Browns Select Trent Richardson #3 in the 2012 NFL Draft
April 26, 2012Round 2 NFL Mocks: Kiper and McShay say WR Stephen Hill
April 27, 2012With the 22nd-overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected Brandon Weeden, quarterback out of Oklahoma State.
There was heavy speculation that wide receiver Kendall Wright would be the selection had he not gone 20th-overall to Tennessee. With the addition of Weeden, there will instantly be a quarterback controversy in Cleveland as Weeden will be 29-years of age and Colt McCoy’s 2011 season left a lot to be desired from a progression standpoint.
In 2011, Weeden led a high-powered Cowboys offense, throwing for over 4,7oo yards and amassing 37 touchdowns with a completion percentage of 72.3 percent.
This selection falls right in line with the last mock draft submitted by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. Already having bolstered their run game with the addition of Trent Richardson, the Browns will look to address the wide receiver and offensive line positions through the duration of the draft.

all of them have been to the playoffs
you wanted Kellen Moore in the 1st?
the #22 pick in the draft has to be put in value in that equation.
Flynn+Reiff/Glenn or Weeden
I’ll take my chances with the younger prospect who has 3 years learning the WCO, has experience starting in the NFL, and happened to excel in those experiences.
But, that is a dead horse now.
I think those of us that are upset about the pick (as I’ve stated over and over) are upset because we could have had Riley Reiff at 22 and secured the RT spot for 10 years. Weeden is a good QB, and will play well for 6-8 years. But he would have been there at 37. That’s the point.
That being said… He’s a Brown now, and I love the guy. I just hope Cordy Glenn somehow falls to us at 37… or Stephen Hill. We gotta get get Weeden a WR. Maybe a Mike Wallace signing is in order (as much as I hate him).
it was a Freudian slip, you meant you were down with being negative 🙂
and the Cleveland Browns select to play WR in the 2nd round: Jaret Wright
I think T Rich will help this offense, including the passing game, a lot more than most people realize.
when he steps into his throws, he has a slightly above average arm. however, he also usually doesn’t step into this throws and has a baseball windup motion on his deeper throws (takes too much time to get them out and gives the S’s a tell as to where he is throwing).
i’m hoping for the best, but not expecting it at this point.
I don’ t hate the pick as much as most……but how do you take Richardson and then pass on Decastro?! I don’t get it.
local sports shops will sew on a new name for you. so that was a good deal!
yeah, i’ll take any Braylon jerseys people have too. just have to put the new name of the new player that takes the number 🙂
the parallel with the name Quinn being in a disaster movie is just erie
yeah, might as well waste another pick while we are giving them away 🙂
good point. hopefully the Browns have a sabremetric team of analysts that are telling them Weeden was undervalued by everyone else like the Cavs did with tigger.
What other teams need a QB? Literally every other team in the NFL has a guy they have projected as a starter, or a young player waiting to take over. There was no one else in the market for a QB. Any team that WOULD want a QB would pick a long-term player with big upside. Weeden is an old player with very limited upside that MUST play right away, He is probably there in round 3.
someone could have seen the Browns need and targeted a trade ahead of the Browns at #37. now, even then, the Browns probably should have just traded up from #37 instead, but I can at least understand that angle. KC the most likely team.
NO! This may be the worst PLANNED draft choice in the last 50 years. There are 0 teams in the market for a QB like Weeden in the NFL. Name 1 team that wants a rookie QB that MUST start right away? Not one of them is trading up to the top of the first round for Weeden.
I like Riley Reiff, but it’s not certain Weeden would’ve been there at 37, (didn’t Heckert mention that?). A RT would’ve been great but QB is the most important position in arguably all of sports. You simply will not contend if you do not have a QB that can play at a high level. In that regard, I love the pick.
im just 100% on everything here. well said.
Given the number of trades that we saw in the 1st round, you have to think about the possibility of a team trading up to take Weeden before 37. Seattle, KC, Buffalo all could have conceivably moved up in front of us to take him, given their supposed needs at QB. That had to have been H&H’s thinking……….
Heckert drafted Kolb in Philly. That pick was panned at the time. Another shotgun QB that hasnt panned out. Heckert is terrible at drafting QBs.
I too, like most of you, was disappointed with the pick initially after seeing the other prospects that were available. After sleeping on it and thinking back to how terrible Colt McCoy has been in a Browns uniform I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t hate this pick as much as I did. Could he have been there at 37, maybe? But if we get Hill, Randle or Jeffrey at 37 will it matter in the end? Here are my brief thoughts.
1) McCoy is terrible. Horrendous even. Anyone who watched him try to play QB1 last year should have way less hair and the hair that is still there is probably gray. He is not an NFL starting QB. I don’t care what the talent was around him. He made terrible decisions, terrible plays and he has the arm strength of a Pee Wee League All-Star. Every backup QB in the NFL is better than Colt.
2) We need right side help on the offensive line. No doubt. There are a lot of quality prospects still on the board. Will any of them be there with our third round pick, sure, but probably not the “sexy pick” guys everyone knows about because of our love with mock draft overloads. Let’s face it. There are a ton of top lineman that were drafted late or even undrafted. We can wait on lineman.
3) As I said above, if Hill, Randle or Jeffrey are taken at 37 does the Weeden pick at 22 really even matter. Maybe you could have reached to take Hill or Randle at 22 and hoped Weeden had been there at 37, but if he wasn’t you don’t draft a QB there anyways.
4) The draft isn’t over. Let’s see what happens in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Maybe we trade up into the mid second if a lineman we really like falls back. Maybe we don’t, but the Browns should be graded on the overall draft, not what they did on the first day. Besides the T Rich pick with the trades is an A+. If we would have kept all 13 draft picks what percentage of those picks would have even made the team.
5) McCoy is terrible… oh wait, already said that, sorry.
6) This isn’t a playoff team now and it won’t be a playoff team after this draft. Reactions that I see make me think that this draft and these two first round picks will dictate what happens to this franchise moving forward. This team may win 2 games or they may win 7 games next year. Who knows? We won’t know what the team actually looks like until they play the games. So if we have another top 5 pick next year we get the best available player and all these guys we’ve drafted in the past 3 years have an extra year of experience and we have more salary cap room in the 2013 off season. What’s the name of this blog again?
In closing, please everyone, back off the ledge. Let the kid prove himself. And if he sucks then we draft a QB1 next year after H & H are fired.
Really? Is that what you want? You want ANOTHER new GM to come in and trade away Haden and Thomas and let Sheard walk because he’s instituting the type of offense that runs over right guard and switching the defense to Cover 2? I would rather sit on the tiny progress we’ve made and look forward to five years of top ten picks than watch that happen again.
I’d rather have richardson than the extremely overrated Blackmom
my feelings also after I calmed down a little. I just wanted them to take a WR there so I could relax, but it’s not about about my draft night anxiety and no one will care when they get whom if the whom they get can play.
My other take is that Heckert just put a ring on Weeden, just married his reputation to this guy. A ballsy move when the QB is 28. In that sense I admire Heck, he’s fearless about who he thinks can play and he’s going to try and get him. I’m starting to wonder if Holmgren’s got too cute and kept Heckert from getting Griffin via trade, and maybe last night’s bold moves showed Heckert asserting himself.
Think how much more excited you are now to watch the browns. A new QB and a new RB…maybe we can move the ball a little.
Also, I expect them to get back into the end of the second round. I expect a new WR and a new OL or LB in the second.
Heck i would have rather had Jason Campbell who is less than 2 years older than Weedon.
Campbell has a better TD-INT rate than Matt Hasselbexk and nearly identical comp% and passer rating.
I will be surprised if Weeden ever matches Campbell even.
Or shaun alexander….the real reason the Seahawks were good when Holmgren was there.
Why were you excited when Holmgren camr to town?
He was fired as GM of the Seahawks afte 2002 and 3 straight missed playoffs.
Did you think he would be any better as team president??
10% ????
You obviously arent a browns fan. With the amount i have ti drink to watch these games, no way am i living past 50
I don’t want it to happen at all, but to steal from our soon to be departed Mr. McCoy; “The hay is in the barn” for H&H. If Weeden is a bust there is almost nothing these guys can do to stop the poo-storm backlash from the fans that will most likely cost them their jobs. I don’t like, check that, I won’t go through another regime change. As Kramer said “I’m out!” if we do it again. However at least now we get to know that answer now rather than 2 years from now. They took somewhat of a flier on the type of pick that never works out for us*. If Weeden works then Heckert has the magic eye and this thing is going to work if he fails and gets chased out of town I can get my fan resume together and start shopping for another team.
* Can we all please put our own grief and worry aside and have a moment of silence for our suffering brothers in Seattle. There baseball team is a bigger mess then ours. There whore of a basketball team is going to be trapsing around on National television for the next few weeks reminding them of how it didn’t work out, and then Pete Carrol saves Heckert from being the most second guessed GM on draft day by going after his own “mad dog in a meat market”. Seattle, I offer you a Good Will Hunting “Its not your fault” hug anytime you need it.
I knew you’d all come around. One way or another.
Can someone please remind me which there and their I should use?
Agreed. I think the main thing this pick shows is: 1) the team thinks McCoy is a big problem, and 2) they could care less about Weeden’s age. They view him as a top-tier talent, and see other remaining QBs as a big drop off.
My guess is that they would have taken Wright if he was there, and then vigilantly watched Weeden and traded back up to get him if necessary. Now we have Weeden and will likely get Randle. So I am OK with that.
Well, like I said, I’m not ready to swing it just yet. I’m still in the “patience” camp, and haven’t enlisted in the mob just yet, but this pick tests it severely. I can see an outcome that could work and be quite successful, but a ton rides on what happens tonight – and I still need to see Weeden and Richardson on the field.
I’ll keep the pole-axe sharpened, but it won’t be employed. Not yet. Not yet.
there is a place (the best WR available played there).
their is a plural possessive (their draft picks are worth more than ours)
they’re is a contraction (they’re out of their minds for picking him)
Why not “they’re”?
Well technically its Quint, too much Weed(en) and an Arrogant Bastard got the better of my typing. Still a damn fine monologue about the Indy. In my book its second only to Rick Moranis’s explaining the coming of Gozer in Ghostbusters.
People, Steve Young was 30 when he got his first start in San Fran. He turned out to be pretty good, right? Everyone needs to relax a little bit, the Browns got a 6’4″ QB with a strong and accurate arm who’s maturity will improve his ability to lead his new teammates. I’m looking forward to next season now that I know McCoy is gone. They’ll get Stephen Hill tonight anyways…
Yeah, ‘cuz Kosar sucked!?! I’m pretty sure everyone here would relish the idea of another Bernie Kosar starting for the Browns but you.
oh, I thought you mis-typed it on purpose there.
I can not believe I had to read through 30 minutes of negativity. I am glad for the positive fans on here – GingerSnap22 and others…..
I posted this back in February: 2 months ago
I have the answer:
Draft Richardson at #4, then draft the best DE – Pass rusher at the next pick in the first round.
2nd round take QB Brandon Weeden and 3rd round take OT – Pass blocker
Those are our biggest problems on the team. Do not take a Receiver because we took 3 in the 2nd round for the past 2 years. QB is our biggest problem followed by defensive end and offensive tackle.
We will have a better chance of a winning season in 2 years if we go this route.
Richardson and Weeden will have at least 6 years of quality play.
Three years from now, we can be competing in the playoffs.
yeah, people are comparing Weeden to Warner when we should be comparing Richardson to Faulk
Ridiculous comparison, and you aren’t the only one I’ve seen make it. Young spent years in NFL practices, with NFL players, learning NFL systems from NFL coaches. Weeden played in the Big 12 after wearing down his arm failing to catch on in MLB.
What good is Hill if Weeden has no time to throw? Unless that cannon arm of his works while lying on his back. Whiffing on Reiff and DeCastro is just brutal.
I agree that Weeden would’ve been there, but a team can only pay for so many 1st round picks on their O-line. We’d be the only team in the league with three 1st round picks on their O-line and NO play-makers. They’ll still get a good RT, but it’s DEFINITELY time for some play-makers here.
Dude, how many 1st round picks can you put on an O-line? We’d have three 1st round picks on our O-line and ZERO playmakers (Richardson’s comin’ though). What’s the point?
My point w/ the Weeden comparison is that Young played from 91-99, 8 years, at the age of 30+, and won a Superbowl. So what if Weeden’s old? He can still possibly play for 10 years at a high level. He’s an IMMEDIATE upgrade over McCoy and legitimizes the offense.
You’re trying to sell the fact that a RT and some playmakers would’ve done it for the Browns. You’ll see that McCoy will be a career backup after he leaves today, and that by keeping him and adding weapons, they would’ve just been spinning the tires for another year. They could put a 1st round pick at EVERY SINGLE O-LINE POSITION and still failed w/ McCoy at QB.
you are both wrong. Young was a starter in the USFL and then a NFL starter for 2 years in Tampa in his early-mid 20s before he was traded to SF to be heir apparent to Montana. He was a very experienced starter before he began warming their bench.
But we have to build through the draft!!!
I said he was 30 when he got his start in San Fran… that’s not wrong.
MY POINT is that he played AT A HIGH LEVEL throughout his 30’s for roughly 10 years, so why can’t Weeden do the same. Sheesh…
Clearly you have a much higher opinion of Weeden than I, as I don’t understand what makes him an IMMEDIATE upgrade over McCoy. As Harv points out so astutely, Young was hardly green when he got his chance. In Weeden’s case, his age brings him no greater advantages as he tries to grab the starting spot. In fact, it means he’s had less development time than guys his age currently in the league. Oh, and the wear and tear of pitching.
And seeing as we had no RT and no playmakers last year, yes, I do think they could have made a difference for McCoy. I don’t think he’s top-tier NFL talent either, but I know he wasn’t given any real chance to prove it either way in his time here. Had we given him a line and some weapons and he failed, then grab Barkley or whoever next year’s Griffin III turns out to be. Instead we’ll go with a middling stopgap RT (especially if Hill really is our target at #37), Weeden will find no time to get the ball to anyone, and won’t have the mobility to do anything about it. McCoy may have been beat up by season’s end, but Brandon Weeden would have been dead by Week 8 last year.
I mean, if getting quality RTs is so easy, then what’s our excuse for the past decade? I don’t care if we use a first rounder on the line every year. Until we can protect and run block, all the shiny playmakers in the world won’t mean a thing.
