WFNY Wednesday Wahoos: Indians Minor League Weekly Review 7/18
July 18, 2012Indians Awarded 2nd-Round Pick in Competitive Balance Lottery
July 18, 2012According to NBA sources, the Cleveland Cavaliers are once again thought to be involved in a potential Dwight Howard trade. This time, the Cavaliers would theoretically be landing Lakers big man Andrew Bynum.
According to ESPN.com’s Ric Bucher:
The Cavaliers would land Lakers center Andrew Bynum for a package of draft picks and veteran power forward Anderson Varejao, according to one league source. The Lakers would receive Howard for Bynum. Orlando would get Varejao and draft picks. The source said this was merely the framework of a deal being discussed.
Obviously we’ve heard rumors like this before, so this isn’t exactly new territory being covered. But for what it’s worth, it sounds like there’s some smoke to this fire. Which, of course, means nothing is probably going to happen.
For the Cavaliers, though, it’s a chance to pair a top 5 PG in Kyrie with a top 2 center in Bynum. It’s a core that you have to believe you can build around and, frankly, gives you 2/3s of your own Big 3. It’s a risky trade for Cleveland and it throws a wrench in the rebuilding plan, but it’s probably a risk that makes too much sense to pass on for Cleveland.
Again, assuming these rumors are true.

Lakers get: Dwight Howard, Jason Richardson
Cavs get: Andrew Bynum, Chris Duhon, Glenn Davis
Magic get: Anderson Varejao, Luke Walton, Andrew Goudelock, 2013 Cavs 1st, 2013 Heat/Lakers 1st, 2013 Magic 2nd, 2013 Magic 2nd, 2015 Heat 1st
Who Say’s No? Remember our picks will most likely be anywhere from 18-26 with the best Center in the East, and the Laker, Heat picks will be even closer to 30, sweeten the pot a little bit giving back their own seconds and there you have it… Blockbuster.
I don’t really see that big of a risk, seems like a no brainer.
The risk is that Bynum can walk after this season, and the Cavs would be stuck with no Bynum and no draft picks.
I would love this move, especially if TT isn’t included in the deal this time around!!! Hopefully the Orlando FO has given up hope of keeping Dwight and will pull the trigger. Do it!
Agreed. This is only a no-brainer if they have Bynum say on camera that he will light up Cleveland like Vegas and …….er, nope. Nevermind.
Sam Amico just reported a source close to situation said: Andrew Bynum loves coach Scott and Kyrie.
Add that to the fact we can offer him 25 million more on an extension, no way he walks. Ask the nets how the risk for D-will paid off. There is really no risk, swing for the fences Chris Grant.
I have no clue why I’m the only one all in on this. We live in a world where Roy Hibbert and Brook Lopez are getting max deals, Roy hibbert and Brook Lopez! We have a chance to get at worst the 3rd best center in the NBA at 24 who has shown legitimate interest in your franchise, a franchise that nobody ever expresses interest to play for, lol. I don’t get it, you do it 6 days a week and twice on sunday.
Get Bynum to agree to a long term deal and bye bye Andy.
If Bynum is 3rd best, who’s 2nd best?
Anyway, you’re not the only one. I’m 1000000% in on this. I don’t know how you say no to it. But as the author of this article, it’s my responsibility to point out that it’s not a risk-free move because, well, it’s not. The Cavaliers stand to lose a lot if Bynum walks. But I think it’s a risk you have to take.
are you sure TT isn’t involved in this? seems like Orlando is getting the short end of the stick, big time.
Wouldn’t the Magic rather have TT than Andy? Younger and cheaper. Plus I’d rather have Andy if the Cavs are accelerating the rebuilding. Bynum’s knees scare me, especially with Cavs history.
I’m sorry, but you can’t say there’s “no way” he walks. What if Dallas offers him a max deal and he decides that, while he likes Cleveland and all, he just would prefer to live in Dallas. It could happen.
I’d still do the deal and take the gamble. But we might as well be honest about the risk factor. We hope he would stay, especially for the reasons you point out. But it’s not a guarantee.
the hope is that KI’s jersey roots will be a positive for Drew, not to mention Byron Scott’s Laker roots.. and Bynum isn’t a big-city flashy guy, so he may like the laid back atmosphere of Cleve..
I said at worst 3rd, I think he is 2nd without question and is closer to D12 than people think. If it was based on just offensive repertoire the edge goes to Bynum by a lot. I understand what you have to do, it just shocks me there are actual fans who don’t want this to happen.
Don’t you mean.. especially with Cleveland’s history?
I agree there is a risk but its smaller than most people think. I don’t know anybody that would turn down 25 million. Why leave Kyrie and B-Scott for an aging Dirk?
I agree. When healthy and motivated, Bynum is VERY close to Howard. The odds of the Cavaliers ever getting a center as good as Bynum are slim. Beyond slim.
Count me in! This would be ridiculous! Hopefully D12 gets his head out of his arse and agrees to re-up with the Lakers.
Give the Magic Gibson’s non-guaranteed deal instead of Waltons and that is a potential one. Though I think we end up with Richardson and the Lakers Duhon (will the Lakers really get Dwight and Richardson for Bynum and Goudelock)
The Magic “get” their own picks (2013 Magic 2nd, 2014 Magic 2nd)? How does that make sense?
Hennigen has supposedly loved Andy since his OKC days. He thinks Andy is a starting caliber center with a team friendly contract who can start until the reinforcements arrive in a couple years.
the only arguments that could be made would be Horford or Al Jefferson. but those arguments would be thin.
we own the rights to those picks (that we got from the Magic)
Even if Bynum were to walk, we’d still have Kyrie, Zeller, TT and Dion….pretty much what we’d have in 2 years anyways
he could call our bluff and say sign-n-trade and get something for me or i’ll walk and you get nothing. could we let him walk?
also, I love Cleveland, but Cleveland isn’t Brooklyn. and that seems to matter alot to NBA players. significant risk which is why it’s being reported we want that extension.
all that said, I’m pretty much all-in on this trade. I want some assurances that he’ll re-sign, but I think I make the trade anyway.
I mean, we have 6 1st round picks in the next 3 years. So, if we lose 3 1st round picks then we’re just on an even playing field with everyone else 🙂
Bynum is odd and doesn’t seem to care, he is in one of the biggest markets right now and doesn’t seem to enjoy it like say Kobe. If it comes to that you play poker and say no sign and trade we’ll keep your 25 million. Can’t play scared in the NBA where every team is making super teams, do you want to win titles or be Indiana.
3 first rounders, 2 seconds, cap relief for a guy that is 100% gone at the end of the season. That is a far better deal then we go for Lebron. Way to much to risk unless Bynum is signed for 4 more years. If we are trying to compete this year with Bynum added then we need to keep Andy. The remaining draft picks are still to rich.
It’s a no brainer because it actually gives some legitimacy to the team. We automatically become a playoff team, maybe not a deep playoff team, but a playoff team. Then the following year, you bring in a final piece, and by then KI and TT, as well as Waiters have another year under their belt. 2013-2014 would look really strong for a finals push, as long as Bynum re-signs. It gives me chills just to think about it! :-)))
Finally! A man of reason!
And we keep the Sac pick? Awesome!
I don’t know if I 100% do this if Bynum doesn’t agree to resign. If he doesn’t, and ends up leaving, then you’ve backed yourself into a corner where you have a good season so you have higher draft picks, we’ve given away a bunch of 1st rounders and we are left without a way to get a good young player to pair with KI. In that scenario, does he leave for greener pastures where he doesn’t have to do it all? I think the Cavs have a plan to suck (tank) this year, have another high draft pick and really build something the way OKC has. I worry about throwing away the next 5 years of basketball AND losing KI because we gambled on 1 year of Bynum. That said, if Bynum wants to be here, you do this in a nanosecond.
Cavs need to get this done. As i said the other day, this would be a monumental step forward. Love Andy, but it’s time to go. And the pick are just that, picks. You have a known commodity in Bynum, and at only 24! Get this done and oh man what a bright IMMEDIATE future. As for the extension, don’t let that be a deal breaker. Get him in and work on that asap. BUT get him here first, while you can.
yeah, i put it in the other reply. i think i do this trade anyway and try to work it out (after talking with Bynum or having Irving talk to him to at least know he’ll want to be here, which it sounds like he does).
legitimate concerns about this destroying the team moving forward (and potentially losing Irving), but also legitimate hope this makes us a powerhouse.
I’ll wait until Chris Grant announces that the trade goes through before celebrating Bynum’s unity with the Cavs. On another subject, I should also study hype. Basically I’m curious as to why people want to talk about a trade that may or may not happen. Plus state trade senarios that the fans have no control over. Hmm….
The Cavs would never do this deal without Bynum agreeing to an extension, it would be ludicrous.
I think in a deal like this, the team in Orlando’s position is most always going to get the least, especially if Howard is unwilling to sign an extension in LA. They could also just hold on to him and get nothing when he leaves next summer, so the incentive is to get SOMETHING in a trade.
it’s discussed because it’s being put out there by those who supposedly have sources with the teams.
as to why we discuss potential trades, we have enough knowledge to know some of the possibilities, so we debate which ones would be best. helps form an opinion rather than just get caught up in the “hype” of what happens post-trade.
plus, it’s mid-July. we either talk about this potential trade, the Indians struggling, or whether Weeden should get a 4th year guaranteed.
Yep. That’s the rumor I’m waiting on – will Bynum sign here.
well, we’ve heard the line that the player surely will re-sign because players don’t turn down more money and player loves the (fill in blank) here. Those draft picks are tools to get good players to induce Kyrie to stay, so I don’t give them away for a possible one and done.
But more importantly, I don’t think Grant will do that without an extension, he seems too concerned about the long-term development. But what do I know, I wrote there was no way he’d use #4 to pick a guy he never worked out.
I don’t trust sources unless there is a name behind the source that I can trace back to someone who works within the Cavs organization. I mean I could be one of those “sources”. All I have to do is change my name, produce realistic provisions, and give people a convincing story that I work for the Cavs, and the fans would be all over me like white on rice. I can’t remember now, but there was one trade rumor going around that I was very interested in. It never occurred. Worse, one Cavs official stated that they never even talked to the other team about it. Sad Panda! Now I wait until a trade goes through. No reason to get bummed out and blame the Cavs about it.
Involving trades, I practically have very little interest in them due to so many people making one-sided trades. I like a more reasonable approach. Take Kekoa’s trade senario for example. remove a few of those draft picks, or remove Varejao, and then you got an offer that I can give to others. In my mind, Bynum is a high risk, high reward player(may not resign, career ending injury, incompatible with Byron Scott’s system, etc…). So I would try to use a low risk offer for Bynum, instead of one that also throws the kitchen sink with it, that’s all.
Shootyhoops rumors, oh the joy.
in serious matters, I agree that having “sources” is pretty hokey. but, we’re talking about a trade rumor that does nothing but add some interesting dialogue in these comments when there isn’t much to talk about. i’m okay with that.
if people make one-sided trades and we are the recipient of the good end, then shouldn’t we be looking for more?
and, Houston will gladly take our spot at the table. the reason we have first dibs is because Grant has acquired a ton of future assets. but, we’re not the only team in line.
I would. its a risk, but worth taking. Bynum is much less likely to walk from $25 million than was the case w/ LB.
And when asked about being a career laker, he said: “there’s a bank in every city” so I dont think being a the beach w/ friends is vital to him.
I would take the risk, solely based when asked about being a career laker, he said: “there’s a bank in every city” so I dont think being a the beach w/ friends is vital to him.
i just want to keep repeating this quote, as reason he will not walk: bynum said he doesnt need to be a laker for life, because “there’s a bank in every city”
One additional note.
If completed (i’ll still put it in the less than likely pile), then this trade would do a couple fun things.
1. it would create a Lakers team that is at least on par with the Heat talent-wise.
2. it would create a Cavs team that would likely be the 2nd best team in the East. at the very least, it’s one more team for the Heat to have to get through (and it’s us – double the fun at the ‘Q’).
with the Bulls(Rose), Hawks(tearing down), Magic(losing Dwight), and Celtics (lost Ray Allen and Garnett’s knees are shaky) all looking to be down next year, the East is looking bad. the Pacers are a nice, tough team, but that’s it (no, I don’t think the Nets as constructed are a real contender – they’ll win some games, be fun to watch, but that’s it)
Did he really say that? haha for some reason I love that honesty.

I actually didn’t realize how many teams in the East went down a notch but I don’t think completing this trade makes the Cavs the 2nd best team in the East just yet. We don’t even know who Waiters and TT are yet.
