Weeden: We’re Going to Turn it Around

As an athlete, even though you wish you’re going to be all up, there are going to be some downs. Fortunately for me, I’ve had games where I haven’t played as well but I felt like I had given my team a chance to win. And today, there were times where I didn’t really do that; that’s the part that gets me the most. I really take a lot of pride in giving whatever it is I’m asked of. If I throw five touchdowns and no interceptions or four interceptions and no touchdowns, I feel like I want to give my team a chance to win. It’s a long year. It’s a long season. Obviously, I don’t want anyone to remember the first one because we’e going to turn it around and play again in seven days and this one is in the past. Unfortunately, we can’t do anything about it. It stings — it’s going to sting for a few days. Part of my makeup is that I have a pretty short memory and I’m not going to let anything get to me. I’m going to continue to work, bust my tail and give this team a chance to win.

— Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden following Sunday’s 17-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Weeden threw four interceptions while completing only 16 of his  34 pass attempts, recording a passer rating of 5.1.

I don’t know what else he could say…certainly could not have been worse. Bottom line is that his turnovers cost the team the win, flat out. He’ll get better as the only direction to go is up I suppose.

Meanwhile, somewhere he just threw yet another pick…

  • He’s right about one thing … it’s a looooooooooooooooooooong year.

  • 5KMD

Let’s assume for one second that the Browns are competing for a playoff spot this year.
The crappy thing about losing that winable game is that I thin the Eagles can and will beat some of the teams in our division. It would be a +1 in terms of playoff maneuvering in the AFC north. Real bummer.

That might have been the worst QB play I have ever seen. 12-35, 118yds, 4 picks, 2 missed wide open TD’s. I hate the constant QB changes that have been cleveland MO for years but damn, that was bad. McCoy was never that bad even with a worse WR core, RB’s and O-line.

Seriously, I have already lost faith in Weeden. When has he not looked like crap yet, and WTF do they not put the dude in shot gun and at least put the guy position he is comfortable in. I dont know if I can take this much longer. Classic cleveland loss.

  • ICantTakeItAnymore

What makes you think he will get better? I must admit, I liked the pick originally and I thought he would pan out. However, I havent even seen a hint of anything resembling good QB play from him yet. Where is this strong arm? I saw him under throw the deep ball twice to Benjamin on the deep ball he is supposed to be good at. That said, he did over throw Mo Mass by about 20 yards when he was wide open early, so there was some arm strength there.

I really hope your right and I hate to admit that I have already given up on Weeden. Why oh why cant cleveland ever catch a break?

  • Hopwin

Was that English? Are we sure he didn’t get any concussions yesterday? At no point in his rambling, incoherent response was he even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.

  • NamedMyKidPrice

Why oh why cant cleveland ever catch a break???
Because of attitudes like that. One game and the sky has fallen. And you are now miserable.
Its one game. He will be better. The whole team will be better in week 2. We have 26 out of 53 possible players are in their first two years in the league. It may take a game or two for them to figure this thing out.
Im not saying the Browns will be 15-1 but lets not run everyone out of town so we can start another 5 year rebuilding plan.
BTW I just cant stand people who beg for breaks in life.

  • BomberDawg

I am wearing my McCoy jersey next week. I’m glad I kept it.

  • ICantTakeItAnymore

I dont care. That was terrible QB play and I have yet to see anything resembling good play from Weeden. I know, I know, I know its early. But that was just so terrible. So, so terrible. Even with the list of terrible QB’s the browns have started so long, that play tops it all. It was the all time worst performance of any Browns QB ever. I am sorry, and I hate to say it, but its true. He could get 1000% better and still be terrible. I hope your right, but I have seen no indications yet that you are.

Don’t forget about the stinker Jeff Garcia put up when he ended the game with 0.0 quarterback rating.

  • What’s this “we” crap? Hope you meant “I” am going to turn it around

  • I think that is part of the problem. Coaches draft a guy and don’t try him out in plays he is more comfortable in. He did suck, but it’s one game. We can’t bury him for it. I saw his Camp Gruden thing on ESPN sunday morning, and if we Holmgren hadn’t crapped the bed and at went after Gruden instead of Shurmur, we might be in a better position w/ Weeden. He needs a coach who understands the position and knows how to coach it. Don’t think Shurmur knows how to coach any positions. Defense at least looked good.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

    Sarcasm? I hope.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

No more Kool-Aid for you clearly you’ve had more then your share. Let me call u a cab.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Stop laughing Derek Anderson…Tim Couch…Colt McCoy!!!!

  • mgbode

why are you a Shady fan? not sure what he did to lose you, but he did look good yesterday.

  • 5KMD

More or less for this year, but this is always how I think for the NFL since the schedules are balanced. Obviously the divsion games are crucial. I’ve been yelling for years, nothing else matters until the Browns start having a winning record in the division.
But after that, it’s winning these games and then having that team beat the steelers and ravens and bengals.
Right now, the Browns supposedly already have a leg up on those “other” games where they play the worst in a division and the steelers/ravens/bengals play the better teams.

  • ICantTakeItAnymore

Its even worse because they hired Shurmur specifically because he was supposed to be a good coach for young QBs. At least thats what they said at the time if I recall. Sam Bradford’s rookie season was supposed to be enabled by Shurmur. He sucks as bad as Weeden did in week 1. Cough, bengals 2012 X 2, cough, cough, clock management…

  • ICantTakeItAnymore

Yes, i remember. However, Garcia wasnt a first round draft pick. Second, missed wide open guys for TD’s show up in the stats as incompletions and so dont show up in QB ratings. However, those are just as bad, if not worse, than the 4 picks that kill the QB rating because they took 14 points right off the board.

  • ICantTakeItAnymore

BTW, Weeden was 12 of 35, not 16 of 34.

  • Tsunami

I know I’m reaching here but, not all INTs are created equally. 4 INTS just sounds so completely absurd but 1 of those should have been a TD pass to little (or 1st and goal at the 2), and another one was essentially a short punt. It was third and long and he aired it out down the right sideline. It was picked off and essentially became a 38 yard punt. That’s not great, but it wasn’t horrific like the last INT. In short, he had a really bad day, but midway through the second quarter I felt like he kinda looked like a real quarterback. And then he fell apart. But, all this talk about “historically bad” seems a little ridiculous. Vick was awful as well, he has way better receivers, the Browns had to actually respect the Philly run game, and Vick could have very easily had about 3-4 more picks.

All I’m saying is, Weeden is getting singled out a little too much for this and it’s definitely too early to completely write him off. A little perspective is needed other than the box score stats.

  • NamedMyKidPrice

You are right. If the kool aid was give someone more than one game to decide their fate flavor. And im not on here banging the Weeden is the answer drum. Im just saying we have talent and it is young so lets not run a bunch of young guys out of town just to have them replaced with another bunch so we can say the sky is falling then as well.

  • TSR3000

It’s not so much the picks for me but the missed TDs. I expected some picks, but thought he would make those big throws that Colt can’t.

  • Paul Jackson

That’s why when Hasslem officially takes over as new owner. Nobody will be safe including Weeden, Maybe the change that is coming will be better for the fans, or maybe you enjoy losing season after losing season.
