NFL News: Raheem Morris to interview for Browns defensive coordinator

Despite the fact that the Eagles got Chip Kelly and the Browns didn’t, the Browns are apparently moving forward trying to put a first class staff together around Rob Chudzinski. Pro Football Talk has the news that the Browns will be interviewing former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris for the opening.

Morris had a rocky ending to his tenure in Tampa as head coach, but few doubt his abilities as a defensive coach. Most recently he’s been the defensive backs coach for the Washington Redskins this past season.

As Mr. Florio points out the Browns still have Dick Jauron under contract. Oddly enough, Jauron’s name hasn’t even been mentioned anywhere so far this off-season. I didn’t really expect his name to surface in relation to the head coaching positions, but as those were filled, mostly with offensive names, I’m surprised we haven’t heard his name even once for a defensive coordinator spot in transition.

If you’re wondering about Morris’ ability to be coordinator, it might be noteworthy to find out that Morris assumed the defensive playcalling duties during the fourth quarter of a game against the Rams this season at the request of head coach Mike Shanahan following disagreements with D-coordinator Jim Haslett.

    Let’s see..

    Head coaching experience, check!
Looks like he might use both the 4-3 and 3-4 formations. Hmmm…
Only 1 good season, out of 3, as HC. Not bad. Not good either.
During his 1 good season, it looks like his defense was mediocre. Curious if that was because of poor player talent, or Morris himself?

I would say give him a shot. See what happens.

    I’m down

Player talent. He took a really bad Tampa team and had them playing well that first year.

  • SDA

The fact that Jauron has not interviewed anywhere is curious. I hope that means he may stick around.

“Despite the fact that the Eagles got Chip Kelly and the Browns didn’t,
the Browns are apparently moving forward trying to put a first class
    staff together around Rob Chudzinski.”

I don’t get the connection between the first half of that sentence and the second. It’s like saying “Despite the fact that the Eagles got Chip Kelly and the Browns didn’t,
the Browns made a deal with First Energy.”

“Despite the fact that the Eagles got Chip Kelly and the Browns didn’t,
I went to the store yesterday.”

“Despite the fact that the Eagles got Chip Kelly and the Browns didn’t,
    it rained somewhere.”

This Chip Kelly fetish is something to behold.

I think I would like this hire. He seems versatile as a coach and seems like a great motivator. If the rumors about him calling defensive schemes in the 4th quarter for the ‘skins later in the season is true, that makes me more interested. Pretty sure the Redskins’ 4th quarter defense got a lot better later in the year, but that is just based off of memory.

I like it. He helped coach some great defenses in Tampa Bay as an assistant, and his specialty is defensive backs, which happens to be an area where we have young talent that needs developed.

I also like that he doesn’t come from a 3-4 background, so we may not have a base 3-4 defense after all.

  • Robi

Was Norv as OC ever made official?

  • JK

Sooo… are we for sure getting rid of Jauron?

  • Garry_Owen

Despite the fact that the Eagles got Chip Kelly and the Browns didn’t, Kelly just handed me a chip.

  • mgbode

i went through things i just honestly don’t know if he’d be good or not. some good things, but i still remember how much he lost that 2011 Bucs team (they flat-out quit the last 6-8 games).

  • mgbode

    he’s reportedly “on vacation”

perhaps he’s staying with Lennay Kukua’s family

  • The_Real_Shamrock

What things did you go through, did you contact your people? Kidding but seriously we’re talking a job as a potential coordinator or even maybe as some sort of defensive assistant under Jauron if Jauron somehow managed to retain his position. I realize the latter is almost impossible especially since alot of talk seems to be centered on the move back to a 3-4. I really hate that possibility but it’s out of my control.

When Kelly announced he was staying at Oregon and Craig and Scott started rounding up the Four Horsemen, I went Googling and checked out the top 3 returns of Eagle blogs, the sentiment ranged from “this sucks” to “glad we didn’t get him”. Not one of the sites, nor really any of the commenters called into question Lurie’s competence, nobody was relieved that Banner didn’t “get one over on the old team”, everybody just seemed to put their big boy pants on and accept that not everything goes your way. Now I submit that it is entirely possible that Lurie clued the entire city into his and Kelly’s master plan of making the entire City of Cleveland look foolish by waiting a week and a half to sign Kelly. Disciplined bunch those Philly fans, to all be in the know of this diabolical plot to once again drag Cleveland and its hapless, feckless owner onto a national stage, prostrate the fair city and run fondue skewers through her nether regions. The contempt this entire country has for us is astounding, going so far as to send us an unending supply of the most incompetent billionaires on Gods green earth to continually screw up our Public Trust.
PS: Do not , I repeat Do not search the internet for Chip fetish. Allow me to carry the burden for all of us.

Despite the fact that the Eagles got Chip Kelly and the Browns didnt, I’m pooping right now.

  • Indeed, sir. But despite the fact that you pointed out the non-sequitur, I’m procrastinating on a “work at home” Thursday.

  • Roosevelt

This is partially because Philly has always been known for its classy fans.

are we not allowed to discuss it? take a look at whether Morris has had success in the past? i’m confused why you seem on a mission today to stop conversations. that’s why there’s a comment section.

  • Garry_Owen

Dude, did mgbode punch your grandma or something yesterday?

  • The_Real_Shamrock

First off lets not mischaracterize my comments I never said you were prohibited from commenting. I don’t think it’s physically possible to stop you from commenting on evey single subject that comes up even if someone wanted to. Second, if you read the first word in the second sentence spelled K-i-d-d-i-n-g you’d know my first sentence was meant as just giving you a hard time. Third, have a nice day!

  • The_Real_Shamrock

When I want your opinion I’ll give it to you!

But seriously my grandmother would freakin’ destroy mgbode. She’d stomp a mudhole in his candya%& and walk it dry!

  • Garry_Owen

I don’t even know what that means.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

  • Garry_Owen

Is that “angry all caps,” “sarcastic all caps,” or “trying to be funny all caps”?

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Bust a cap in yo _ _ _ is what that was! 😉

  • vega

I say no. Yeah he uses a 4-3 but its a “Tampa 2” scheme which doesn’t really fit the attacking style Chud seems to want to go with. Jauron has done a damn fine job and has all the experience to beat out Morris in my opinion.

  • MrCleaveland

HE SAID HAVE A NICE $%#%#% DAY, &$%$#@#$ IT!

  • mgbode

    i have had a nice day 🙂
