MLB News: Trevor Bauer to start on Saturday versus Rays

The Cleveland Indians will promote prospect starting pitcher Trevor Bauer on Saturday to take the place of injured starting pitcher Scott Kazmir. Reported out of Toronto this afternoon, Indians manager Terry Francona said that 22-year old Bauer will get the nod while Carlos Carrasco serves a six-game suspension.

Kazmir will miss up to three starts after being placed on the disabled list with a right rib cage strain. Off during the first two nights of the season, the Indians are greeted with 13 straight games without a night off so it is conceivable that Carrasco would be promoted at some point after his suspension — stemming from an incident in 2011 — has been served. Bauer and Carrasco were in competition with Kazmir and others for the final spot in the Indians’ rotation this spring.

Bauer was 12-2 with a 2.42 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 157 strikeouts in 130 1/3 innings in 22 starts among Double-A and Triple-A last season in the Diamondbacks organization. He was the main piece of the trade which sent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo to Cincinnati this past offseason and is considered a top-20 prospect in all of baseball.

    Hmmm…that didn’t take long

If he goes and pitches lights out, he’ll make it really hard on Tito to send him back down. After the way Myers threw today and all of Spring Training, I am ready to move on from him. Let’s hope Bauer is the man on Saturday.

First start for Myers against a homerun hitting team who was due to breakout. Unfortunately for Myers he was consistently missing pitches and Toronto hitters were not. That being said Myers was one of the concerns for the rotation. Masterson and Jimenez had answers for their questions Myers did not.

little soon for that kind of thinking, don’t ya think? Give the kid until May at least

I’m not sure I like the move, but since it’s happening regardless I’ll be interested to get a look at Bauer. I didn’t get a chance to see him at all during Spring Training.

It’s probably only for one game; if Carrasco wasn’t serving the 5th day of his suspension, he’d be the starter. I do hope MLB.com starts their broadcast early enough to watch the warmup routine!

This is an aggressive move. Something Acta or Wedgie would have never done. The kid was penciled in to start the opener for Columbus but was scratched the second something came up with Kazmir. I had thought..assumed, it would be Kluber taking his place, the safe choice. But, I like this a lot, it’s a win-win. Either he impresses and we find a pasture to leave Myers in or he gets rocked and maybe loses his punky know-it-all edge a bit. Hoping for the former. And hey, if we keep winning and playing exciting baseball, a stud Rookie pitcher making his debut only stokes the flames.. Love it.

Acta went to Alex White in April 2011. I don’t think Wedge really had to deal with any early season injuries in his rotations.
