Irving and Rondo: Which Point Guard Was the All-Star?
February 29, 2012NFL Draft: Why not have two premier offensive tackles?
February 29, 2012According to Tom Van Riper of Forbes.com, Cleveland is not the most miserable sports city in the country. That “honor” goes to Atlanta. In fact, Cleveland fans are actually the 8th most miserable according to the ‘report’.
“Total Seasons/Championships: 225/7 Last title: 1964 No, Cleveland. Miserable as you are, you’re not No. 1. Those seven titles before 1965 are part of the city’s history. They count.”
Funny, but nobody but Cleveland seems to remember those pre-Super Bowl NFL Championships. Regardless, the order of miserable cities according to Riper is-
1. Atlanta
2. Seattle
3. Phoenix
4. Buffalo
5. San Diego
6. Houston
7. Denver (!!!!)
8. Cleveland
9. Kansas City
10. Cincinnati
(Tip of the hat to Cleveland Frowns)

How bad is Cleveland? We can’t even top a phony “report” that was obviously made for us.
Yea I dont get Dever being there either… Semi-recent super bowls, semi-recent Stanly Cup.
I think Forbes is #8 in most miserable magazines!
Obviously, time and the passage thereof did not factor into this ranking.
I can see Buffalo and San Diego being equally as miserable as us, but no one is more miserable. And then we win the tie-breaker because our failures are so memorably gut wrenching.

That’ll show ’em.
That’ll show ’em.
How did they get 7 championships? The Browns have 8 and the Indians have 2. Even if you remove the Browns first 4 championships, which aren’t recognized by the NFL, then that adds up to 6.

I’ve been to Atlanta and its beautiful and warm (mostly) and very much not miserable. Some parts of the city are a little rough, but you’ll get that in any city.
Buffalo would be high on my list. It’s like the arctic circle up there and there isn’t much to do, except lament the age of Jim Kelly/Thurman Thomas.
Have you ever been to San Diego? If you are feeling miserable about sports just walk outside and you will feel better. ANYTIME of the year.
So, the football championships don’t count when you are talking to a stoolers fan but they do count now? Man, can’t catch a break.
Real rankings:
1. Cleveland
2. Buffalo
3. Seattle
4. San Diego
2-4 are debatable; 5+ are irrelevant.
Sorry, but Atlanta has made the playoffs in the NFL and NBA pretty regularly lately, went to a SB in the late 90’s, won a WS and went to 3 others (if memory serves me correctly)
The only reason Seattle should be on this list is because they lost a terrific, young talented NBA team. We could only be so lucky to make it to a SB and get screwed by the refs. They also made it to the ALCS after a crazy 2001 season (knocking the Tribe out).
Sorry but Phoenix made it to a SB, won a WS, has had a crazy offense in the NBA that is entertaining (or at least was) and probably doesn’t care about how their hockey team plays because it is the freaking desert.
Buffalo only has 2 sports teams so they shouldn’t be higher on any list that has cities with 3 or more major sports teams. Heck, the Bills would rather play in Toronto, so shouldn’t they be on the list?
San Diego… do they even care about sports there when you can just lay on the beach all day?
Houston has won back-to-back NBA titles (granted it was in the 90’s but if my math is correct, 2 titles is more than 0), they made a WS about 7 years ago, and the Texans are a very talented up and coming team.
Denver? Seriously? 2-time SB champs recently, Stanley Cup, Rockies making it to the WS and the Nuggets are better off without Carmelo than they were with him! The only thing depressing about them now is the Tebow hysteria.
Looks more like the 8, 9, and 10 placed cities on this list are more deserving of 1, 2, and 3. And, I obviously don’t need to go through how putrid the Browns and Indians have been and the whole LeBum debacle.
Um, if Cleveland had made the SB and got hosed by the refs like Seattle did, you don’t think that would be right on top of the misery montage? Seattle is one of the few cities I would entertain COULD possibly edge Cleveland.
Can’t dismiss cities that consistently made the playoffs but no title. Couldn’t other cities say the same about the Browns? “Oh, they had such good teams with Kosar, and with LeBron they were in the hunt for an NBA title every year.”
The Cleveland Rams won the NFL title in 1945, their last year here. I understand that championship game was really something.
My question is why the F do you need these types of lists every year, just so some magazine can dump on fans, cities, etc.?
The REAL title of this list…
“Top 10 Most Illiterate Cities”
Getting hosed in the SB would just add to our misery. Seattle has no great history. No team out there can maintain crazy things like Red Right 88, the Drive, the Fumble on top of getting hosed in a SB. I also think it needs to be taken into consideration the passion of the fans of these sports towns.
The problem with comparing my statement to the Kosar years is that we were actually in championship games and had horrible things happened to us to end it all. Sometimes, teams just aren’t good enough to get over the top, let alone have craziness end the chance at titles.
And how many of these other teams have had the best player in the league on their team and still choke? If you’re a perennial #4/5 seed and can’t get over the hump, you deal with it. It’s not misery. But when you have a 2-time MVP and your team collapses, it’s far more devastating.
In the end, I’d rather our teams just win something so we wouldn’t have to worry about our ridiculous placement on a list of misery.
That list is spot on.
Denver, Phoenix and Atlanta? Gimme a break.
And don’t forget Tebowmania! Who could be depressed with such a media circus?!
Hey, this is total sports misery in the history of the city.
In the 40s and 50s Cleveland was the Bees Knees for Sports (I think that might have been a real PD headline)
I lived in Phoenix for 5+ years and I would like to add that the city has to care about it’s sport teams to actually become miserable from them.
How is this simply a seasons/championships formula? What about departing teams, departing players, how about all-time greatest sports plays committed against?!
Hey remember that time Atlanta beat us in the World Series?
it also doesn’t weigh recent seasons but does spend time saying that ATL’s bad 2011 is why they are #1 now.
I think the only time I booed a player wearing an Indians uniform when they stepped up to bat was the first game I was at after we acquired David Justice.
