Predicting wins and losses is more difficult than the Browns schedule
April 18, 2012Cavaliers Will Try to Lose By Less Than 39 Points at Home Against Philly
April 18, 2012With the third-overall selection becoming as much of an uncertainty the selection owned by the Cleveland Browns, the Berea Faithful will hold a private workout for Southern California offensive tackle Matt Kalil on Wednesday.
Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer reports that Kalil, the top-rated offensive lineman of NFL Draftees, will be conducting his second meeting with Cleveland as the 6-foot6-inch, 300-pounder was in town for a private visit earlier this month.
The Minnesota Vikings, owners of the third-overall pick, have reportedly been looking for partners to trade down. In the event they do stay at No. 3, the Vikings could use help at left tackle, but have also been rumored to be in the mix for LSU cornerback Mo Claiborne.
If Kalil falls to the fourth pick, Cabot reports that the Browns would most likely field offers from teams interested in trading up for a premier starting left tackle as he would be moved to right tackle in Cleveland — the fourth-overall pick has been considered by many to be too costly for a player tasked primarily with run blocking. Kalil served as a backup right tackle in 2009 and started one game at that spot against Boston College.
“Joe Thomas to me is a good comparison [to Kalil],” said ESPN’s Todd McShay. “I think Kalil has a little bit more — I don’t want to say nasty in him, but he’s got a nasty side.”

He’s probably the best trade-bait. A lot of top-ten teams should be interested in that trade. I can’t see going out of the top-ten.
Be careful what you say there McShay.
I’m starting to hear rumors about Blackmon falling down the draft boards.
I’d be shocked if we took Kalil at 4. I just can’t see it. He holds too much value to be taken as a RT.
That’s what Tony Grossi said on MS&LL last night too.
The Browns brass is headed to USC. They can’t work him out in Cleveland; they have to go to him.
JoeT might use McShaw as a fishing lure after that statement
agreed. LT is more valuable than RT, so the teams that need him as a LT should be willing to pay more to trade with us than his value to our team.
here’s hoping at least (would love a 2nd this year and 1st next year – cmon Arizona or Buffalo, you know you want to).
You have to draft Trent Richardson.
I agree… But lets say he falls to #4 and we cant work out a deal.
Remember how having a bad right tackle hurt the Browns so much last year? Yes, teams put their best pass rusher on the other side most of the time, and yes it is not the QBs blind side. But, having a great RT is not a bad thing at all and would give any QB lots of time. Think about it, two pro bowlers to stop the outside rush…I’ll take that.
Kalil better be careful in this private workout. Probably not in shape to do all the winking and nodding.
If he falls to us, I would take him, then wait to see who takes Reiff, and swap with the other team throwing in an extra 2nd rounder.
If Kalil falls to #4, be prepared to draft in the Eagles spot @ 15.
RT is too undervalued anymore. Most teams don’t line up like we line up (with the same guy on the same side every play). They’ll being the rush from anywhere. Unless you have an elite QB that can see the pressure and move away from it, the non-blind side advantage doesn’t help. Young QBs panic about pressure whether they see it or not.
I tend to agree with that… I mean look at the SB Champ Giants – they move their d-line all over. If a guy beats the RT and gets a sack its no less impactful than if a guy beats the LT and gets a sack.
That’d be fine by me for the right price. We need ammo to go after a top QB next year or just pick up more starters this year. The odds would be in our favor trading down.
some elite QBs can sense the blindside pressure. all QBs can see a 300LB DL that got past the RT. that’s why LTs are more valuable (unless you have a southpaw QB)
if noone is willing to offer us fair compensation for Kalil and we feel he can play RT, then I have no qualms taking him. plenty of WRs and RBs I like in this draft to fill those spots with our other picks.
I thought only ex-Bills LTs could start for the Eagles
Oh I absolutely agree… But then again, just because you can see the 300lb DL that is in your face casuing pressure and thorwing you to the ground does not make it much better.
Yes, one has more time to see the rush and elude it, but that still messes up the play and passing progressions, allows other defenders to have more time to get more pressure, etc.
At some point, QB pressure is QB pressure. It causes serious problems no matter where it comes from and the ability to stop it is invaluable.
Could you imagine Thomas or Kalil pulling for a sweep with both of them blocking side by side?
That would have to be a monster sweep only problem is the Browns need a RB who could actually run it.
I just hope he’s ready to chug some beers with Holmgren… I get the feeling that Holmgren could probably drink a case without slurring a word.
true and why I want a RT in this draft early. if it’s Kalil great. if we can drop back to #10, get an extra 2nd and a 1st next year and still get the 2nd best RT (or possibly best as some think Kalil is LT-only), then even better.
I would take a 2nd this year and next for that pick or more but don’t think we would get much more than that. Point chart says it is about an 800 point diff from 4th – 15th – which would be about 2 – 2nd rounders. I know they don’t always go by that but it is something to base it off of. I would rather take those picks over Kalil. We could get @The_Real_Shamrock:disqus top receiver, running back, and 2 OL guys in the first 2 rounds. We would be looking really good at that time.
personally, I think the point chart is out-dated with the new rookie wage scale. it makes the top10 picks much more valuable than is indicated on it.
The workout is just to check on his Twitter thumbs.
I think the Eagles roll this year, so next years 2nd would be around #55. I hope we would go for the 1st rounder next year to set us up for the top QB. To get next years first we’d give up our high (top 5) third probably. I might like Kalil better than #15 anyway.
Put all the ex-bills O Linemen in a cage vs. Kalil and my moneys on Kalil to walk out on top of a bunch of bodies.
and at about a case and a half he forcefully proclaims “I’m telling you, it’s different now.”
Cleveland…do what you have to do to protect the QB….dang it!
they want dt fletcher cox and they said there trading up but not to four, but did have talks………
if you traded down out of the top five your losing out on a real play maker and we would deserve a number one pick next year atleast.
if kalil is there the browns will take him because he is head and shoulders above the rest. if he is gone they want to trade down but no farther the pick 8. all the eagles are doing is helping there buddies out in prez mike and gm hecks build up a stronger trade for us….the rams and redskins had there buddy trading deal going on with the rams fisher and his buddy over there with the redskins to get griffin 111
now its more the talent and rating of the player and if he is a big game changer
i think they ran out so if lt reiff falls to bills pick they will give him up to the eagles for a fifth round pick mcshay said…lol
lets get him and trade up for richardson…deep class of wr’s we be ballin
ah tell kalil to tell his buddy barkley to come out in supplemental draft and we will pay him number one pick money and give our 2013 pick to the supplemental draft…and there is your o-line,rb,franchise qb….2012 and 2013 are deep classes for wr’s so add a cb and de along the way and where sitty good
stay tall and strong at four grab kalil, kalil talk to barkley for the supplemental draft also trade up to get richardson with our mountin of picks and maybe another future number one if we had two
thomas mack kalil and add og’s and run you over all sunday
yes and kalil, and have kalil recruit barkley for supplemental draft and lets go…so many teams want to trade down …with pick 22 and mountin of other picks throw a future number one pick and lets grab three very good players right now
there going there for all three man this is the shcrap im telling you we got it cleveland get excited about football again thats why there going to usc for both and they will get richardson too man this is going to be a good year for browns fans
man we getting them all woof it up bitcrap
can see him all day driving him in the ground, unlees you faster then him
lt thomas lg osemele(second round pick) c mack rg brooks(third round pick) rt kalil qb barkley rb richardson……………….trade our 2013 second rounder,2012 first round pick 22 and 2014 first rounder and second rounder to the vikings for pick three and draft at pick three richardson and pick four kalil.. our 2013 first pick goes to supplemental draft for barkley after kalil tells him he should coe to the nfl and get number one pick money
I actually heard someone make an excuse for Gabbert, saying that his terrible right side of the line let him see the pressure coming, which hurt his development. I dunno if that’s true but it does make a bit of sense.
yes they all can see it but still screws the play up with the presure and hurries and sacks and forced throws…rt is too under valued. yes the blind side is very imortant but the whole o-line is very impotant!
yes i remember tim couch, david carr, ect top picks saying they where upset about all the presure they saw from the og’s and rt sacking them 69 times a year and completely destroying there career.
tom brady was saying if someone could block justin tuck on the right tackle side,i would have more time to win the super bowl
im all for extra number one picks and adding more talent. but kalil is head and shoulders above the rest and a chance to upgrade an important postion and a teams weakness while picking a player that is rare and dont have the chance to draft to often
