When Pat Shurmur spoke to the media today, he didn’t name a starting quarterback, but he spoke about the desire to name a starter “sooner rather than later.” Will Burge from ESPNCleveland points out on his twitter that Shurmur said it not once but three separate times. That’s good news for those fans that want to do everything possible to avoid quarterback controversy.
Still, as of yesterday, Shurmur’s quotes were doing pretty well not to tip his hand even though pretty much everyone on earth assumes Brandon Weeden will be named.
(On his philosophy of giving Brandon Weeden the offense)- “I think philosophically you install the offense for all of the players and the benefit of the way we are doing it now is you are getting a chance to install it, add to it and then go back and repeat it. I think he is like every other player on offense. There are things he has to learn and the more he hears it, the better he will get.”
It is difficult to say whether Shurmur’s goal is more about making it seem like there is a fair competition so he doesn’t paint himself into a corner. There is always a small chance that once we get to pre-season games Brandon Weeden will look woefully lost or that Colt McCoy will look experienced. Either that, or his philosophy might be that he has to make Weeden earn it a little bit before being anointed.
Either way, I don’t know many in the media or fan base that are wondering who tops the depth chart right now.
