June 27, 2012Yankees 6, Indians 4: It Wasn’t That Close
June 27, 2012During an interview with Boston’s NESN, former Cleveland Indians shortstop Omar Vizquel says that he will retire following the 2012 MLB season.
“This will be my last year,” the 45-year-old Vizquel said in Spanish. “I’ve enjoyed this game a lot, but I think it’s time to pursue a new career as a coach or manager, and hopefully I’ll get that opportunity in the future.”
The Hall of Fame hopeful has 24 seasons on his resume, each filled with dazzling glove work (an 11-time Gold Glove winner) and a fan-favorite smile. Breaking ground with the Seattle Mariners in 1989, Vizquel landed in Cleveland where he would go on to help the Indians reach the World Series in both 1995 and 1997. During his 11 years with the team, Vizquel batted .283 with 288 doubles, 39 triples and 279 stolen bases.
With regard to his future beyond the major leagues, Vizquel says that he plans on heading home to Venezuela will he will help coach winter baseball.

CLASS ACT!!! Best defensive SS ever! Thanks for the memories!
If the Tribe had any brains, they would acquire Omar for the last month of the season, especially if they’re out of contention and attendance is falling.
Not like we have never done this before (Lofton, Thome)
He probably has had the same glove his whole career, and it still looks brand new.
I’m hoping Cleveland does one of those deals where they sign him for one day so he can retire a Cleveland Indian.
Any doubt that Omar ends up in Cooperstown?
And were it not for the vastly overrated defense of Jeter (not to mention the uniform he wears), Vizquel would have had even more Gold Gloves. Best I’ve ever seen defensively at SS, not to mention a heck of a nice guy.
Jaffe doesn’t think so. The comments after the article are interesting. I say he should.

Lofton was a legit piece to help us through the postseason. I get your point though.
Come back home Omar!!
