Manningham: Cold and team in Cleveland make for a miserable combination

Twitter is abuzz with Mario Manningham’s quotes from today and for those of you who didn’t get a chance to listen to them on the video on Cleveland.com, here is a transcript of the inanity.

Branson Wright “Have you put any thoughts into the Browns at all?”

Manningham “No, not really.”

(Silence… laughter from Chuck and Branson)

Chuck Yarborough – “We’ve heard rumors that the Browns are not looked at by players around the league as a really good place to go. Is that a true perception or would players really come here?”

Manningham “A lot of players wouldn’t. Like, I’m not trying to put the organization down. But a lot of players, that wouldn’t be their top choices.  Because everybody says how cold it is in Cleveland. And there team-wise so it’s a miserable combination.

Chuck Yarborough “Does the unsettled nature of the quarterback position have anything to do with that?”

Manningham “Uh, yeah. Yeah.”

(Silence)

Branson Wright “Mario, what’s important to you in finding that perfect team for you?”

Manningham “Quarterback. You know, and just knowing what’s going on.”

Chuck Yarborough “How hard would it be to leave a quarterback winning QB like Eli Manning?”

Manningham “It’d be hard, but there are a lot of other good quarterbacks also.”

Manningham’s answers were curt, and it felt like Branson Wright and Chuck Yarborough were pulling teeth when they weren’t leading him. In addition, after the question where I stopped transcribing, Manningham seemed to be paying even less attention as what sounded like the door chime of his car indicated he was either arriving at a destination or leaving to go somewhere.

I wonder what Manningham’s agent finds these kinds of activities helpful or not.

  • Blue (Warren’s finest)

Nah, we hated Youngstown. And still do. We’re stuck in the same valley as them and constantly in their filthy shadow.

  • Vindictive_Pat

Makes perfect sense.  I was mocking the statement from LeBron James about growing up in Akron and how they hated Cleveland, supposedly (as he speaks for the entire city of Akron).  Whenever I go to Akron, I see tons of people in Indians, Browns, and Cavs gear.

  • Ritz

How about rather than going in some lame rant thinking you are so great for the sarcastic attack…. Take my comment for what it is. I am simply highlighting the importance of starting the building process with a stud QB and how doing it that way makes the team a destination where drafted players want to be and where free agents want to go.

  • Vindictive_Pat

I’ve heard he makes a mean frittata.

  • Roberto

More WR signing news… Pierre Garcon is signing with the Redskins (go figure), and Vincent Jackson agreed to terms in principle with Tampa Bay. If you add these two to Marques Colston, DeSean Jackson, Dwayne Bowe and Steve Johnson who all re-signed with their former teams, that makes the top SIX wide receivers all signed elsewhere and I have yet to hear that the Browns so much as even made an offer to any one of these.  So much for the year of the Free Agent WR…

The Browns front office is a complete joke.  I can’t wait to watch them sign a scrub like Laurent Robinson now and then try to sell the media and fans about what a huge win this is for us.

  • Jworkman44

While Manningham was clearly showing his distaste for coming to Cleveland, and can you blame him? That was one of the worst interviews I’ve ever heard. The reason he gave short answers was due to a lack of quality questions (not to mention delivery) and one awfully confusing question that needed to be explained due to its complete lack of relevance to a New York super star, at least in is own head. Lay off Manningham, he was trying to be honest while attempting to his laughter at the amateur at best interview he was taking part in.

  • HA!  We couldn’t trade that for him?  Of course not…what a joke this team/organization is.

  • Are you seriously against two third-rounders for Marshall?

  • mgbode

if there are only 32 places of employment, then you do your best to not denigrate any of them.  never know when you might need them.

so, yes, despite the amatuerish interview skills of the questioners, he should know better.

  • Garry_Owen

I’m seriously against whining about what the front office HASN’T DONE after 10 minutes of free agency. Two 3rd rounders is a great price. Good for Chicago being the first team to dial the phone number. It unfortunately has nothing to do with Cleveland.

  • mgbode

I agree that is a great price.   It could have a domino effect on us though if it was done with the thought of other moves (Wayne -> Manning, leaving Flynn open to a fight between Cleveland and Seattle?  I can still hope on that and I will)

  • Garry_Owen

I’m wandering further and further from the Flynn reservation. (Granted, I was always a little lukewarm.) You’re going to have to work to bring me back.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

You won’t see me I’m not an enabler!  Let Dolan I mean Lerner use just his money.

  • mgbode

i’m not going to put much effort.  once Peyton tells Miami he is going elsewhere, Flynn will sign there in less than 24hrs (IMO of course)

  • Garry_Owen

Believe you’re right. Believe Manningham is also right. We’re going to have a tough time signing FAs at all – until this ship gets turned around and moving in the right direction. That’s why this draft is so important.

  • Tim

Hated Manningham at Warren Harding, hated him at Michigan, hate him in New York.  This isn’t surprising.

  • Rudi_in_Seven_Hills

Wait a second…Cleveland isn’t any colder than Buffalo, Pittsburg, Green Bay, New England…or New York for that matter.  That is a !@# copout statement, Manningham, you idiot.  If this moron could put together a 3rd grade level sentence it think his next point would have carried more weight.  The Browns organization has been in chaos since the early 1990’s and it shows no signs of getting better.  THAT is the reason free agents don’t want to come here.  We need a stud QB to change that perception.  The kind of guy who is a difference maker.  What’s that?  We lost the chance to get RGIII?  Looks like my prediction for a 3-13 season is going to come true afterall.

  • Rudi_in_Seven_Hills

and in other related news, Vincent Jackson was just signed by the Bucs.  And Jason Campbell signed as a back up with the Bears.  I know how this story ends…other teams who are more on the ball get the stud free agents and we’ll get some hand-me-down player and act like it was a great off season.

The level of stupidity, laziness, cockiness displayed by Holmgren and his crew is staggering.  We have tons of cap room…WTF would we not be making moves already on day 1???  Vincent Jackson is a freak WR…you know..the kind of “weapon” the front office says they need to get around Colt.

    OMG…I can’t take this !^^#$&# team anymore

  • Psaid2

Nobody has confidence in the Browns organization. Heckert has said the Browns won’t go crazy in free agency – it’s because he knows no one with skill will come here unless they are way over paid

  • Rudi_in_Seven_Hills

I’m sorry Oribiasi…but I’ve got to strongly disagree with you on the weather thing.  There are tons of teams who play in the cold weather.  Seriously, we aren’t any colder than New York, Green Bay, New England, Buffalo, Pittsburg, etc…etc.  That is a straw man arguement that Free Agents don’t want to come here for weather.  They will come if we have great players who will help THEM look good and it starts with the damn QB.  We haven’t had a good QB since Kosar left.  Average completion rate since 1990 – – 57%…pathetic….average TD’s since 1990 – – 18….average INT’s since 1990 – – 18….  I mean come on already.

And players around the league know what a chaotic situation it is to play for the Browns.  They mishandle contracts, screw up in the draft, are lazy in free agency, and talk down to the fans from the front office.  What player in their right mind would want to play here unless there is not other team that wants them.

It all starts with that bastard Lerner who has to go.

  • Rudi_in_Seven_Hills

Let’s see…they aren’t going “crazy” in the draft.  They aren’t going “crazy” in Free Agency.  WTF are they doing then?  OMG…at least the Redskins have a ballsy owner…same in Dallas.  At least they are trying to win.

I honestly think the NFL should do something here like threaten to pull Lerner’s ownership.  They are hurting the NFL brand with what Holmgren & Co. are doing.  They are mismanaging this team so badly.

I’m serious…I’ve heard of other sports leagues doing this.

    Anyone have thoughts on that????

  • Rudi_in_Seven_Hills

And this just in…yet another great WR has been signed leaving the Browns with even less options – – Pierre Garcon just signed with the Redskins!!!!   LMAO

I’m litterally off my chair laughing.  Looking at foxsports.com and there is a ton of FA activity they are reporting for today….the Browns have nothing listed.

    !#@#%&@$#%&#@$&@   I hate this team

  • porkchopexpress

Will any of you “we need to draft an Elite QB to attract free agents, or be the foundation of the franchise, or put a man on the moon, or whatever heck else you think they do please, please, please, start citing some examples of Elite SuperBowl winning QBs that were the cornerstone piece of their franchises building process?

I’ve thrown the list out there several times.  Peyton Manning is the only guy who fits the mold.  I see alot of outrage and handwringing but just dead silence when it comes to actually proving through historical evidence that drafting a QB first is the way to go.

  • porkchopexpress

C’mon, the sarcastic remark was way funnier than the mindless discussion we would have had.  You can’t prove a single team that drafted an “elite” QB as a cornerstone was effective in winning or luring free agents, so lets just have some fun with it.

  • porkchopexpress

Yeah lets just run down Marshall’s rap sheet real quick
    Disorderly conduct arrest
    DUI
    Domestic Violence
    Stabbed by his OWN WIFE
New allegations just filed this week about punching a woman
Oh and lets not forget the cherry on top, he fully admits he instigated the fight that led to the shooting of teammate Darrent Williams, and his fear of testyfying against the drug dealer who did the shooting led to him forcing his way out of Denver.
And you only want to give up 2 3rd rounders for him?  Man I’d just trade the 4 and 22 for this type of guy

  • Ritz

Matthew Stafford – 1st overall pick, started rebuild process with him

Matt Ryan – Team was a mess, drafted Ryan who stabilized franchise, made Roddy White great, team became very good very quick

Drew Brees – Added in free agency when team was horrible, again, added pieces later, he gave franchise legitimacy and success

Cam Newton – Offense MUCH better, Steve Smith wanted to leave but then was more than happy to stay, team on the rise

Ben Roethlisberger – For his second super bowl (not the first of course) with Pitt they built offense around him

Philip Rivers – Team was very bad, drafted Rivers, build team then

Eli Manning – Were bad, drafted Eli, and added players to become winning team

Tom Brady – Have now literly built entire offense around Tom Brady

  • Ritz

I guess I thought you would be able to think of a few on your own… But see my reply to your later post for examples.

  • Ritz

And of course as you already mentioned:

Peyton Manning – Drafted 1st overall, built offense around him

    Additionally, another recent team:

Eagles – McNabb – drafted high, build around him

  • MarleyHatchet

I hope you’re joking. No, they don’t. At all. They have no say in any football matters whatsoever. It’s partial ownership in name only.

  • MarleyHatchet

I hope you’re joking. No, they don’t. At all. They have no say in any football matters whatsoever. It’s partial ownership in name only. If they buy a stock in the team, they get a little piece of paper. That’s all. Do you honestly think they have any say whatsoever in how the team is run?

  • MarleyHatchet

I am. An inconsistent headcase and locker room cancer on the downslope of his career? What about that sounds good?

when has GB signed a big-time FA anyhow??  charles woodson is only one i can think of, other than reggie white.. they have put things together via good drafting as well..  and the other cold market teams you speak of are also 3-5 times the size..  social life matters to these dudes.. just ask Brandon Marshall..

  • BIKI024

let’s at least wait until april 29th.. then we’ll have a better idea of who we have added to the team before we continue with the overdramatics..

  • floydrubino

If you couldn’t understand that I meant that his job performance would of gotten him fired then I guess I will make sure that I explain things that are so captain obvious. Thanks for explaining to me how someone who buys shares isn’t the president of the Packers.

  • floydrubino

Yeah that’s my point that teams in the cold have adapted to their environment. Almost all cold weather teams build through the draft. I never said Cleveland should be able to sign free agents I was showing that cold weather teams have accepted this years ago and knows they have to build through the draft. Pittsburgh, New England, Baltimore, and Green BAy have all done a good job in the draft. If Cleveland thinks they are going to get skill set players to come here in free agency then they are clueless to their identity. Holmgren and Heckert saying they want to build through the draft is an obvious statement that should have been done 10 years ago. We should have been trading down for more 2nd and 3rd round draft picks for years now.

  • floydrubino

This comment posted here again for some reason to a response but if you couldn’t understand that I meant if Randy Lerner was working for the Packers he would have a level of accountability and not be able to run it like he has run the browns without getting fired. Thanks for letting me know though that if you buy some stock on the Packers that you don’t run the team.
