What We’re Watching: Eagles at Browns
August 24, 2012Paul Dolan Changes: Not Coming Soon
August 24, 2012Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.com is reporting what we’ve all known for a while, but the Indians are finally admittting-
“The Indians, resigned to the idea that they won’t be able to sign star outfielder Shin-Soo Choo to a contract extension, will listen again to trade offers for Choo this winter.
Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said they have tried to extend Choo “multiple times” over the past few years, to no avail. Antonetti was asked how much reception he’s gotten to the possibility of a multiyear deal, and the GM answered candidly, “None.”
And what will the Indians get for Choo? If history repeats itself, not much.

I could see him in NY
I hear that Todd Van Poppel kid is going to be a real stud. Ben McDonald too. They should see if they can trade for those guys
Move him for pitching, pitching, pitching.
especially if the NYY decide to pass on re-signing Swisher
Scary to think what they’ll actually take for him based on the Indians past histories of trades. We’ll never know but I’d be curious if the Indians received ANY offers or engaged in ANY discussions about Choo at the deadline. Hopefully they make this count if it becomes a reality.
I hate Scott Boras.
Borases don’t kill small market teams. Players do.
Of course they will! Stick with the ol’ “don’t spend any money” mentality. Won’t it be fun to have problems in left AND right field next year. This ownership reminds me of the ownership in the movie “major league”.
Awful…
Yeah, but he dirsn’t help.
Sorry, on my phone. “Doesn’t help.”
Yankees farm system is a mess. Banuelos was shut down early, Pineda shut down, and really no great hitting prospects.
Pineda, Banuelos, and Mason. all high risk, high reward guys. would need to augment those guys with another lower risk guy and maybe throw them back a guy like Gomez.
Unfortunately this doesn’t eliminate the Yankees as a possibility. I’m trying to think of the teams who could use a RF like Choo and who they might have of interest to the Indians. Teams rich in pitching would be high on the list.
Wow, guess I haven’t been paying attention to MLB lately.
Congrats to Choo on his Cy Young award.
Both are projected behind Andy Marte from what I read
we already had ben mcdonald once… however, in this case we actually found out he was damaged goods BEFORE the trade was finalized.
I would take those 3 guys for Choo.
Not only does a team need to need an OFer, but they also have to be fairly certain they will be able to pay him (or really willing to give it up for a rental shot).
I’d think the teams to target would be (without looking at all their prospect lists):
Giants (plenty of pitching in the pipeline too)
Dodgers
Pirates (only a rental likely if they get him though)
Braves (though budget conscious too)
I don’t think there is any quite as obvious match in the AL (Rangers maybe?) but you always have to check with the Ms just to make sure 🙂
Why? Players tell agents what to do, not the other way around. Any player who signs Boras for his agent is telling the world that he has no interest in anything but the biggest contract possible. Boras is just doing what he’s asked to do. Don’t be mad that he does it so well.
Maybe you missed the part where they said the Indians tried to negotiate a contract and Choo had no interest.
Looking at this, the Giants look like a serious fit for Choo. Spacious home park where Choo’s arm becomes extremely valuable, and Giants on west coast – closer to home for Choo. The fact that the Giants are deep in pitching prospects gives me goose-bumps.
I’d guarantee there were offers and discussions. Especially from the Pirates.
I totally forgot we had Ben McDonald. Good call
Good. Choo is decent but so overrated. Choo does not change enough outcomes go games. Sure hell get his decent stats but it doesn’t amount to wins or play off appearances. Get what you can! Trade AC too if he’s not part of the future.
Yea I’m sure they did just curious as to what the discussions were about is all. Where I’m headed is I’d hate to hear, after Choo is eventually traded, that the Indians could have received more at the trade deadline but chose not to make a trade because they felt they could make the playoffs. This would seem perfectly logical given the timeline I just don’t want to hear it used as an excuse for why they didn’t get a better deal for Choo. I’m projecting, I’m forecasting, I’m Nostradamusing because I can hear the Tribe speak already when they finally move or giveaway Choo.
I don’t know, the trade deadline was at game 5 or 6 of the first losing streak and the games were to the Royals and Twins. It’s possible of course that the offers would be higher then than in the offseason, but we should be about equal either way.
Use the Hunter Pence trade as the baseline in comparisons of value (have to factor in mitigating things of course).
not to mention that they just lost a slugging OFer who will be a FA in Melky. would be nice for things to work out in our favor for once.
oh, and if the Dodgers land Adrian Gonzalez? the Giants have to keep pace, no?
how is Choo overrated? he plays good defense, puts up the best offensive numbers on the team. you cannot put this season on Choo in any way shape or form.
now, is it smart to trade Choo because we likely need more than next season to get back into contention? yes, I think it is. but, that doesn’t mean Choo is overrated.
Dude I’m trying to catch you in number of posts will you please stop responding to mine! ;p
He’s way overrated. Look at their records every year with Choo. His offensive numbers are rather above average. He’s the Indians version of Howie Kendrick. As someone who lived in Cali and watched the angels for years he has decent numbers but rarely changes games. What the hell has choo done to help win through two massive losing streaks. Empty stats my friend
I apologize that Choo didn’t step onto the mound and pitch.
No interest because it’s not enough money that’s being offered…
