Shurmur: Brandon Weeden is “Very Ready”

I think [Brandon Weeden] is very prepared. I think he’s had an outstanding camp. I thought he had an outstanding offseason. Really he’s kind of improved every day. For a guy that’s going through this for the first time as a pro, I think he’s very ready.

— Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, Tuesday, after announcing that Weeden would not be suiting up for the team’s preseason finale this Thursday. Through three preseason contests, Weeden is 24-of-49 for 297 yards, zero touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 59.7. He was the victim of four sacks, three of which resulted in a fumble.

    Blah blah blah.

Sounds like Coach is doing a little pre-emptive butt covering in case B-Weeds flames out in the opener. It won’t work.

If you coach scared, you play scared.

If he believes that Weeden is ready for the Eagles based on the recent performance against the Eagles then he’s either delusional or blind.

  • There is not a single person on this team who’s earned the right to completely sit out this last preseason game based on performance in the previous three. Starters need one quarter minimum. If our coaches aren’t convinced that the o-line can keep Weeden injury-free in a glorified scrimmage, then we have far bigger issues.

Besides his ball security, I thought he played pretty well. It was nice to see some strong, accurate passes on the first drive before the O Line fell asleep.

Shurmurs is the smartest coach in the league. He’s totally rope a doping the Eagles. No way could a team of professionals play so poorly otherwise. Right?…..RIGHT!?!?!?

    “kind of improved every day”
I’ll take it!!!! Indeed, I’m going to tell my boss the same thing in my next review. “Look, I know I’m not doing all that well, and in fact really screwed up that one case, but I’ve kind of improved every day. I’m ready for more responsibility.”
The funny thing is, I don’t even dislike Shurmur, and don’t entirely disagree with his decision to sit Weeden this week – but that quotation is just too hard to pass over with the snark.

ok, i’ll be the first to mention Mirabelli’s “promotion” with the Indians 🙂

Shunur if you thing weeden is ready as a starter in the nfl, you must be on crack. the only thing he has showen is he is the biggest bust. all of cleveland playes need a lot of work.

  • What is he ready for more fumbles? Come opening day I think he is really going to see the Eagles pass rush…I hope he don’t get hurt…

    Ben to Shumur: Oh, really?

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Not since the likes of Vince Lombardi has there been a head coach as inspiring as Pat Shurmur!

Unlike some of these other commenters I do think that Weeden has looked good and has shown progress. That being said, as a rookie any reps help, and I would have liked to have seen him get a few drives in against Chicago. I don’t think that performance in a fourth preseason game is really going to show the coaches something they don’t already know in trying to decide between McCoy and Wallace as the backup.

  • Kildawg

Maybe the plan is to have Weeden continue to gameplan vs the Egos with the scheduling SNAFU. Here’s hoping we don’t look FUBAR this year…

  • Garry_Owen

    ^ This. Awesome.

They shouldn’t let county workers websurf on taxpayer time.

Shut it down, boys, there’s your winner. I’ve got nothing – NOTHING – after that..

Shurmurmurmurmurmurmurmurmurmurmurmurmurmurmurmur! Soon to be in the unemployment line, because no other NFL team is going to give him a job! If his evaluation is that Weeden is ready and he’s still not sure if McCoy is even the 2nd best QB, then his ability to evaluate talent is unbelievably horrendous! And is “penalty-every-other-play” Cousins still on this team? On the plays he is not penalized, he totally misses his blocks and will get some QB killed before he’s done. Again, no other NFL team wants him. Anyone would be better than he is!

  • mgbode

“Anyone would be better than he is!”

ok put me in coach, i’m ready to play. i’m a lot undersized, out of shape, and not all that skilled, but hey, at least I’m not Cousins 🙂
