Box Score: Indians 4, Yankees 6
June 27, 2012Letterman to LeBron: “Now that you’ve gotten this out of your system, you ready to go back to Cleveland and play some ball?”
June 27, 2012In the seventh inning of last night’s game, Tribe third baseman Jack Hannahan hit a foul ball into the seats on the third base side. Yankees left fielder Dewayne Wise leaped into the stands and got leather on the ball, but did not make the catch. That didn’t stop umpire Mike DiMuro from calling it a catch however.
Hannahan would be tossed later in the game for arguing the call. A call which DiMuro would later admit was a mistake–
“Mike DiMuro: “Now that I see the tape it’s obvious that the ball fell out…In hindsight I should have asked him to show me the ball…”
Yes. Seeing the ball in the mitt of Wise would have been appropriate. Especially with a Yankee fan proudly holding the ball in question up in the air a few feet from Wise.

The guy in the stands showed you the ball right away. Since when do umps make calls before seeing the player actually came up with the ball? If a player is diving in the field they dont call out before they hit the ground? The ball was out of his glove before he fell into the stands.
I was watching it live on my phone without sound, and usually when someone makes a tough catch they bounce up right away and SHOW THE BALL. I was confused because they fan SHOWED THE BALL and then the players started running into the dugout. When things aren’t going your way…
Oh, and it was a yankee fan that showed the ball? If so, those have to be some of the dumbest fans wearing red to the game when playing the indians. That is like a browns fan wearing black and pee yellow colored clothes when the Browns are playing the stoolers.
I’m completely floored by this. How do you make the call WITHOUT SEEING THE BALL? Honestly, and I know this is going to sound ridiculously homer-ish, but as egregious an error as that was, they should restart the game from that point.
…Ok maybe not, but this isn’t like ruling a trap a catch because you didn’t see the bounce. There was CONCRETE evidence – not only the fan holding the ball, but the EMPTY mitt! I hope the umpire in questioned is punished, especially since Jackie got tossed from the game for it to boot.
Ahhh….good ol’ Yankee Stadium, where not only the players are paid well but so are the umpires.
