MLB Rumors: Indians continue to be linked to Jason Bay

Looking for bodies to plug in to their gaping holes, the Cleveland Indians continue to be linked to veteran outfielder Jason Bay. The latest comes from ESPN’s Buster Olney who states that the 34-year old is in search of “familiarity” when it comes to his future employer.

The former All-Star is coming off of a season he would likely forget if given the chance, providing a slash line of .165/.237/.299 (OPS of .536) with eight home runs and 20 runs batted in for the New York Mets. Rouhly one week ago, the Mets agreed to pay Bay $21 million as a settlement to no longer play for them going forward.

Terry Francona managed Bay in Boston from 2008-2009. Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reported last week that the British Columbia native would prefer to sign with a team on the West Coast, so it’s not a sure thing that he’ll sign with Cleveland.

So, is there a West Coast team that provides Bay with familiarity?

  • mgbode

Hey, why don’t I just go eat some hay, make things out of clay, lay by the bay? I just may! What’d ya say

  • LaundroMat

    Sounds okay.

  • AlexMathews

No! This would follow Shaponetti’s recent trend of overpaying a washed up outfielder on a one-year rental. We need someone with substance and who can actually contribute.

Please, whatever West Coast team out there that Bay is familiar with, may he go to them. I look forward to the day the Tribe gets out of their “plugging gaping holes with bodies” business model (which sounds kind of erotic, actually) to acquiring players that can have a real impact on the roster.

  • mgbode

if Bay reprises his 2012 numbers, then he can have a real impact on a roster. an extremely negative impact is still an impact, right?

  • Roosevelt

You know you’re in bad shape when you’re making mistakes the Mets wouldn’t make.

  • saggy

    no way

  • mgbode

what if we just pay Tyler Bray?

  • matt underwood

    F*ck Me

    I hate this team

  • gren

Just think Terry can use him as a leader in the locker room.

‘Look at what Jason use to be able to do.’

Dude chill. Imagine being a marlin fan today

  • nobody

At least the Marlins have won it all (twice) in my lifetime…don’t know why this had to be mentioned…

  • mgbode

They just traded the rest of their team away tonight. And I’m kinda happy about it. Hate everything Miami

  • JK

The Marlins have fans? Well I do feel bad for him I guess.

  • The only way this story gets better is if they have a joint news conference to announce the Bay signing along with resigning Sizemore.

  • architrance

I know him, and NO I don’t feel bad for him whatsoever.

  • Wheel

This is exactly the kind of signing the Indians should not make. Which means they probably will.

  • Steve

The mistake isn’t giving the guy a chance to make the roster, it’s guaranteeing him $60 million. If the Indians pay any kind of real money for him, then we can judge how bad the deal is.

  • zonk

I am imagining a team with 2 championships and probably on their way to a 3rd now that they are rebuilding again…
