January 28, 2013To nobody’s surprise, Kyrie Irving was named the Eastern Conference’s player of the week today. Irving averaged 35 points as the Cavaliers went 3-0 beating Boston, Milwaukee and Toronto.
Kyrie didn’t just average 35 points, he was incredibly efficient in doing so. Irving was 41 of 67 (61%) from the field. He was 6 of 11 (54.5%) from behind the three point line, including the cold-blooded game winner against Toronto. He missed just 1 free throw hitting 19 of 20.
Kyrie on winning the award-
“This has been a very good week for our team,” Irving said. “We’re working hard and making progress. While I’m honored to win the award this week, the most important and exciting thing is our success as a team and continuing our focus to keep getting better every day.”
The award is Kyrie’s first. It is a nice cap to a great week which saw him named to his first all-star game and win professional athlete of the year at the Cleveland Sports Awards.
From WFNY’s Jacob Rosen earlier this week-
“But in his second season, Irving only recently qualified for the NBA per-game leaderboard by accumulating enough starts following his 11-game absence. After Friday’s performance, he now ranks sixth in the league with 24.0 points per game. In his last 20 games since Dec. 15 2 , it’s 25.0 points per game along with 48.5% shooting.
At this age, as noted previously in The Diff, Irving’s combination of production and efficiency is nearly unmatched in NBA history. The incredible guards listed as comparisons in that article are/were transcendent stars in Chris Paul, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan.”
