NFL News: Browns GM Tom Heckert to miss NFL combine

According to a team spokesperson, Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert is not at the combine due to an illness. The combine runs through next Tuesday.

Heckert was also supposed to appear at the Browns pre-combine press conference yesterday, but was unable to attend due to said illness. He was also unable to attend the recently played Senior Bowl though there is no indication that it was for the same reason.

Without speculating too much, this would have to be more than the flu to keep Heckert away for the entire week. Per the spokesman, the illness is said to be non-life threatening. Browns head coach Pat Shurmur will meet with the media at 4pm today.

  • Yikes, the mere fact they had to explicitly state that it is not life-threatening implies it might be a pretty serious illness, whatever it is. Hope Tom has a speedy recovery and all is well.

  • mgbode

definitely hope he gets well quickly.

  • MrCleaveland

Man, the Senior Bowl was 3-1/2 weeks ago. Sure hope he gets well soon.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Man now even the front office personnel is going down during the offseason.  This team is cursed, they should have let the old man take it to Baltimore.  If they trade up and draft Griffin I’m calling for an immediate inquiry especially if Heckert is involved.  Being delirious should be grounds for reversal.

  • God help us we’re in the hands of the least talented of the big three in the Browns hierarchy.

  • JM

    Sure hope it’s nothing serious.

  • Harv 21

Since the combine and draft are his biggest days, probably more serious than the flu or an eensy weensy staph infection. But this is why they have scouts and staffs. Can’t do anything but hope he gets better soon.

better make sure he has NFL network in his hospital room

  • Stinkfist

    This isnt

  • Stinkfist

Ahhh, sorry bout that.  This isnt any different than losing a quarterback to injury.  Next one up. Get better Tom

  • cmm13

Seriously, a fellow human being’s health is in serious question and you use it as a vehicle to continue your Pat Shurmur rant.

    Unbelievable and grow up already.

  • porkchpxprss

Hope everything is well with Heckert, anytime you have to be told its “not life threatening” it has to be serious.  Really not that huge of a deal for the first pick or two or three, those guys are all going to be in for private workouts.  Those late round picks where this is the only one on one face time the team gets is where Heckert is really going to have to trust his staff.
If they do have another dreadful year I’m planning to use this as part of my excuse for giving McCoy and Shurmur one more year to prove themselves.

  • Ctowndawgpound

I heard earlier today that Bernie Kosar was at the combine scouting the quarterbacks and receivers.

  • Oh, get off the cross.  There is only room for one person and that place is taken.

    Also, thread hijacking.

  • Foghorn Leghorn

  • Bernie is in fact serving as a member of the Browns front office at the combine. He carpooled with Vic Carrucci, in case anyone was in need of a fun fact.

  • Hopwin

Sounds like a case of anal glaucoma.

  • MIKE

This is the worst possible time for this to happen, outside of the draft days.Heckert has done a resectable job these past 2 drafts.I hope this doesnt make for bad picks in rounds 4-7.

  • Wow, internet group think Borg-culture rears its ugly, selectively critical head.  I don’t see too many people here up in arms over the comment above about Heckert’s condition.

  • cmm13

Feeling so inadequate that you had to get 2 last words in?

  • Tom

aw shucks…even if he were there he would have missed most of it anyway(usually does!!!)

  • mgbode

well, Holmgren and Haskell have some expertise in preparing for the draft.  hopefully, they come in and help fill-in where needed.

  • mgbode

    that car-ride should have had a live-stream

  • I thought personal attacks weren’t going to be tolerated any more?  I think the WFNY editors ought to be consistent in the enforcement of that and not just towards those they happen to disagree with.

  • When one crosses the line of good taste, one should expect people to react. Your comment was tasteless at best, and I’m quite sure you knew it when you made it. I don’t mind having someone around to start the occasional fire, but common decency doesn’t seem too much to ask. You can draw attention to yourself without being crass.

  • cmm13

You should take a look at your own comments then are realize your personal attacks on Pat Shurmer fall into this same category.
