Cabot: Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill Could Be Cleveland’s Target
January 9, 2012ESPN’s Erin Andrews to Host 2012 Greater Cleveland Sports Awards
January 9, 2012The last time Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren went on Seattle radio airwaves, all hell broke loose. This time around, Holmgren opted to hold his State of the Union press conference before heading back to his old stomping grounds.
The product: not much different from what was said when he took to the podium in Berea.
There’s a certain way I believe you build the team in the National Football League. You build it through the draft and Tom Heckert has done a great job here in two drafts and we have a lot of picks coming up in this draft. We have a lot of young players playing a lot and as a result we play young at times. We build it in the draft, try not to make too many mistakes there and then selectively go into free agency. I think we all saw teams last season, the spectacular free agent offseasons don’t necessarily guarantee success so we have to use our money properly, make good decisions, but that’s how we’re building our football team. That along with finding the quarterback which is the key to the whole deal.
Holmgren referenced his plan, one which he’s sticking to even if certain fans are not one with patience and continued to disparage high-volume spending within the free agent market. He spoke of Colt McCoy and Peyton Hillis, Andy Dalton and Joe Flacco. And, despite his love, once again said that “finding the quarterback” is the key that starts the engine.

I think the whole patience thing is really key. I know oribasi won’t want to hear it but if we want to build a team that competes year in and year out, it takes small steps and patience.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day”…and neither were other great organizations (e.g. Apple, Microsoft, etc.). Starts from the top down with a philosophy and mission statement. Then everyone in must buy into the philosophy and continue to move it forward. I trust we are heading that way instead of ‘”blowing it up every two years” like most other teams continue to do. Those teams that continue to do that continue to suck.
We are going to get there and the organization will undoubtedly get better in all facets. I know I wouldn’t want to work for an organization that blew things up every time in went bad. Would you? I know how we operate…continue to add new talent, hold to our mission statement, and hope for a little luck along the way.
This was Mike Charming. Could shmooze his way into a top NFL job anytime, anywhere.
My takeaway line: what’s the most important thing you look for in finding a qb? Throwing the ball is first. There are other necessary things, but you have to be able to get the ball there.
Oh, and also that Seneca handled being the backup well this year. OK, Mike. He knd of defaults into talking about his QBs like the’re his children – “I love them all, even when they suck.”
I am already sick of the speculation and the draft talk. Maybe I should stop googling “2012 NFL Mock Drafts” and watching clips of Richardson, Blackmon and RG# on you tube every day.
I suggested 2 drafts ago to take Mr Tim Tebow. Everybody laughed at me. But all the young man does is win. From high school to college and now the pros. Just because he isn’t the “PERFECT” quarterback. Can you imagine how his folks must feel hearing their son badmouthed all the time on every channel. I know how I would feel, but then I’m not perfect either so I know how he feels.. But as usual here in Cleveland before we even start next season we can start saying “WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR”. I was so excited when we got Coach Holmgren to run the team, but nothing has changed. Please come back “Otto Graham”. I love my Browns since my first game in 1963 at the age of 7. But this is sooooo sad. DO NOT WASTE #1 on Andrew Luck….remember Ryan Leaf… can’t miss right…Please don’t do it
