Cavaliers Head to NY to Face Jeremy Lin and the Surging Knicks
February 29, 2012Box Score: Cavaliers 103 Knicks 120
February 29, 2012The Dancing with the Stars veteran and long-time Pittsburgh Steeler might not be smiling his typical smile today. The AP is reporting that the Pittsburgh Steelers will release Hines Ward.
The franchise’s all-time leader in just about every meaningful receiving category will be released sometime in the next two weeks said president Art Rooney II on the team’s website on Wednesday.
“We had a conversation today with Hines Ward and informed him that we plan to release him of his contract prior to the start of the 2012 NFL calendar year,” Rooney said. “Hines has been an integral part of our success since we drafted him in 1998, and we will forever be grateful for what he has helped us achieve.”
Browns fans won’t miss the smiling Steeler twice per season (assuming he doesn’t sign with some other AFC North team.) Ward’s career has been known in Cleveland almost as much for his head-hunting hits than it has been for his catches.
You will remember that a Hines Ward rule was implemented so that head shots from the blind side would be rewarded with 15 yard penalties.
Ward claims he will still try to play a 15th season despite being let go by the Steelers.

Fellow Cleveland fans, put your anti-Pittsburgh feelings aside and admit that Hines Ward had an excellent career. Always made the clutch catches, best WR blocker of his generation by a light year, and never afraid to mix it up and get dirty, which an overwhelming majority of modern WRs (most of whom are horrible divas) run away from. Granted, he could be a little dirty at times (which doesn’t really bother me all that much), but if he played for the Browns over the last 14 years, he would have been worshiped in NE Ohio.
Yeah. He doesn’t play for the Browns so I hate him. If Bernie Kosar played for the Steelers instead of the Browns I’d hate him too. Your argument is flawed.
Hines Ward was dirty ALL the time… check out any players poll.Good day sir.

The guy was a straight up cheap shot artist who took advantage of people when they weren’t looking and even part of the play. Pittsburgh fans should be real proud of their team of james harrison, heinz ward, and ben rothelisberger. These are guys you really want to look up to. People aren’t stupid they know that heinz ward is disrespectful to the game and when you play football you play like a warrior but you don’t intentionally try to hurt people. Yeah he was good but the league is better off having cheap shot guys out of the game. So good riddance heinz but he might sign with someone good for league minimum so we not be done with him yet.
Great player, great career. Fearless, clutch, and one of a few whose love of the game was palpable.
I’m proud. The guy is the size of a JV running back blocking people numerous weight classes obove him, he mentored dozens of younger players and always performed under pressure. That whole crew you mentioned does.
Who’s Bernie Kosar?
He’s that quarterback thats not a rapist (allegedly).
Please. Watch him block, and how he blocks. Its completely dirty. And not admitting it shows your flaws. Hines was a great receiver,m Yes. But a dirty player. This coming from a long time Georgia fan and having a sister in law know Hines from Georgia.
Don’t go on and say great things about him without overlooking the fact that his style of play is not only frowned upon, but gives him an advantage since nobody plays as dirty as he does.
Something like 8-4 agaist the steelers so I can see why you want to forget.
WHY?! >o
The fact that Hines Ward blocked like an offensive guard is the point.
Up until the league changed the rules in large part because of him, his blocking was lethal and legal.
DJ above is correct. If Ward were on the Browns, the fans (myself included) would love him – as in the way we adore Joe Turkey Jones…I love that belly-to-back suplex.
If the Browns are looking for a veteran to mentor their young receivers next year, they could do a lot worse than Hines Ward. It would almost be worth it to watch the Steeler fans cry during the Browns vs Steelers games next year.
Go Browns
That’s cold, Pittsburgh. But that’s the way it is.
FU browns and anyone else who wants to hate. Ward is a killer on the field so everyone talking BS can go F youreself
