Wow. Astros at 59.5. Even if they exceed the Vegas expectations, they may lose 100 games. They’re going to be a historically bad, cheap team. Right now their highest paid guy is making $3M. That’s like having Joe Smith as the star of your team. Still, if you’re going to rebuild, may as well rebuild. Local rant off.
My sons love baseball and they love 2 teams in particular: the Indians and the Astros. I hope they still love baseball a few years from now.
(and Houston is definitely going the way of the Nats on the rebuild. They know they have the big market to grab a bunch of FAs when necessary, so they are tanking for high talent picks first)
Heh. As a Clevelander in Houston, those are my teams too.
How old are they? My favorite teams of my youth were those god-awful 80’s Indians teams with their revolving door of has-beens and never-weres. That’s the beauty of being a kid – winning doesn’t matter. It’s more the majesty of baseball and all that Field of Dreams stuff.
I know you’re down in Texas. Been to Minute Maid? Great place to see a game, especially for a dome. My advice: sit on the right field line to get the backdrop of the train and skyline. Indians are actually in town the weekend of April 19th. Think I’m one of the few who actually are excited about the move to the AL.
As for the ‘stros – they were in a really bad place. No farm system, old and overpaid vets, minimal young talent on the pro roster. They’ve done a great job in my opinion over the last year. I like their front office. Getting Lowrie and then flipping him was larceny. Like I said, if you’re going to rebuild….
my boys are 6(coach-pitch) and 5 (Tball). they love the Astros red jerseys. I’m going to the apr.20th game there in Houston and I figured I’d let them decide if they want to wear Indians or Astros stuff to the game.
and yeah, for baseball, they just seem to love that MLB players can do things that seem impossible to them. since they play, they understand somewhat of how hard it really is.
the weird thing is that in football, they gravitate towards the winning teams no matter how hard I push. they both loved Seattle and SF this past season (just the idea that the QB will actually run the ball is fun for them). i refused to let them like the ravens though (easy sell as it turned out since they wear purple).
yes, I go to a couple games a year at MMP. always sit in the corner of RF lower deck for those reasons + my boys love spending a few innings at the kid-park they have behind 1B. the whole thing is enclosed except for the part for kids – whoever thought of that was an idiot, but oh well.
and, yes, I was excited for the move to the AL for the same reason. and really, the move is good for the Astros. it allows them to rebrand themselves and obtain real rivalries (not like StL, Cubs, Brewers, Reds ever considered Houston a true rival – geography still matters).
I think the idea is good, but the execution is key. You need to get it right if you do it that way or you’ll crater your fanbase too. It’s going to be interesting to see if the guy they took from the Cardinals is really building things up well.
the one move I didn’t like them making was getting rid of Chris Johnson. he was playing really well, team-controlled, and at a tough spot to fill (3B). of course, Zona just flipped him too, so maybe he isn’t as good as my impression of him.
Taking the over! Spring Training Optimism!!!!
on the Astros, right? this is an Astros thread, isn’t it?
🙂
It really is the perfect time for the Astros to do it. With the switch to the AL, which most fans don’t like, you’ve got a perfect time to turn things around. Winning cures everything.
I really didn’t get the local resistance to the switch. The only criticism that made sense was more late games thanks to the west coast trips. But outside of that…. MLB divisions make no sense to me. How are the Indians, Pirates, Reds, White Sox/Cubs, and Tigers not one division? Why is this hard? History, I guess.
Good ages. And to be fair, I am also enthralled at the idea of a QB that actually run the ball. I’ll probably catch the 19th or 20th game. I need to go up to Arlington for a game this season too.
That’s what this Cleveland website was missing – more Astros talk.
Alex White is on the Astros now…
Know what would be funny? Astros kick off the regular season with a win against in-state rival. It is the Sunday Night ESPN game Mar. 31. Sad part is the Stros have more Sunday night games than the Indians (we have none).
Panic would ensue in Dallas. You know, until they played game2.
Been to Arlington a couple of times and it’s pretty stale (both the park and the fans). I have heard that Arlington itself is much improved from what it was.
yes. the good thing for them is they can “truly” spend when the time is right (like the Nats). they can lockup ALL their homegrown stars while supplementing them with a few FAs.
They currently own the biggest TV deal in MLB with a HUGE equity stake in the network:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/christinasettimi/2012/03/21/baseballs-biggest-cable-deals/
In September 2010 it gave the Rangers a 20-year contract valued at $3 billion that begins in 2015. Not only does it include an average annual $80 million rights fee – triple the amount under the expiring contract – and an upfront payment in excess of $100 million, but it gives the team a 10% equity stake in Fox Sports Southwest. It was considered the league’s largest television deal.
That was until a month later when the Houston Astros and Rockets deal with Comcast was officially announced. The Astros scored a 45% stake in the new Comcast SportsNet Houston (the Rockets will own 31%) to be launched this upcoming Fall (in time for the 2012-13 NBA season kickoff), and will collect an average annual $80 million rights fee over twenty years in a deal valued at $3.2 billion – seven times the value of their expiring deal with Fox Sports
Astros fans are among the few that can understand 🙂
Cleveland, Colorado, and Houston. He just has to get to Florida and Minnesota now.
Wow. I really hope we improve more than 2 wins with all the changes that have been made.
