NFL Draft: WVU’s Bruce Irvin to visit Cleveland Browns

The Browns are certainly putting in their homework on the outside linebacker position as it appears they’re planning for life after (or without) Scott Fujita. They are also, apparently looking to get faster and more athletic at the spot as they are set to meet with West Virginia’s Bruce Irvin. Aaron Wilson of Scout.com has the report.

West Virginia outside linebacker-defensive end Bruce Irvin has a busy schedule with upcoming visits with the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans and the Kansas City Chiefs, according yo a league source with knowledge of the situation.

The 6’3″ 245 pounder is fast (4.5 in the 40 yard dash) and has played both outside linebacker and some defensive end with his hand on the ground. He isn’t without risks though. After an impressive Combine, Irvin was arrested on a Saturday night in Morgantown for allegedly beating up on a helpless sign at Jimmy John’s. The 24-year old faces destruction of property charges.

The Browns have been content to take chances on guys with character issues after interviewing them.

No way man. That sign had it coming…

  • Helpless sign? My sources in Morgantown say that the Jimmy Johns sign is constantly spouting off and causing problems in local bars. Everything I’ve heard is that the sign totally had it coming.

  • Garry_Owen

Rumor is that the sign taunted Irvin saying, loosely quoted, “my combination of two first names is better than yours!”

Some people see college jock on the edge, I see a nice fit for our midwest sensibilities: Notice he didn’t have one of his posse go after the sign for him, he took responsibility and did it himself. This kid is grounded, a self-starter, he probably comes from a stable family and understands us.

Sources close to the situation also report the sign was actually Peyton Hillis in his first undercover CIA operative assignment.

Speed and athleticism at OLB is much needed.

Where is this guy projected?  Is this a second round guy?  Third?

  • Brandonthehero

I think destroying Jimmy John’s signs shows the exact behavior we want out of an OLB in this division. I mean, its not like he took the sign into the bathroom and told his bodyguard to keep a heads up.

Does anyone else consider age a factor when evaluating draft picks? I think 24 is pushing it a little.

  • Tshaw024

This guy is one of my sleeper picks. Is incredibly fast, can rush the passer but also has the fluidity to drop into coverage which we need from the weak side OLB. He should still be on the board in the early third round. I wanted Zach Brown from UNC but I think Irvin provides the same potential further down the draft board.

  • steve-o

He’s a late third or fourth rounder projected to play OLB in a 3-4 defense. Not sure why we’re looking at him unless we want to include some 3-4 looks in our defense next year.

If we are only allowed to bring in 30 guys for official visits as some have reported, why are we wasting a visit  on someone projected to go in the 60-96 range?

  • Vindictive_Pat

I actually think it makes pretty good sense.  The Browns have a need to fill at OLB, but (and I’m assuming here) they know they have bigger needs at RB, WR, and RT which need to be addressed earlier in the draft.  They’re taking a look at a guy who should be there with their 3rd round pick.

  • Tearoy0

I would rather bring in a 3rd or 4th round guy then pick based off of combine and college.  If they have 30 guys then at least 5-10 of their visits should be guys 3rd round and down so we know what we are getting.  Makes sense to me as that means we are focused on offense for the first few picks.

He was probably just upset that the Jimmy johns had run out of sprouts to put on his tuna salad
