Shurmur: Media Making Predictions While Team is Still Gathering Info
February 22, 2012Cavaliers Close Out 1st Half of Season Against the Hornets
February 22, 2012Doug Lesmerises, who covers the Ohio State Buckeyes for the Cleveland Plain Dealer was among the winners named Wednesday in the Associated Press’ Sports Editors annual contest.
Lesmerises was tasked with covering an Ohio State program that had its fair share of headlines before the football team even took the field. He remains very active on Twitter as well as his weekly “Hey, Doug” column which answers the questions of fans. The APSE accepted nominations which included columns that exemplified excellence on the beat as well as metrics that supported audience engagement. Merely having a Twitter account and publishing links would not qualify as being “engaged.” Items like message boards, chats and blogs (gasp!) all played a role.
Each newspaper was allowed to nominate two individuals. No word on who the other entrant was from the Plain Dealer.
Other winners in the division for those with more than 175,000 circulation were Greg Bedard, Boston Globe; Phil Miller, Minneapolis Star Tribune; Evan Grant, The Dallas Morning News; Troy E. Renck, The Denver Post; Gary Klein, Los Angeles Times; Joe Drape, The New York Times; Joe Strauss, St. Louis Post-Dispatch; Adam Kilgore, Washington Post, and Jeff Passan, Yahoo! Sports.
The Columbus Dispatch’s Tim May, Ken Gordon, Mike Wagner and Jill Riepenhoff were awarded for their efforts in breaking news among those with 75.000-175,000 in circulation.
Congratulations to all of the winners.

Congrats to Doug. I like his stuff a lot. And there’s a lot of it to like, as he’s one prolific cranker-outer.
No offense to the new writer as he’s pretty good, but I really miss Ken Gordon from the Dispatch…..at least in his capacity covering OSU.
Doug Lesmerises is very deserving of this as well. OSU fans have been spoiled with good coverage.
Congrats to Doug, that is a sweet accomplishment!
