May 15, 2012While We’re Waiting… Helping Weeden, valuing Kyrie and assessing the risk involved in playing football
May 16, 2012What I will tell you is we’ve got a freshman at Alabama that’ll probably make us forget about Trent Richardson already. They’re that good down in Tuscaloosa right now. Trent’s a physical player. So is Ray [Lewis]. They asked [Ravens top draft choice] Courtney Upshaw about playing against Trent, and he said, ‘I think I can get him on the ground.’ That’s what’s fun … When we come to town, (Richardson) may not get to Ray because he’s got to get to [Haloti] Ngata and [Terence] Cody first. We’ll see.
— Browns Hall of Fame tight end and current Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, speaking on Tuesday night, on the first matchup between Browns running back Trent Richardson and eventual Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis

Ray Lewis will get put on his geriatric ass by TRich. Then, come off the field on 3rd down.
I’d be more worried of Ray Lewis going all “The Last Boyscout” on TRich and pulling out a handgun as he races by him.
(Remember, Lewis likely has killed a man.)
It makes me sad that Ozzie works for the Forces of Evil and Darkness.
Hey, we finally have a player that the Ravens deem worthy of comment. Even if it was a response to a question, even if it was just a shrug off.
Next stop: unexpected punch in the mouth win against overconfident Baltimore. After that, a win when they’re ready for us. It’s a process, as some guy here used to say.
Not true: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2011-12-02/sports/bal-hillis-on-ravens-mind-but-not-in-their-memory-20111201_1_peyton-hillis-terrell-suggs-ravens
I can’t find it now, but there was an article on this site, too, regarding the Ravens’ “approach” to Hillis.
I remember this as well, it was after Hillis torched them in their first meeting correct?
Correct. He was the only back to run for over 100 yards against the Ravens defense.
When they were set to play the Ravens for the second time, there was an article on this site about how they were going to deal with him, and that they were…miffed that he torched them so bad,
THANK GOD we don’t have him on our team anymore…lol.
(Kidding aside, I love TRich and I can’t wait to see him in action. I just think they horribly bungled the Hillis situation).
I smell fear.
If you’re scared, Ozzie, just say you’re scared.
Traitor.
That’s right! I as well cannot wait to see TRich. Hopefully he will hold on to the ball better and stay on the field.
It’s a business. Plain/simple.
That being said: he’s a traitor. And he will never receive a Christmas card from me.
I see your Ngata and Cody and raise you a Thomas and Schwartz
An important piece of information is missing from this thread. Ozzie Newsome is an Alabama alum. Praising other Bama alum should come as no surprise (though yes, TRich deserves the praise).
have to add Mack in there (he will block Ngata/Cody – whoever lines up at NT on a particular play) more than anyone else.
also, when they go 4-3 (which they do on us alot), Ngata/Cody will be blocked by Mack + Lauvao/Pinkston (or Miller).
I think Ozzie’s statement was a thinly veiled jab at our OG situation from last year.
Good call. Ozzie would of been more dismissive if he didn’t come from Alabama. It does stink that Ozzie’s loyalty is with Modell though. He was one of my favorite players again taken away by weird circumstances.
Mike, TRich had a total of 1 fumble in his collegiate career… I wouldn’t worry about him holding onto the ball just because he needs to get used to Brandon and how or where he puts the ball on handoffs. That’s what training camp is for. He’s went something like 600+ attempt without a fumble. Yeah, not bad.
We just need to hope and pray that the injury bug does not bite him.
That’s great, I was referring to him being an upgrade over Hillis since he had trouble holding on to the ball at times. But hell yeah! 1 drop in 600+ is certainly encouraging.
Yeah, fumbles with TRich are the last thing on my mind.
To be fair, I think Hillis did a good bit of the bungling too.
Ozzie did not turn down a NFL job in Cleveland to follow Modell so not sure what we would expect him to do. When the Browns moved he was nothing more than another ex-jock offered a low-level personnel position by the team he played for. Modell gave him the opportunity to get his foot in the door and he took it. Don’t know of any other teams begging for his services then, so unfair to expect that he instead should have stuck around town and sold paper supplies like Cleo Miller.
Actually, maybe Ozzie’s success convinced Policy that Dwight Clark would be a good GM.
2 men.
I hope all of that comes out in the wash. From the snippets we get from an angry Walrus, a challenged Shurmur and a smooth-talking, selling ice to Eskimos Heckert…I wonder.
Oh you’re right. Lordy.
Didn’t Ray Lewis hint that if the NFL took “his game away” during the lockout that he may have to turn to crime…because, what else would he do?
UPDATE: Once more, I am right…and he did: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/05/22/ray-lewis-crime-rate-will-rise-if-lockout-lingers/
I hear ya, and I think there is plenty of blame to go around. I just can’t ignore the way Hillis burns thru agents, the low price the Browns paid to get him, the lack of interest in re-signing, and the low low price the Chiefs shelled out for him to be a backup.
Two schools of thought: Hillis was a head case moron who was too full of pride and stupidity to accept the offer from the Browns because he thought he could get much, much more.
Second school: The Browns didn’t like his locker-room presence, his constant criticism of the team/coach for mis-using his Hulk powers, and decided to part ways.
Somewhere in between?
LoL yea I’m sure he wakes up in the middle of the night worrying about the fourth best team in his division.
Yea and he won’t get passed terelle suggs either! Oh wait………
Yeah…and a river runs through it. 🙂
May the “SCHWARTZ ” be with you!
Why do you post on here? Every post is negative or bashing the Browns. Get a life, seriously.
Hey thanks captain obvious. I think most of us knew the scenario but he never even tried to go back to cleveland in any capacity. I don’t care about who offered who opportunities the fact that when he accepted this gig he basically turned his back on Cleveland. So not only is Modell a piece of crap for what he did(and I know why he did it with the stadium deal so I don’t need a history lesson) but he also took one of my favorite players. Ozzie Newsome is a good gm and seems like a nice person but I hope he fails in Baltimore miserably.
Ozzie was employed as a coach with the team before the Browns moved.
When the deal was done Ozzie’s job was moved to Baltimore; leaving him no job in Cleveland.
It’s not so much a question of loyalty as it was a matter of employment.
I’ll agree on your “it’s a business” point but disagree on the “traitor” tag.
Ozzie worked for the Browns as a coach/FO person when the team was moved to Baltimore; hence his job was moved to Baltimore.
If your company asked you to relocate because your position was being eliminated in the current city you worked in or wait around without a job until a new office is opened in your city 5 years later which would you do?
misplaced comment.
wow.
yeah we’ve all been asked that question. I guess it depends on the job and the economy, etc. Could Ozzie get by? Probably. Can Sbucks employee # 3892303? Probably not.
I don’t know why he bashes the Browns…it’s not like they have been terrible for years and the supposed savior of the situation, Mike Holmgren, has been lashing out at fans threatening their playoff tickets.
If Hillis can get to him Richardson will bury him.
I was thinking its more like for once you’re right, and you’re really not, he wasn’t talking about himself as much as the entire NFL.
While I agree, he was great at securing the ball, the college ball is smaller than an NFL ball, thus easier to secure.
true, he could have most likely “gotten by” but most likely wanted to continue to work his way up the ladder to not just get by.
the opportunity moved to Baltimore, as much as it sucked.
I’m entitled to give my opinion just like you and everyone else that’s why. Unlike you I don’t feel the need to tell others what to say or think. Lastly I was replying to someone else, not you. Have a nice day!
Are you surprised by the reaction, really? I could care less that Ozzie is in Baltimore he deserves credit for what he’s done.
Karma’s a !@#$%. Let’s hope Ozzie figures that out sooner than later.
you can find him in his office on saturdays shouting SEC! SEC! SEC!
actually, the NFL football has a better grip, making it easier to hold on to
gottems
hahaha “i think i can get him on the ground”
doesn’t sound very confident coming from a linebacker drafted in the first round.
Seriously? That’s your point?
You just won one free internet.
