Zeller, Sloan Headline Cavs First Summer League Win
July 17, 2012Butch Davis doesn’t think he’s done being a head coach
July 17, 2012Justin Masterson was a guest on MLB Network’s The Rundown yesterday. Here is the video from the show-
Highlights-
Justin Masterson on why the team can stay in the race this season:
“What’s great about this year is we haven’t really been playing our best baseball, but we’ve been able to stay at least close to the top. We’ve been up and down, but we’ve been consistent and I think that’s what’s helped us out a lot.”
Masterson on how close the team is to playing their best baseball:
“Some days we’re doing pretty good and other days we’re not. I think we’re on an upward trend. I think we have a nice, young team that has a lot of energy and love to play the game, love to be at the ballpark, love to be together. We’re slowly growing together and figuring out what makes us such a great team. I think that’s why we’re all excited to go into the second half and kind of lay it all out and say, ‘Hey, we know what it’s like to be in first place for a long time last year. Let’s be there at the end this year.’”
Masterson on his relationship with Derek Lowe:
“I always joke with him because when I first got drafted by the Red Sox, they were like, ‘Oh, it’s the next Derek Lowe.’ We do both throw sinker balls and we’re both about the same height, but aside from that, [we’re different]. He’s a short-armer, I got a long arm. But it’s just great to have the guy. He’s one of the best guys in the game, fun to talk to, fun to have around. [He] just brings a great attitude, not just on how to throw a sinker, but just how to approach the game when things are going well and when things aren’t going well.”
Masterson on getting left-handed hitters out:
“A lot of it is the ability for me to control the strike zone. When I’m able to mix and match my pitches in the zone, I’m good. When it happens that I’m throwing a few more balls and get behind in the count, it’s just natural [that] left-handers see right-handers a little better, especially me coming a little bit more from the side, so they get a few more hits.”
Masterson on the bullpen:
“I’m very confident in all of them. It’s one of the best bullpens. They’ve done a great job over the last three years. It’s pretty incredible the way that they can go out each year and be that good…When you hand the ball over, you know they’re gonna to keep it close.”

While it’s a somewhat reasonable thing to say at the beginning of the year, I’m getting fed up with constantly hearing this, “We haven’t played our best baseball, yet” crap. What the heck does that even mean? It is just going to happen one day, all of a sudden, by chance? Or, are they expecting the mythical baseball fairies to visit the ballpark and sprinkle magic dust on them, thus making each guy simultaneously play their “best”?
Ugh.

“We’ve been up and down, but we’ve been consistent”
Umm, Mr. Masterson. Can you please explain this statement?
