Pick #245: Browns Select CB Trevin Wade
April 28, 2012Report: Browns sign UDFA Josh Cooper
April 28, 2012And it’s over! After three days and countless trades, the Browns are down with their selections in the 2012 NFL Draft.
The final selection with the 40th pick in the seventh round was tight end Brad Smelley from Alabama. Fittingly, ESPN just showcased on the bottom line that Smelley had a career-high four touchdown receptions this past year as the starting H-back for the national champions.
Smelley has decent size at almost 6-feet-2-inches and 233 lbs, but wasn’t very high on many boards. He doesn’t have ideal speed, burst or agility, and his top attribute in many different regards are his great hands.
On ESPN, Mel Kiper Jr said that Alabama QB AJ McCarron relied upon Smelley quite often this past season. Kiper said Smelley is a clutch guy with great hands who is someone to watch out for in the future.
Smelley will have some tough competition, even though the Browns are desperate for consistent wideouts. The team has stockpiled on tight ends over the past few years, and Smelley likely will need to shine throughout the offseason in order to get consistent playing time.
Stay tuned by tomorrow for all of the latest analysis from the WFNY crew. Thanks for sticking with us throughout this three-day process and come back soon for our thoughts.

This pick stinks.
Huge Kudos to Team Brady!!!
On behalf of 100 million of your likewise humor-challenged fellow comedians on the internet, I just want to express our deep admiration for that incredibly witty post.
I’m sure that Brad has never in his life heard such a fantastically funny play on words.
There is nothing — and I mean NOTHING — funnier than ridiculing a guy for his name.
Well done, TB.
whoa, sensitive! is your last name Vagyna or something? Breathe…
Why didn’t you get upset when someone posted “Travis Half-Year” or called Holmgren “Homegrum?”
Oh, wait… because it was you. This week. OK, then.
Then we top it off by signing a dude named Sweat. I am all in on this ferocious duo Smelley Sweat. We can strike fear into the hearts of the AFC North knowing Smelley Sweat is on their way.
A team can never have enough TEs!
specialty STer?
goodbye Alex Smith as blocking-TE?
I only clicked on this story to see if someone wrote “This pick stinks.” I didn’t really think it was funny, I just wanted to see if anyone wrote it. Then I saw Smelly Sweat, and that made me laugh. I guess what I’m trying to say is you made reading these comments worth my time. Good work.
Great pick by the Browns, I thought they might draft him because of Richardson. I don’t how to embed, so please google “grantland brad smelley” for an amazing breakdown of how he is the key to their running success. This is due to his versatility and decision making in the Alabama offense. A terrific read that I cannot recommend enough.
Either Smith or Marecic. Marecic didn’t look very good last year but the whole running game stank. If Smelley can catch better than Marecic I vote a two back or wing set with Richardson and Smelley. That’d be spiffy.
