Cavalier Film Room: Some People Call Him Marreese
February 1, 2013While We’re Waiting… Cavs’ Rising Stars, Ohio State Niners, and Mike Holmgren
February 2, 2013Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said today that his team will not only bring in a new quarterback this offseason, but whomever they sign will compete with Brandon Weeden for the starting job.
“I think [Norv Turner] and [Rob Chudzinski] have been very open that they like a lot of what Brandon [Weeden] does,” said Haslam, “but we’re going to have competition at that position, and I think competition makes us all better and we’ll see where that competition comes from.”
The Browns have been rumored to be in the mix for the potential services of current San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. Smith is likely to be released or traded this offseason and he has a history with Turner, the team’s recently signed Browns offensive coordinator. Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer has also linked the team to Michael Vick due to his history with former Eagles front office wizard Joe Banner.
With the NFL’s free agency period set to kick of on March 12, the Browns will once again take part, but will not look to make any large moves.
“[The front office] is going to look at free agency and we’re going to look at the draft, and I think we’ll be selective in what we do in free agency,” said Haslam. “I don’t think you’ll see us making any big splashy, high-priced moves because I think we’ve said all along we’re going to build through the draft.”

I wouldn’t mind Alex Smith being our starting QB, but STAY AWAY FROM VICK!
I’m all for QB competition. They should have had some last year. But if Weeden doesn’t win the job, it means we blew ANOTHER first-round pick. That would be hard to take.
Come on, Weed-Man, show everybody that you’re worthy of that first-round pick. Please don’t go all Brady Quinn on us.
BTW, anybody else a little leery of Haslam making player personnel pronouncements?
Please not Michael Vick.
Don’t I get a shot, boss?
Call me crazy, but shouldn’t we at least wait until we have a QB on the roster who can compete for the starting job (sorry Colt) before we start announcing our QB competition? Sort of makes us look like a bunch of jackwagons, plus it now puts unnecessary pressure on the FO to bring in a QB who can compete. What if Smith spurns us? Or san fran trades him, or we’re just left with not picking up any QB options. Does BW have a competition with himself?
I am going to take this on good faith that Haslam is involved enough that he knows that this is an acceptable thing to say for everyone else involved. I am praying he didn’t make the pronouncement by cell phone while quail hunting, and his next call was to Banner to tell him he’d better find a 2nd QB for the competition.
If nothing else its a huge improvement over when reporter asked Lerner the same question regarding DA/Quinn;
Reporter: “Will we see a competetion for the Quarterback postion?”
Lerner; “What’s a Quarterback?”
Agree 100%
I know I am in the minority but with our O-Line I think MIke Vick might actually be a good idea. He was running for his life all season. When he gets time to throw he can be dangerous.
I can see bringing Vick into the dawgpount in 1995, but why now?
Why would Haslam publically say they are going to bring someone in and hint as to what the organization is looking for? I am afraid in the future one of his tips will get out and drive up the price on something that we want.
Weeds had plenty of time to throw, he just let the DL block the passes
Everything new is old again.
yes, you can have the company flu shot
Not a wonderful pronouncement, but totally expected. And if Weeden can’t beat out Alex Smith or whatever other second tier quarterback he’s competing with, it will be no great loss.
well, Weeden was a bottom third QB last season. if he catches on quickly under Norv, then he can be our starting QB. if not, then someone else better step up.
honestly, this is about as non-news as it gets. we all know Weeden struggled. we all know we better have another option to start if he struggles again.
Honestly, I wished they would just shut the hell up until March 12th… all these comments are going to be spun one way or another to make the Browns looks bad. Keep a lid on it Jimmy!!!
That’s my point. I think Weeden might be decent but he had all day to throw all season and made a lot of bad decisions.
Wouldn’t be a Browns offseason without a QB controversy.
The grass is green, the sky is blue, water is wet…
JaMarcus Russell is attempting a comeback.
I’m sure Lombardi has already been in contact.
There’s a $30 co-pay.
This. He makes bad decisions with the football. Often.
or if you prefer: Lerner: “Pretty sure that’s the guy who plays in between the fullbacks on a football pitch. We’re talking Aston Villa right?”
Villa is probably going to get relegated this year too, so things are looking a little rough for Lerner.
that’s cheap man. you have to waive that co-pay so our scout team QB doesn’t miss any practices.
he was just paid $1billion. i think he’ll be okay (and if he reinvests in Aston Villa, they will too).
OH MY GOD
Yeah it’s not looking good for the Villans… their personnel is just awful. They can’t score and it doesn’t look like they’re going to get any help there.
I’m calling my shot now.
I think EJ Manuel is
the Browns starting QB in week1 (keeping with our tradition of having a
new week1 starting QB nearly every year since ’99).
Trade-Up to the 2nd round to get him.
2013 EJ Manuel???
2012 Brandon Weeden
2011 Colt McCoy
2010 Jake Delhomme
2009 Brady Quinn
2008 Derek Anderson
2007 Charlie Frye (1 half only, but he was the guy who started)
2006 Charlie Frye
2005 Trent Dilfer
2004 Jeff Garcia
2003 Kelly Holcomb
2002 Kelly Holcomb
2001 Tim Couch
2000 Tim Couch
1999 Ty Detmer
Jimmy Haslam saving money by being the PR/spokesperson for the team.
My favorite sentences regardless of the sport, ““[The front office] is going to look at free agency and we’re going to look at the draft, and I think we’ll be selective in what we do in free agency,” said Haslam. “I don’t think you’ll see us making any big splashy, high-priced moves because I think we’ve said all along we’re going to build through the draft”
I take this to mean “the process” will take longer then expected.
Very good question perhaps he just can’t help himself but for me this sounds all to familiar.
Deja deja deja vu.
That’s true, $1 billion is a lot of cash. And it’s probably enough for him to finally buy that cloaking device that makes him invisible to everybody in the world. Or even his own outer space hideaway.
Al Lerner is rolling over in his grave, again!
Confused by this one. The 2nd and 3rd paragraphs contradict each other. You state that the Browns are “rumored” to be interested in Smith and note that MKC says we are “linked” to Mike Vick. Then you proceed to quote Haslam saying we will not make a “big splash” in free agency. How do you reconcile these two facts?
My guess is that the Smith/Vick rumors are just made up by MKC and Grossi to get page clicks…. Seems to be working I guess.
Be forewarned: our mishandling of Colt’s vaccination may lead to systematic changes in NFL inoculation policies
A Japanese koan for you: If Haslam shot Joe Banner while quail hunting, would Banner’s facial expression change?
mandatory team phlebotomists may sound like a good idea, but that’s just one more person on a team that is good at using a needle.
Anyone but Derek Anderson
But on the bright side, it’s also one more person in the community from whom one can request playoff tickets
Make everybody think we’re desperate for a QB while we wait out Weeden for another year and snag some draft picks or sneak into a good FA deal because some other team ate up Smith’s cap space?
Michael Vick joins the Dawgpound… No thanks.
I really hope we don’t overspend for whoever this competitor will be. Hopefully it’ll be a mid round pick or a 4 mil a year backp, because I really don’t wanna spend high picks or 10+ million on a guy who may not even start. Maybe I’m crazy, but I Really hope Chud and Norv like Weeden and can make him successful. That’s not too far fetched, is it?
I think your right. I think it’s a “competition” to try and improve Weeden’s game
“Banner likes Vick, according to sources, but he’ll be 33 in June and is coming off a poor season.”
More of those “sources”, from Mary Kay. Wasn’t it “sources” that told her the Chipper was gonna be a Brown?
Bottom line- If BANNER is the one to get a Vick signing through Lombardi, Chud, and Norv, then we know the next 5 years are gonna be tough ones at the Factory.
I’m hoping that is the ONE thing Weeden does better in season #2.
It really should be. Then again, it’s a new system, yada yada….bottom line, we’ll quickly find out if Weeden is as strong between the ears as his arm is.
Whenver I see “according to sources” in a PD article, I immediately stop reading. Most of these “sources” are just other reporters who’ll respond to MK and Grossi’s texts.
wait a sec – they have Christian Benteke, who is nasty. a brace today, in fact. They can’t defend, though. And money’s certainly on them to be headlining the Championship next year…
colt mccoy is the best option the browns have he is a proven winner and should be the guy in cleveland
Colt 6-15 .286 winning%
Weeden 5-10 .333 winning%
Derek Anderson(UFA) – as Brown -16-18 .471 winning%
So, clearly, going by pure winning% as that is OBVIOUSLY the best tool to judge QBs, we should sign Vince Young (31-19 and an UFA).
or maybe we go a little deeper. whichever.
