2012 NBA Draft: Cavs Make Official Offer for No. 2 Pick
June 28, 2012Sources: Dallas pick Tyler Zeller headed to Cavaliers
June 28, 2012With the fourth pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Syracuse shooting guard Dion Waiters.
Having made a play for the second-overall pick prior to the draft, the Cavaliers were relegated to staying in their lottery-given spot and addressed a considerable weakness in their roster.
A dynamic scorer and relentless when driving to the rim, the 6-foot-4-inch Waiters averaged 12.6 points and 2.5 rebounds during the 2011-12 NCAA season. He possesses a style of play that is drawing comparisons to Miami Heat shooting guard Dwyane Wade including but not limited to his ability to play point guard if needed.
Waiters was the second-ranked shooting guard on the WFNY Not-So-Big Board, falling right behind Florida’s Bradley Beal who was drafted third-overall by the Washington Wizards.

Let’s Go NETS!!!
In before Chris Grant is fired posts
WOMP…
See you in the lottery… same time same place 2013.
I’m shocked
I am completely baffled as to how the Cavaliers even managed to screw this pick up… Wow.
If his shot is better than advertised, we’ll have a good backcourt. But if it takes him time to spread the floor, we’ll have teams packing it in on us with Kyrie Dion & Gee all drivers and TT & Andy having no range.
Surprised myself but I guess Grant really wanted that SG once Beal was gone Waiters was it. I think #4 was high myself but we’ll see what happens. I figured Barnes was the guy once MKG and Beal were taken. I’m hoping there is a trade up for the next choice.
I’m trying to remember how angry I was when the Browns took Weeden and how the pick looked a little better the next day and at the end of the week.
But, wow, it’s pretty tough not to hate this pick…
Indeed
huge bummer.
is ESPN trying to set the record for awkward interviews?
dafaq….
This was a “crap MKG is gone, Beal is gone….we don’t like Barnes…..CRAP – PANIC PANIC PANIC”
For better or worse, Grant lives and dies by this pick.
We were stuck at #4. Woulda taken Barnes.
Just because the Cavs didn’t listen to you doesn’t mean they screw this pick up
he must have been really unimpressive to fall this far
Gonna be more “woe is me” posts then there was in the entire pre-draft articles. Welcome to Cleveland Dion, lol.
You statement is laughable. I doubt Chris Grant will lose any sleep over this pick. Especially if Dion Waiters ends up being very good for us.
I doubt it was a panic. I am sure the Cavs were well prepared for this specific scenario.
I like Dion Waiters but they have now reached 2 years in a row. I don’t like they way they are going about their team building. Would you rather have klay thompson and T-Rob or Waiters and TT. I do like Waiters but they picked him because of an error they made last year. So they are just magnifying their mistake. They are just trying to pick needles out of a haystack rather than actually have a plan for team building. Gilbert stinks for all these years thinking Grant and Ferry have any idea how to put together a team through the draft which is what you have to do when you are in the hole we are in. They pass on a sure thing to pick some reach pick to look like geniuses or something. I will say that I do like Waiters as a player and reminds me a little of Vinnie “the microwave” johnson. Hopefully he is good but the reach for TT just made these exec idiots pass on a star potential player. If they take T-Rob they can still trade Varejo later in the draft. They will go now with some big man bust at #24 now. They are the type of people that know nothing about basketball but think they do.
No need to continue to ask Robinson about his family tragedies. He knows it happened, and we know it too. Absolutely no need to bring it up during his interview.
could have traded back and got the same dude. is it fact that he didn’t work out for us and we didnt have him in for an interview..? alleged head case. smallish SG. (face palm x100)
It’s only a reach if he was low on other draft boards. We don’t know that…

I love this pick. Imho Davis, Waiters, Barnes and lilliard were the best players in the draft.
I like you’re “if it works, everything is super!” attitude…very realistic.
Sigh. Here we go again. You cant trade unless you have a trade partner. We dont kniw what offers there were.
I’m pretty sure they were prepared, but they didn’t want this. I haven’t clocked it, but it felt like the longest wait between picks so far.
which really…is probably best(?)
Here’s comes the trade…AV and Waiters to GS for Barnes, players and picks.
Not just me, but a whole lot of people who know a lot more than me. I don’t see the logic in picking a guy like Dion Waiters with the fourth pick. Barnes or Robinson both would have made a lot more sense, to met at least.
I’ll bet u lunch, that your trade doesn’t happen.
HEY!!!
Why didn’t they just go with T-Rob? Jamison’s gone. Bobcats screwed Cavs and themselves. They’ll have the same picks next year
Question, does your people know as much as the Cavs organization? I think they may have found somthing in Dion’s game that everyone else completely missed.
In 2 years he will probably lose his job over it though.
I doubt that. Where else are you going to find a better GM?
Why, thank you.
Everyone has got to chill. The front office knows what their doing. How many people had TT last year at 4. Turned out pretty well. Noone knows anything until these kids get on the basketball court.
Yikes. Don’t know about this one…Waiters can score, yes…but he is sort of small and I think Barnes was the better player, or Beal.
I’m talking about public opinion at large. It definitely has been wrong before, and I truly hope I’m wrong to hate this pick, but it appears to be a reach in a very vital draft. This move could really set us back or it could be what puts us over the top. I guess time will tell, but for the time being I really just don’t like this pick.
I would have to agree. We don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.
Answer, the Cavs already have TT. They probably didn’t need T-Rob unless he grew 3 or 4 more inches.
They pick TT last year to just fill a spot. They pick Waiters this year to fill a spot. I hate that way of thinking to build a championship team. You have to go with the best player avaiable to get talent in here before you need to fill a spot. You fill a spot in the high 20’s type picks. You pick talent earlier. I do think Waiters is a good player but I don’t like the TT pick and I don’t like passing on T-Rob.
The only reason they would draft TRob would be to dangle him in front of the Bobcats along with another draft pick to get MKG. I like the Waiters pick.
Why do they make more sense?
Ive been calling for this kid. Really like the pick! Welcome to CLE Dion. You might have D-Wade but we got D-Wait!!
As far as upside and ability goes I was under the impression both of them were in a tier above Waiters. I sincerely hope I’ll be eating some crow though, in Chris Grant I trust I suppose.
The reason I’m so upset about this pick is not only because he’s an underachiever on the court (look at the guards he played behind at syracue, not exactly high caliber), but he also comes off as extremely arrogant for a guy who accomplished absolutely nothing in college and couldn’t even crack the starting lineup.
I hope do too! Also, any arguments tonight really are pointless. Waiters is the pick and he will work out or not, we really have no way of knowing.
