NFL News: Texans Cut FB Lawrence Vickers
March 13, 2012Report: Browns kicker Phil Dawson accepts franchise tender
March 13, 2012Twitter is abuzz with Mario Manningham’s quotes from today and for those of you who didn’t get a chance to listen to them on the video on Cleveland.com, here is a transcript of the inanity.
Branson Wright “Have you put any thoughts into the Browns at all?”
Manningham “No, not really.”
(Silence… laughter from Chuck and Branson)
Chuck Yarborough – “We’ve heard rumors that the Browns are not looked at by players around the league as a really good place to go. Is that a true perception or would players really come here?”
Manningham “A lot of players wouldn’t. Like, I’m not trying to put the organization down. But a lot of players, that wouldn’t be their top choices. Because everybody says how cold it is in Cleveland. And there team-wise so it’s a miserable combination.
Chuck Yarborough “Does the unsettled nature of the quarterback position have anything to do with that?”
Manningham “Uh, yeah. Yeah.”
(Silence)
Branson Wright “Mario, what’s important to you in finding that perfect team for you?”
Manningham “Quarterback. You know, and just knowing what’s going on.”
Chuck Yarborough “How hard would it be to leave a quarterback winning QB like Eli Manning?”
Manningham “It’d be hard, but there are a lot of other good quarterbacks also.”
Manningham’s answers were curt, and it felt like Branson Wright and Chuck Yarborough were pulling teeth when they weren’t leading him. In addition, after the question where I stopped transcribing, Manningham seemed to be paying even less attention as what sounded like the door chime of his car indicated he was either arriving at a destination or leaving to go somewhere.
I wonder what Manningham’s agent finds these kinds of activities helpful or not.

I’m actually more upset that Branson Wright is still employed than I am by what Manningham said.
Who cares .. Didn’t have hopes of him here anyways
This was one of the worst interviews of all time! It seemed as though Manningham had no desire to be part of the interview, so why go on? Either he would give two word answers or have to have the question repeated. What a joke
I had no hopes of Branson Wright’s writing ever improving either…
Funny, the weather doesn’t seem to stop players from going to Green Bay. Just tell us that our quarterback situation stinks, it’s not breaking news to anyone in Cleveland.
As dumb as this guy sounds (imagine the comments if he were a poster here!) he does make a point I think we all knew in the back of our minds: people don’t want to play here due to the weather and the suckiness of the team itself. And, why would they? An feeble offense and an even more feeble-minded coach coupled with crap weather. I get it, I really do.
I love my home city and I will never not love it, but part me sees what he is saying. And, it sucks, I agree. Which is why we need to start winning, and QUICKLY, to help improve our image. To these shallow souls who play the game I (we?) love, winning is very crucial to their desire to go to a team and perform for them. Make no mistake, as long as we suffer 4-5 win seasons, the odds of us getting a major Free Agent are slim.

Or the weather in NY where he currently plays for that matter.

Hey, I thought we needed to give Colt another year? Hey be patient, hey.

Didn’t he go to school in Ann Arbor?
Mario, you don’t like the cold?
No, it’s too cold.
They why did you go to the University of Michigan?
Uuuhhh.
If Green Bay made you a nice offer, how long would it take you to say, “Yes.”
Uuuhhh.
You don’t know what you want, do you?
Uuuhhh.
Thanks for your time.
More importantly: Didn’t he go to school in Warren?
See, its hard to get great talent before the QB… A great QB makes people want to come play for the team
Cleveland has been a Siberia for football especially the last 12 years. It sucks to read it or hear it but it’s still the truth. It starts at the top!
Well said.
The truth hurts.
Lordy, I’ve been saying that for months and months.
Yeah, it’s almost like there is another, entirely more important reason he dislikes Cleveland…like the team…and the coach…and the QB, and the ownership.
My own opinion here… I think Mario Manningham is the next Santonio Holmes. Great fit on a team with an offense and QB who can make him successful, but try to make him a #1 WR somewhere else and he flops.
Nice.
Yes, we know.
In other words, I’m predicting he’s heading south to the warm beaches of Baltimore.
Yes it does!
Agreed he’s a nice complimentary player, he’s not a stud #1.
I know right? Its like when Manningham signed with the Giants he only went there because of the QB situation. Whats that? He didn’t sign with them he was “drafted” by them? And they also drafted all 4 of their probowl Dlinemen, and they drafted 3 really good running backs, and Steve Smith, and Hakeem Nicks? Well Victor Cruz must have cost them a fortune in free agency. No? Undrafted pick up huh? Wow! That is a lot of great players not accumulated by paying premium prices at the height or downside of a players career. Somebody might want to call Heckert and clue him in on this “drafting” concept.
Manningham is saying something that we all already know. The stigma of Cleveland and how people perceive us from the rest of america that never comes to Ohio. Cold weather has nothing to do with going to Cleveland or not. There are plenty enough cold teams that do well so we can rule this out. The problem is our owner. You don’t think Randy Lerner abuses us as fans knowing how loyal we are. Lerner cares about the idea and prestige of owning an nfl team and could care less about how we do as long as he doesn’t have to spend money. We run our franchise like a joke and this reflects on us the fans. You are telling me that it took Holmgren to come here to explain to Lerner how important the quarterback is. That is a joke. When Tampa Bay was horrible in the early 1980’s do you think any free agents wanted to sign there and they are in warm weather. It just comes down to winning and having a front office that is competent consistently. I could care less if manningham comes here because he had people doubling nicks and cruz to be open more and ran terrible routes. Should we care if we sign David Tyree because he made one great catch in the superbowl in 2008. Obviously Manningham is slightly better than Tyree but we don’t need him unless he is our 3rd best receiver.
Your giving Manningham way too much credit. Santonio Holmes is one of the best route runners in the nfl. Manningham is terrible at running routes. Holmes and Manningham are both head cases though and I wouldn’t want either one of them.
Hey thanks. What else will you tell us that puppies are cute.
Hey Mario, we’re offering you the most guaranteed money. Whaddya think about Cleveland now?
“It’s like home to me. My brother and I would run out at halftime of Browns games and play football in the street. The fans are the greatest. My mother can finally see me play and blah blah blah blah blah blah …”
I agree with you but list the owner first because the rest of the list would not be there if the owner wasn’t so bad.
What players have gone to green bay. They might of got a couple but they draft smart. In Green Bay you couldn’t get away with how lerner has run the Browns or he would of been fired years ago.
I agree, Holmes is definitely a better route runner. Mark Sanchez probably makes him look worse than he is.
It was uncomfortable watching these guys stand and stare into a camera like that when he was on the phone. It reminds me of public access channel 20 years ago.
“When I was growing up, we hated Cleveland.” – Literally everyone who grew up in Warren. Oh and Akron too.
um, i don’t think Lerner can be fired.
Yeah I know. I was saying if he were in Green Bay and was running the team because Green Bay’s fans own their team.
I’m sure his terse responses were in part driven by wondering just how Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum got his phone number.
Yeah I know. I was saying if he were in Green Bay and was running the team because Green Bay’s fans own their team.
Yeah, and everyone was saying how nuts I was for saying it. Now things are different. Odd how that worked out.
Fair enough.
BREAKING NEWS: The Chicago Bears just traded two 3rd round draft picks to Miami for Brandon Marshall. Seriously? Holmgren and Heckert could’t put a package together that would beat two future mid-rounders??? Are the Browns planning on doing anything at all???
YOUR SO DUMB MARIO MANNINGHAM YOU SAID THAT IT IS THE BAD WEATHER BUT REALLY I KNOW THAT YOU DON’T WANT TO COME HERE BECUASE WE SUCK JUST ADMIT IT ALREADY!!!
Yes, 10 minutes into free agency without any Browns activity means THE BROWNS AREN’T GONNA DO ANYTHING THEY DON’T WANT TO WIN FIRE HOLMGREN AND HECKERT!!!1!!one!
Oh sweet irony.
Welcome to Cleveland.
Agreed… It is a miserable combination for the fans too. See ya at the factory!
Manningham is mediocre at best. He has spent 4 full seasons in the NFL. That’s enough time to know what a player is. If you’re disappointed that we were rebuffed by Mario, just remember this: Rookie Greg Little had more receptions last year than Mario Manningham has had in any of his 4 seasons, and Manningham had a a Pro Bowl/Super Bowl MVP throwing to him. Why in God’s name would I want Manningham???
