June 12, 2012While We’re Waiting… Ferry in Philly, Kipnis’ stance and get on the Cribbs bus
June 13, 2012Perhaps a year later than many fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Ohio State Buckeyes would prefer, but Cleveland native David Lighty will try out for the Wine and Gold on June 28th with hopes of providing a much-needed scoring punch from the shooting guard position.
Per The Plain Dealer’s Mary Schmitt Boyer, the stop in Cleveland is one of several that the swingman has planned, but playing for the Cavaliers would be the 24-year-old’s ultimate goal.
“That’s one of my goals — to get [my mom, Emily] to see me play more,” said Lighty.
Having spent last season in Italy after not being drafted following his senior season at Ohio State, Lighty averaged 7.5 points and 15.3 minutes in eight games with Bennet Cantu, later averaging 10.7 points and 30.9 minutes in 23 games with Vanoli. The move was sparked by the desire to achieve more playing time. In the NBA, Lighty’s playing time would likely descend, but the shooting guard does have outstanding offers in Europe in the event he does not latch to a stateside franchise.
Attending Cleveland’s Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, Lighty was named Player of the Year during his senior season in 2005. As a senior at Ohio State, Lighty averaged 12.1 points per game, hitting 42.9 percent of his three-point attempts.

No downside to this. Get him on the Summer League team and let him show whether or not he has enough to make it in the NBA.
Would prefer Danny Green…
I agree though I’m not expecting he makes the final roster.
He will play in the NBA this year he’s too good not to, hopefully it will be with the cavs we could use him soo much.
His defense alone makes him worthy of an NBA roster spot. Great locker room guy as well. Couldn’t believe he went undrafted.
Clearly you’re joking.. lol.
I know.. .I thought we’d get him last round or even make an offer are the draft.
44% 3pt shooter on 3.5 3pt attempts/game (full 66 games) for SA Spurs last season. 9.1pts/3.5rbs/0.9stls/0.7blks in 23min/game.
Yes, alot of that has to do with the Spurs system rewarding wing players who can hit the corner and elbow 3pter (which Green proved he could do). But, he has at least proven it over the course of a NBA season, while Lighty was in Italy.
I thoroughly enjoyed Lighty’s time with the Bucks and hope he can achieve his dream of playing in the NBA. But, at this time, it seems unlikely he’ll be better than Mr. Green.
WS/48 is an advanced metric showing how they did on the floor per minute. Danny Green had a .148, which was better than all Cavaliers (including Kyrie – .125).
PER for Danny Green was 15.5 (15 is league average). Would have been 5th on last year’s Cavs team.
Yeah… he was ok… but all people remember is the last performance…and that was the OKC series.
I don’t get included in “people” then? There were games in SA’s season before the OKC series. I promise I am not lying about that 🙂
David Lighty was a heck of a shooter at Ohio State and in a league that loves shooters he could work out nicely. I wish him luck! Always good having somebody who can hit the 3 coming off the bench for scoring bunch!
Even more than his Bball skills, he is a good person who doesn’t get involved in the BS.
Go Buckeyes and Cavs!!!! I hope this works out for both Lighty and the Cavs because I would love to root for him again.
Do we honestly need him? Or are Clevelanders just trying to help clevelanders?
do we really need a good solid 3pt threat? really? and whats not to like about clevelanders helping clevelanders?
If Lighty comes to his home town he is going to lite them beyond the three point line Go Cavs Go Buckeyes can’t possibly wait to see this guy in the Whine and Gold
