bit. He’s a great fit as 3-4 OLB.
This MUST be the chant every strip sack
exactly. Once the tackles were gone they lost potential trading partners with high enough picks to get one of their top-rated guys.
My biggest worry was that they would force any trade to get a second rounder. I’m glad they had the courage of their convictions to draft impact players for their new system, even if they still think using the second rounder on Gordon was stupid.
Agreed, I have no qualms with what they have done so far. If I had to guess, I don’t think OG gets addressed in this draft. I think CB, S, and TE do, but I don’t know in what order. I’m terrified at the prospect of starting Buster Skrine at CB, but it’s a very real prospect right now.
This new FO clearly embraces the latest philosophy that the best way to offset rule changes assisting offense is to make the QB sweat, and that the heat is best applied directly to the QB’s body, not to his receivers, not to his psyche by frustrating him.
They did try to get corners in FA (they courted one with a private jet ride). I’m guessing they felt the quality of D-linemen in the draft was just better than the quality of the secondary and, as Banner said, they cannot fill all holes in a single year. If they don’t pick a corner or safety tonight I’m sure they’ll do some spackling in training camp when other teams make their cuts.
please, do not attempt to use truth to mess with the accepted narrative. The Browns are always stupid, no exceptions. Now sit down.
CB in the 3rd. Lots of CBs in this draft. My favorite ‘under the radar’ guy is Will Davis (Utah State), but Banks, Taylor, Poyer all still on the board too and a few others. We’ll see what happens.
his likely landing spots were: JAX, Detroit, CLE, NYJ
JAX – decided to go LT for their 2014 draft pick Manziel/Bridgewater. Cannot blame them for that one.
Detroit – went pass rush
Cleveland – went pass rush
He was probably just behind the guys taken at #5/6 (though Banner said we had trade-down setup if no Mingo). Rushing the passer will always be more valued than covering 1 particular WR, so it makes some sense.
where are the T-shirts? It’s been 12 hours already!
I agree… I really hope there is a starter-caliber CB there for the taking with the 3rd round pick, and that Banner actually takes him.
The first SEVEN picks of this draft were players who either get to the
passer or prevent that. Same is true for 17 of the first 32.
You don’t
get to the QB, you get tore up. Doesn’t matter if you have the best
defensive backfield in the NFL, you give the Brady’s, Rodger’s, and
Manning’s of the world enough time and they will find an open receiver
every time. I assumed this was common public football knowledge, but
now stand corrected.
then get Escobar in the 4th and I’m good 🙂
What’s an “Escobar”?
Agreed, I think the other plus here is that Mingo should really be a sideline-to-sideline tackler in addition to being a pass rush threat, which will help shut down the outside-the-numbers run game, and the screens and option plays that are so popular, not to mention the new breed of QBs who are getting out and running in space. When you watch film of Mingo at LSU, what you see is a guy who is always around the play regardless of which side of the field it’s being run. I don’t see this guy as a pure pass rusher… he’s versatile in that respect like Kruger is on the other side.
